I watched this movie last night. It was about an alien baby that got kidnapped from its home planet. The baby was with its mum and siblings, playing all day, they slept in the same bed together and spent every moment together......then it was taken. The people who took the baby had great intentions. They were rescuing the baby and bringing it to a bright new world full of love and life, but this life was so different from the baby's home. The baby was placed in a beautiful room, but for the first time in its life, it was all alone. It didn't know where its family had gone. The new world was filled with no's and ah ah's and yes love, but it was very different from everything this baby knew, and the baby was afraid and lonely.

This is the time if you have not already caught on that I fess up. This isn't a movie. This is every puppy going to a new home. New puppy ownership can be filled with so much happiness and excitement, and it can be so very hard when that puppy does not meet the expectations that you dreampt of.

The above is a harsh comparison, but it is a true one. As a trainer, i get so many puppy owners come to me in tears saying it is so hard, and it is. Owning a new puppy is not easy, and the most important advice i can ever give is........

Take a breath, take a moment to yourself. Acknowledge it is hard, and that's ok. The second is to remind yourself of the story above. This world is so new and so different to this puppy, and yes, it's scary. It's ok for your baby to make mistakes. Yes, this baby has piranha teeth, which can make things slightly more difficult, but it's still a baby, so take a moment and breathe.

The ridiculous pressure that society puts on people to have a perfect puppy is similar to that of a baby. People ask why your baby isn't doing this yet, which makes you feel it's all your fault. Unwanted, unsolicited, and incorrect advice gets thrown at you from every direction, leaving you pressured, riddled with guilt, and confused, and it's not fair.

When it comes to puppies, the best advice i can give is to take a breath, take a moment, step back, and remember, this pup is just a baby, and you are all it has now. Take a breath, acknowledge it's not easy, and that's ok.

Then, if you are still in need of some help, give us a call!
