TICK PARALYSIS

We have seen a vast increase in tick paralysis cases over the past two weeks.
Spring is fast approaching and although the nights are still cold, the days are getting warmer. Ticks can be found at anytime throughout the year, but adult ticks are found in greatest abundance in spring and early summer. Therefore this is the highest risk period for tick paralysis

Paralysis is a deadly condition caused by the Paralysis tick. A paralysis tick can be identified by its body which is grey in colour with its legs close to its head. A paralysis tick attaches itself to an animal, feeding on blood, injecting small amounts of saliva into the animal. The tick's saliva contains a toxin that disrupts the connection between the nerves and the muscles of the body, causing weakness and paralysis. Animals with tick paralysis require hospitalisation for supportive care and in severe cases, mechanical ventilation to manage respiratory failure.

Signs of tick paralysis:
▫️incoordination
▫️weakness
▫️collapse
▫️vomiting or retching
▫️change in sound of bark or meow
▫️difficulty breathing

If you find a tick on your pet, you should remove it by using a tick remover or tweezers to detach it from the skin. Remove the tick gently by its head, without squeezing the body. Monitor your pet for paralysis symptoms and call your vet for further advice. If your pet has already developed symptoms, go straight to your nearest vet hospital.

You can prevent your pet from getting a tick by ensuring they're up to date with a parasitic product and by regularly searching their body thoroughly for ticks.

If you suspect your pet has a tick, or if you would like information on tick prevention, you can call us on (02) 4733 3456.

Take a moment to look at your pet’s teeth. Do they have any of the following characteristics?
Familiarise yourself with what healthy teeth and gums should look like. With approximately two-thirds of dogs and cats age 3 and older suffering from varying levels of dental disease, prioritising your pet’s oral health is crucial early on.

We offer complimentary dental checks at our Nepean, Mountains, and St Clair clinics.

BLOOD DONOR HERO! 💙

Ted, who was hospitalized due to a snake bite, was saved by Harvey’s blood donation. His rapid decline due to anemia required a transfusion, and Harvey’s timely donation was instrumental in saving his life. His owners are forever grateful to Harvey, a true hero.

Pictured above is Ted enjoying the outdoors, thankful for his second chance at life.

Thank you Harvey 💙

Detection of a foreign body is sometimes unclear on radiographs and as such, we often don’t know what we are going to remove until we go into surgery.

With this x-ray, we were 100% certain what this dog ingested!🥄

Dogs are motivated by curiosity, hunger and insatiable need to chew, and some dogs manage to swallow bizarre and unusual things. Some objects can be fatal and can cause serious blockages so it is imperative you act quickly!

Luckily this patient’s owner knew how serious it was and brought her dog in to our emergency department right away. The spoon was successfully removed surgically and he has since recovered well at home!

Call us on (02) 4733 3456 if you suspect that your dog has ingested something they shouldn’t have. Objects can cause serious blockages in a short amount of time.

Abbie the 8-year-old Staffordshire X presented to our emergency after-hours service after her owners noticed she was off her food and on heat but bleeding more than usual.
Upon presentation she was pyretic (fever) and tachycardic (rapid heartbeat).
An ultrasound was performed by Dr Fred and this confirmed that she had Pyometra (infection of the uterus). As the condition must be treated quickly and aggressively, Abbie went into surgery that evening.

Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus that causes it to fill with bacteria and pus. Clinical symptoms of Pyometra include; vaginal discharge, poor appetite, lethargy, vomiting and sometimes increased thirst or urination.

Abbie’s surgery went well, and she recovered smoothly. She enjoyed cuddles with nurse Liz during her two day stay in hospital for supportive care. We couldn’t help but take a photo of her gorgeous face and we absolutely adored her big, bright eyes.

We have since seen her for a recheck and she has healed from surgery beautifully! 🧸

Druzhook, the 7 year old Airedale Terrier presented to our afterhours clinic on Sunday evening for ingesting a fish hook!🪝

After spending a day at the beach, his owners noticed he swallowed a piece of string with a fish hook at the end.

X-rays were performed to locate where the hook was in his stomach and Dr Anthony was able to perform an endoscopy to successfully remove the hook.

Druzhook recovered well and was able to go home later that evening to his loving owner ☺️
Druzhook means ‘little friend’ in Russian. How sweet!

Dear dog owners, the recent humid weather has caused an increase in dogs suffering from fly bitten ears.

Fly numbers can be limited by keeping your yard free of standing water, dog poo, compost etc.

Obviously this can be a challenge. I have found fly repellents help, but the best product I have used is called “Advantix”. It lasts a month seems to keep flies away for that length of time.

We don’t stock it anymore as there are better flea and tick products, but it should still be available at big pet stores and online.

While we all enjoy the long weekend, the festivities also pose hazards for your pet. You can minimize unwanted emergencies during the long weekend whether traveling or staying at home, by following this holiday checklist on how to keep your pet safe during the long weekend.

* Create a safe place for your pets during fireworks
* Use a pet crate or gate to limit access to hazardous areas while you are out of the house
* Avoid giving table scraps to your pets
* Make sure your guests are aware of pets in the home
* If travelling in a car with your pets, ensure they are secured in a pet crate or secured with an appropriate seatbelt
* Provide plenty of access to fresh drinking water
* Provide shade and cover from the sun

It’s important that you monitor your pet’s behavior closely during the long weekend. If you are unsure of any signs they may be showing, contact us on (02) 4733 3456.

Do you know that we offer free dental health checks?
During your consultation, our vets will give your pet a thorough examination of their mouth and discuss the importance of dental hygiene to protect your pet from gum disease and infections.
Just like humans, your pet’s teeth need to be examined at least once a year. Dental disease is extremely painful and can be easily prevented by practising basic dental care at home and including a dental health check in your pet’s annual health check with their vet. If your pet requires dental treatment, our vets will provide you with an estimate including a cost breakdown of the dental treatment and be there for you to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. Call us on (02) 4733 3456 to make an appointment for your pet’s free dental health check! 🦷
