Thursday airway awareness 🐶
Did you know we offer BOAS surgery at AVC?

Now that it’s officially summer we’d like to promote awareness around respiratory health☀️

Brachycephalic dogs are more prone to heatstroke because their shortened airways make it harder for them to pant and cool down. This increases the risk of overheating especially in hot weather or during exercise
Signs to look out for, excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or collapse

We recommend limiting exercise in hot weather and to do walks in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler

Fun Fact 💫

Dalmatian puppies are born with pure white coats and develop their spots within 10 to 14 days of birth.

Most of their spots develop after three to four months, but they can continue to develop until they are around 18 months old.

No two Dalmatians have the same pattern.

The number, size, and pattern of spots are predetermined by genetics. Each spot is a cluster of pigmented hair.

Tips from us to you✨
It is important to understand that pets should not be allowed on balacony’s unsupervised
Dogs should only be allowed to roam on balcony’s that are completely enclosed and cats should not be allowed on balconys more than 1 level high un-supervised as they are at risk of falling and injuring themselves even dying.
We unfortunately have seen this far too often in clinic so please pet proof your balconies‼️

Fridays FUN Fact!

Dogs have two types of sweat glands: merocrine glands, which are similar to human sweat glands, and apocrine glands. Merocrine glands are located in dogs’ paw pads, and so when we think about how do dogs sweat, actually, dogs sweat through their paws 💦

Aside from panting, dogs also cool down through the sweat glands in their paws. Having them stand in a cool pool of water or giving them a quick foot soak can help lower their body temperature!

Tip for today - Tick Prevention 💫
It is important to make sure your pets are on flea and tick prevention all year round.

Some tick prevention products include
•Nexgard spectra
•Bravecto
•Advocate
There are many other brands available.

Tick season is between August and March however tick paralysis cases are often reported outside these times so pets living in tick areas should be on tick prevention year round, especially in the warmer climates.

We have 4 types of ticks in Australia with the Paralysis tick being the most dangerous.              Signs Of Tick Paralysis
Early signs:
• A change in voice; the bark or meow may sound different
•Loss of appetite (this does not happen in all cases)
• Vomiting
•weakness in back legs

Later signs:
• Wobbliness in the back legs.
• Excessive salivation and vomiting is not uncommon.
• Panting, progressing to loud breathing, even grunting noises
• Many dogs will exhibit a moist cough and breathing problems

If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms take them to a vet immediately.

Fun Fact Friday 💫
When cats are born, they, like humans, have the necessary enzyme (lactase) to break down lactose. As cats age, many lose that enzyme. This means after they ingest milk, cheese, or another dairy product, the lactose that isn’t digested stays in their intestines and begins to ferment.

The bottom line is that most cats are lactose intolerant and although they still seem drawn to dairy products, it is not worth the risk of an unhappy digestive system. It’s best to find healthier and more enjoyable options for a special treat.
