Willow the sock munching bulldog 🐶
After Willows family were concerned she was not eating and then starting vomiting, they brought her in for a consultation. Radiographs confirmed a foreign body. Dr Barbara Curtis surgically removed a sock that was stuck in Willows stomach.
Surgery was a success, and after a short stay in hospital Willow was able to go home with the strict instructions of no more sock eating!

If you ever suspect your pet has ingested a foreign body, it is critical to bring them in as soon as possible. Early intervention can drastically improve the outcome and in some cases, can prevent the need for emergency surgery all together.

Clinical signs of a foreign body:
Witnessed chewing on indigestible items.
Hypersalivation
Vomiting
Inappetence
Constipation
Abdominal pain
Restlessness/agitation

Build a nest box to help local wildlife thrive! 🏡

Did you know most of our native wildlife needs tree hollows for shelter? Natural hollows take over 100 years to develop and are very scarce due to wildfires and deforestation. But we can help by building nest boxes that provide the same function.

Follow the link for step-by-step instructions on how to build a nest box ⤵️

This poor bird is suffering from a deadly disease called beak and feather disease.
Beak and feather only effects parrot species of birds. It causes infected birds to lose their feathers and their beak becomes overgrown, making it impossible for the bird to eat. Very sadly, they eventually starve to death.

Beak and feather is a highly contagious disease that can impact whole flocks of birds. It is for this reason we do not encourage bird feeding stations and the feeding of wild birds as it becomes a communal spot for them to spread the disease through contact.
So if you have a bird feeder to bring our beautiful native parrot species to your yard, consider disposing of it and instead planting some native trees and bushes to entice them instead

If you see a native bird that you suspect has beak and feather, it's best to contain and take to the closest veterinary hospital

We're all feeling the temperature dropping, that means our pets are too.
Here are some simple steps to help make your pets more warm and comfortable this winter

▪️If you have pocket pets, bring them in of a night
▪️ Provide extra straw and hay for them to bury and stay warm
▪️ Allow your pets to sleep indoors at night, even if its a laundry or garage
▪️ Sleeping off a cold floor is best. Have an elevated bed available
▪️ Add extra blankets underneath and on top of their bed
▪️ Soft jackets for cats and dogs that are senior or have thin coats are great

Added tip: Head to your local op-shop to stock up on old blankets!
And stay away from heated blankets and mats, they can cause electrical burns

Stay safe and warm 🥶

KOALA CARE CENTER IN THE MACARTHUR REGION COMING SOON!

We love sharing such exciting news from our friends at WIRES 🐨

In a significant win for koalas and wildlife volunteers, the New South Wales Government has earmarked $4.5 million to establish a state-of-the-art koala care center in the Macarthur region. An additional $500,000 will support volunteer rehabilitators, amplifying efforts to aid injured and sick koalas in south-western Sydney.

The center, to be part of the Wildlife Health and Conservation Hospital at the University of Sydney’s School of Veterinary Science, will expand resources for rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation. This investment follows the heart warming journey of Macklin and Gage, two koalas rehabilitated by the hospital and WIRES volunteers

We have the pleasure of working closely with the great organization WIRES. Helping to treat and rehabilitate Australian native animals.
Senior nurse Jacqui is a WIRES volunteer and recently attended a rescue for this dragon. A member of the public found this guy on their property. He wasn't doing too well so they contacted WIRES.
Upon presentation, the lizard had no obvious injuries, was dehydrated and lethargic. We set him up in our reptile enclosure providing heat, water and food. We will continue to monitor and assess each day and hope he is healthy enough to release in the near future
