Charlie showing off his new party hat 🎉😂
Animals often lick at body parts that are painful or itchy, and so our desexed patients go home with a buster collar to ensure they don’t lick at their surgery site and cause an infection or other complications.
*the collars usually sit more comfortably on the head rather than pointing straight up like a floor lamp 😂🐶
*awwww* Boston terrier puppies after their vaccines and microchips 🥺 Big day at the vets 🐶
How baby birds present to the clinic (FEED ME) -> food coma -> half hearted feed 🐣
This currawong was found with it’s deceased siblings after heavy wind dislodged them from their nest. A member of public brought the baby to us, where he presented very flat. He was examined and given supportive care and soon perked up! He was released to the next available wires carer sooner after, and they head straight to where the parents are to try and reunite mum and bub.
This baby needed to come to the clinic because he looked so sick, but we do see a lot of baby birds that need to be left where they are. This is a friendly reminder that unless a baby is sick, injured or in danger - just pop it back on a low hanging branch and watch to see if mum and dad come for support feeds. Their best chance at a normal life is with mum and dad, and they’re often just learning to fly and how to be a bird! If you’re worried or have concerns about wildlife you’ve found you can either call wires or the clinic for further advice 🪶🐥
Mission for Vet Nurse Day: get some footage of our nurses doing things. Mission very difficult because they are always on the move! Vet nurses are not only there to support the vet, they’re radiographers, dentists, anaesthetists, councillors, pro wrestlers (I’m looking at you wriggly labradors), cat whispers, professional puppy cuddlers, wildlife warriors and many more things! This industry attracts a very compassionate, empathetic and caring person and we’re very lucky to have such awesome people in the workplace always doing their best to update practice and ensure our patients are as comfortable and happy as they can be. Happy belated Vet Nurse Day! ✨👩⚕️

Rabbits have four incisor teeth at the front of their mouth to help chop vegetation and molars at the back to help break down plant material, but did you know these teeth are constantly growing? They have to eat tough plant material to help keep their teeth a healthy size.
Some bunnies however, have malocclusion which is a condition where the top teeth don’t line up with the bottom teeth and so they can’t grind their teeth correctly to keep them a certain length. What does this mean? The molar teeth can curl and cause abscesses, the incisor teeth can grow and prevent them from eating normally. What do we do about it? We can trim the teeth to a more comfortable size and manage them this way for the rest of their lives, which is actually tolerated quite well by our bunny friends.
Fudgington here is doing a GREAT job of showing us the function of his bunny teeth 😹
Cuteness alert ‼️
Plovers will occasionally make their nest on the roof of a flat building. This is a hazard to their babies once they start walking because they will likely wander off the roof and are scooped up by concerned members of the public. These guys came to us very flat and not very responsive. After some fluids and time in our incubator, they were looking much brighter and vocal! They went to a wires carer the same day where they attempted to reunite the babies with their parents.
Meet Tiger 🐯
He needed several blood tests and to stay on intravenous fluids for a few days in hospital due to kidney disease. Tiger will need to go on a special renal diet, but while in clinic we give them something yummy so we can get their appetite going. Tiger had to wear an elizabethan collar because he tried to chew his intravenous catheter out, which can make it a bit of an effort to eat - as you can see 😹
Ouch 🤕
Lily is one of our many patients that have fallen victim to a nasty slab fracture on their carnassial tooth. How does this happen? Usually it’s from chewing on bones or other hard material, toys etc, but a lot of the time it’s a mystery.
Once the fractured segment was removed we could see the pulp of the tooth was exposed and performed an X-ray to assess the condition of the tooth roots before we extracted it.
Despite having a big molar removed, Lily recovered beautifully and was ready to inhale some food like the beautiful chocolate Labrador that she is 😹
Meet Luna 🐶
She likes to take US for walks (straight to the exit 😹)
Cuddle puddles with Stella 🐾
Stella stayed with us for her dental procedure recently and was another patient that benefitted from a little extra love and cuddles 🐶🐾
It’s amazing what a few minutes of pats and cuddles can do for a nervous patient.
This is our patient Sky 🐾 Sky’s owner used to work at the clinic and so she is very familiar with the staff here.
She needed a general anaesthetic to remove some lumps which we sent to the lab to test the nature of the growths. Some TLC and lots of kisses later Sky is doing well, stitches have been removed and she’s back to her normal, cuddly self 🐶🐾
Nellie came to the clinic for a day stay dental procedure and was feeling very nervous. She needed some extra company to feel more at ease, and boy did she thrive with the contact! Look at that precious face 🥺 A little extra love went a long way for Nellie, who has since recovered from her anaesthetic and is doing well 🐾🐶
The perks of being a vet nurse 🥰
This is Boots! Boots presented to the clinic with an obstruction blocking his urinary tract. This condition is called feline lower urinary tract disease, and it can quickly turn into an emergency. We anaesthetised Boots to place a urinary catheter, ran some blood work, gave him a cocktail of medications and supportive care for the next few days, and soon enough we could remove the catheter and he was urinating on his own!
Our feline friends can be very stressed creatures - usually due to environmental factors (new cat next door, construction etc). Females also get UTIs from stressful situations, but it’s the males that we worry about when we hear they’re running in and out of the litter and producing little to no urine, or yowling while toileting.
Boots, like many of our patients, has to have a special diet for the rest of his life which helps to reduce the chance of blockages happening in the future 🐱
I spy with my little eye…. Fun things under the microscope! 👀
This is an ear mite. They are microscopic mites that live within the ear canal, but can also live on the skins surface. They are highly contagious and spread through direct contact with an infested animal. They cause itchiness, redness and dark coloured ear wax. This video makes your skin crawl a bit, doesn’t it?
Not to worry! There are plenty of preventatives on the market which will kill/prevent these mites from hitching a ride in your dog or cats ears, and most are conveniently combined with tick and flea treatment too 😎
Bolognese (renamed to Cheeky) returned for his castrate procedure last week. Sound up for how he felt about being back and showered with love 🥰💕🐱
Interrupting your normal animal news with fruit under a microscope 🍇 I’ve used some dye that we use in clinic to stain samples from ears or skin so we can see different kinds of bacteria. The end results after doing this with a grape is too beautiful not to share.
Buddy presented for a general anaesthetic and dental last week. He had a problem molar that had some bone loss which needed to be removed.
Follow along to see what #adayinthelifeof Buddy looks like!
Greetings -> place catheter -> anaesthetise -> place ET tube -> provide fresh gas and oxygen -> perform dental -> recover -> post anaesthetic snack -> home time!
#adayinthelifeof Scampy!
Scampy needed a teeth clean and some teeth extracted due to bone loss. One general anaesthetic, dental x-rays and some dissolvable sutures later and Scampy’s mouth is feeling a lot better!
All was forgiven once cuddles were on offer 🥺🐶
Follow Scampy through his dental day 🐶
Pre-op vitals check -> premed and prewarm -> catheter placement -> dental procedure -> recovery -> cuddles -> snack offered but cuddles preferred 🐾
Many of our patients enjoy company while eating their meals, some so much that they will not eat out of a bowl and only eat hand fed - like Toffee here. The bowl of food was left untouched until one of our nurses sat with her and offered her the food with her hand. Both cats and dogs can show the same signs of wanting company while eating, they can feel more comfortable with someone around. It’s assumed this stems from natural instincts of having to be on guard while they eat, and having someone around helps them feel safe and comfortable enough to enjoy their meal 🐶🐱
