We’re inviting you to the BIRDSVILLE Christmas Photos 2024! Bring your Birds, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Rats & Reptiles to take Christmas photos with us here in store. All photos will be sent via email at the end of your session!

Unfortunately, we are not able to have cats & dogs for photos but there are lots of other organisations offering photo opportunities for them! 🐈🐕

Note: The photo area is a private room away from other store animals to ensure the safety of all pets.

Why did the ducks cross the road?
Could it be to prove they are not chickens?

Some a we some humans made sure this family of ducks got across a Brisbane road safely.

Also if you are ever in the mood to feed our native ducks we have healthy food for them which is probably cheaper than bread and won’t cause them health issues.

Finger biting and eye gouging appears to be missing

Erina - Bruce ward-smith stopped next to an oval to add to his eBird list and noticed a large group of Little Corella next the road foraging and in an adjacent garden were 6/7 Galah. A few Corellas flew over the fence and the fighting started. The Corellas seemed to be the aggressors with one Galah pinned to the ground and pecked furiously. This is breeding season and wild birds become hormonal and are likely protecting nesting areas or could be close to a nesting hollow. What are your thoughts for this behaviour?

To RESCUE or NOT to rescue?

The Dutch thunder wildlife rescue have had numerous calls for magpies presenting like this ….

Lying down on their stomach, wingspread, breathing heavily.

Do you think they need to be rescued?

They DON’T, they are just sunbathing 🏝️🕶️☀️

Obviously, if you see an animal that doesn’t quite look right and might be presenting just like this please call your local wildlife carer
☀️ are you still at the location with the animal?
☀️ if you approach it slowly or make noise does the animal move?
☀️ can you see any physical signs of injury such as exposed bone or blood?
They may even ask if you can contain the animal by placing a towel over it, popping it in a box or a basket and they may even ask if you can transport it to a nearby vet clinic, Wildlife shelter or to meet a Volunteer rescuer part of the way. All these things are extremely important to save time and give the animal the best chance of survival.

To people who are feeding the local kookaburras mince, please don’t. Or if you must feed them, please at least add Insectivore or some other suitable supplement to the mince. Wildcare did a check on some of the nest boxes at a golf course today and this poor baby had raw mince still in its beak. Please be aware, this is NOT a suitable diet for a kookaburra and you are risking its health by doing so 😢
