Was so lovely to meet Humphrey who was one of a number of poodles rescued by North shore dog rescue recently . After the tragic passing of her beloved Baxter my client decided to give Humphrey a new forever home and I’m sure he’ll bring them many years of joy . He was a little uncertain at first , but as usual Flynn stepped in to comfort him and assure him all is ok , and it took no time at all for them to become friends and play till they dropped . What a lucky boy you are Humphrey , we couldn’t be happier for you 💙

Here's one of my ironclad rules. When a new drug/medication hits the market, I avoid it like the plague for at least 1-3 years.

Why?

So I can see if it is likely to cause harm, adverse reactions, etc. You must understand that all of the initial research for new medications is done with small numbers of animals, and often misses side effects that only pop up when larger numbers of animals are exposed to the treatment.

This new arthritis medication blocks Nerve Growth factor (NGF) which has a reasonable efficacy in reducing arthritic pain.

The big problem is that NGF is found in lots of tissues and organs throughout the body, AND it's super important for the healthy functioning of the immune system, the nervous system, gut, - and really, the whole body!

So it's not surprising to me that so many dogs are experiencing serious adverse reactions. With two doses, the chances of an adverse reaction are about 1 in 550. The more doses (and it's a monthly injection), the higher the chances of harm/injury become.

I think there is a place for this medication as a 'drug of last resort' to extend life when we have done everything else. No way would I give it to my dogs unless this were the case.

However - the company that makes it is aggressively marketing this as a 'wonder drug, totally safe, side effect free'. This is what they are telling vets.

Also, the product insert in some countries list more side effects/adverse reactions than in other countries. This means vets are not being told the possible risks, and they might then recommend this medication for your dogs on the basis of what they know, which is not the full picture.

I'm personally amazed that this drug has been approved. The exact same thing for humans was not, because of the high risk of adverse reactions compared to other readily available arthritis treatments.

My advice? Avoid unless you're out of options!

Working in ER this past week: We had four heat injuries each day for two days straight. Four of these were French Bulldogs, which happens to be the most common US breed these days. The others were three Rottweilers (brachycephalic by exam) and one Pit X.

Only ONE survived. NOT a Frenchie. Not a brachycepahlix breed. The Pit X.

Why? He happened to be playing in a pond. He ran and played with kids on land and then in the shallow pond water in 95 F 85% humidity weather until he collapsed. The humidity at his breathing level was probably a lot more, since it was approx 12 inches above water level.

They recognized a problem and brought him in… from one hour away.

On arrival
he was HYPOTHERMIC. Low body temp. Typical of heat injury. We warmed him up, treated his other abnormalities and within a
few hours he waa normal. Like NORMAL. No kidney failure. No coagulopahty. NO PROBLEMS.

Why is this? Probably because this dog reached critical heat injury when he happened to be in the best environement for treatment… IMMEDIATE cooling in water that was colder than him.

RAPID cooling with the coldest source available is what saves dogs with heat injury.

It’s time ro let go of the old wive’s tales of how ice water causes vasoconstriction or that rapid cooling is bad. HEAT is what causes death in heat inrjury, not the coolong method.
