Apple and Blueberry Dog Treats - Recipe Apple and blueberry dog treats

Ingredients List
Dry Ingredients:
1 ¾ cups whole wheat flour (or substitute oat flour for a gluten-free option)
½ teaspoon baking powder

Wet Ingredients:
½ cup unsweetened applesauce
¼ cup pureed blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1 egg (to bind the dough)
1 tablespoon honey (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
Optional Add-Ins:
1 teaspoon cinnamon (a safe and tasty spice for dogs)
1 tablespoon homemade peanut butter (Learn how to make it here)

Tools You’ll Need
Large and medium mixing bowls
Rolling pin
Bone-shaped cookie cutter (or other festive shapes)
Baking sheet
Parchment paper

Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make Apple and Blueberry Bone Treats
These treats may look fancy, but they’re surprisingly simple to make. Follow these steps to create a batch of show-stopping dog treats your pup will adore.

Step 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and baking powder. If you’re adding cinnamon, include it now. Whisk the ingredients together to ensure everything is evenly distributed.

Step 2: Prepare the Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the applesauce, egg, and honey (if using). If you’re including peanut butter for extra flavor, stir it in now. The mixture should be smooth and well-blended.

Step 3: Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture, stirring as you go. The dough should start to come together. If it feels too sticky, sprinkle in a little extra flour; if it’s too dry, add a splash of water.

Step 4: Divide the Dough
Split the dough into two equal parts. Place one half in a separate bowl and knead in the pureed blueberries. This will turn the dough a vibrant purple. Leave the other half plain for the golden apple portion.

Step 5: Create the Marbled Effect
To achieve the beautiful marbled design, break each dough into smaller chunks and arrange them randomly on a floured surface. Gently knead the chunks together, being careful not to overmix (you want to preserve the distinct colors). Roll out the dough to about ¼-inch thickness.

Step 6: Cut Out Shapes
Using your bone-shaped cookie cutter, cut out treats from the dough. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving a little space between each treat.

Baking Instructions: Bringing the Treats to Life
Step 7: Bake the Treats
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Bake the treats for 20–25 minutes, or until they’re firm and slightly golden around the edges.

Step 8: Cool Completely
Let the treats cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Cooling ensures that the treats harden to the perfect texture.

How to Store Homemade Dog Treats
Once cooled, store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks. If you want to keep them fresh longer, refrigerate them for up to a month. For even longer storage, freeze the treats for up to three months.

To serve, simply thaw frozen treats at room temperature for 10–15 minutes.

Making These Treats Even More Festive
The holidays are all about creativity, so why not add some extra flair to your dog’s treats? Here are a few ideas to take your baking to the next level:

Decorating Tips
Yogurt Drizzle: Mix unsweetened yogurt with a touch of honey to create a dog-safe “frosting.” Drizzle it over the treats for a festive touch.
Shredded Coconut: Sprinkle unsweetened coconut flakes on top of the treats before baking to mimic snow.
Festive Shapes: Don’t stop at bones! Use cookie cutters shaped like stars, snowflakes, or Christmas trees for a holiday vibe.

🌡️ Hot Week Ahead: Keep Your Pets Safe from Heatstroke! 🐾

As temperatures soar this week, it’s essential to protect your fur babies from the heat. Pets can overheat quickly, and prevention is key. Here are some quick tips to keep them safe:

✅ Provide plenty of fresh water: Ensure your pets have access to clean, cool water at all times.

✅ Create shady spaces: Keep pets out of direct sunlight, and never leave them in a parked car—even for a minute.

✅ Limit outdoor activities: Walk dogs early in the morning or late evening when it’s cooler, and avoid hot pavement that can burn their paws.

✅ Keep indoor pets cool: Use fans, air conditioning, or damp towels to keep the environment comfortable.

🐕 Know the signs of heatstroke: Look out for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse.

🚨 Emergency Response: If you suspect heatstroke, cool your pet gradually with tepid water and contact your vet 🩷

1 cup of pumpkin puree (unsweetened): Be sure to use 100% pure pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling, which contains sugar and spices that can be harmful to dogs.
1 cup of mashed sweet potatoes: You can bake, boil, or microwave the sweet potatoes until they are soft enough to mash smoothly.
2 cups of whole wheat flour: For dogs with gluten sensitivities, you can use oat, almond, or coconut flour.
1 egg: This will act as a binding agent to help hold the chews together.
1-2 tablespoons of water (if needed): Add water only if the dough feels too dry or crumbly.
Step-by-Step Recipe Guide
Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients
The first step is to prep the star ingredients—pumpkin and sweet potato. I like to bake my sweet potatoes, as it brings out their natural sweetness and makes them extra tender. Simply wash and poke a few holes in the potato with a fork, then bake at 400°F (204°C) for about 45-60 minutes until soft. Once cooled, peel off the skin and mash until smooth.

If you’re using canned pumpkin, double-check that it’s pure pumpkin without added sugars or spices.

Step 2: Mix the Pumpkin and Sweet Potato
In a large mixing bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato and pumpkin puree. Stir until well combined. At this stage, you’ll see the rich orange color of the mix—a sign of all the good nutrients packed inside.

Step 3: Add the Egg
Crack the egg into the pumpkin and sweet potato mixture and mix thoroughly. The egg acts as a binding agent, ensuring that the treats hold their shape during baking.

Step 4: Gradually Add the Flour
Slowly add the flour to the mixture, about half a cup at a time. You want to achieve a dough consistency that is firm but not crumbly. If the mixture feels too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it becomes pliable. On the other hand, if it’s too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour.

Step 5: Roll and Cut
Lightly flour a flat surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Use your favorite cookie cutters to shape the treats. I love using bone-shaped cutters for an extra dash of whimsy. Charlie always seems to know he’s getting something special when his treats come in fun shapes!

Place the cutouts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving a bit of space between each one.

Step 6: Bake the Chews
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C). Bake the chews for 25-30 minutes or until they are firm and lightly golden. If you want a chewier treat, you can reduce the baking time slightly. For a crunchier texture that can help clean teeth, bake a little longer and allow the chews to cool in the oven with the heat turned off.

Step 7: Cool Completely
Transfer the chews to a wire rack and let them cool completely before serving. Trust me, your pup will be drooling by this point!

Once cooled, store the chews in an airtight container. They will keep fresh at room temperature for about two weeks. For extended shelf life, consider refrigerating them or even freezing batches for future use.

Customizing the Recipe for Your Dog’s Preferences

1. Add a Nutritional Boost
If you want to up the nutritional value of these chews, try incorporating some of these add-ins:

Ground flaxseed: Adds omega-3 fatty acids for a shiny coat.
Chia seeds: Provides fiber and protein.
Peanut butter: Dogs love the taste, and it adds protein and healthy fats. Be sure to use Homemade Peanut Butter for Dogs or choose a brand that is free of xylitol.
2. Experiment with Flours
Dogs with gluten sensitivities can benefit from using alternative flours like:

Oat flour: Adds a chewy texture.
Almond flour: A protein-rich option.
Coconut flour: Low in carbs and high in fiber.
