*LOOKING FOR A HOME*

This little kitten was a stray that presented to the clinic with cat flu. She was a snotty, grubby little mess but still a big smooch! She’s completed her antibiotic course and feeling much better, so now we’re on the lookout for a home for this week darling 🎉

Maple is about 3 months old and comes desexed, microchipped and has had her first vaccination. She’s a bit shy so will need lots of patience to start out, but given time she will make the perfect, purring little pal 🥰

Call us at the clinic on 47395028 if you’d like to organise a time to meet her 💕

We are on our last few bits of newspaper!

We use newspaper to line our cages and litter trays to help absorb extra moisture, add an extra layer with our mats and blankets to help keep the cold from seeping through, and we tear it up to create safe spaces for wildlife.
If you have old newspapers lying around we’d love to put them to use!

*LOOKING FOR A HOME*

This little kitten was a stray that presented to the clinic with a life threatening condition called pyometra - which means her uterus was infected and filled with bacteria and pus. Even though she would’ve been feeling atrocious and terrified, she still let her personality shine through and was friendly towards us!
With hope that she would find a home, we performed surgery to remove her infected reproductive organ, and continued treatment. She is now 100% healed 🎉

Pippi is now ready for her furever home! She’s about 9 months old and comes desexed, microchipped and fully vaccinated. She will need a quiet home as she does get frightened when out of her comfort zone, but with time and patience she’ll settle in and show her true affectionate, loving nature.

Call us at the clinic on 47395028 if you’d like to organise a time to meet her 💕

Erin is our super nurse. She’s super speedy, and a gentle and calm presence we all need.
Craig is our comedic relief, easing our stress and always around to support us through making us laugh and being a top listener.

These guys are the backbone of our little clinic. We hope you have an incredible birthday 🥳

The real reason we follow vet pages… for the baby animal photos 🥺
This is a baby ringtail that was found quite flat, no parents in sight 👀 a member of public brought her to the clinic where she had a health check, we rehydrated her by giving her subcutaneous fluids, and warmed her up. She was released to a WIRES carer on the same day 🎉

Our favourite thing to do is take belly rub shots of satisfied dogs 🐶

Bella presented with hind limb lameness which was consistent with a cruciate tear. We performed x-rays which confirmed our suspicions, and had the Veterinary Specialists of Sydney come out to perform a TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) surgery.
Bella had torn her cruciate ligament, which causes the joint to become unstable and the femur to slide on the back of the tibia. This is causes pain and inflammation, and is why most patients with this condition will not put any weight on this leg, or if they do they will only toe touch the ground. The surgery involves cutting and rotating the bones in the knee so the femur can no longer slide backward, this stabilises the knee and eliminates the need for the cruciate ligament entirely.

This photo was taken at Bella’s 8 week post op x-rays which were all good! Now we can slowly introduce exercise again 🎉

Congratulations to our last puppy preschool class for 2023. We wish them well for the future. They have been very good puppies so I think Santa will visit them. Leo, Daisy, Coop, Daisy and Yuna (not in photos)💕🎉🏆🎄

Charlie showing off his new party hat 🎉😂
Animals often lick at body parts that are painful or itchy, and so our desexed patients go home with a buster collar to ensure they don’t lick at their surgery site and cause an infection or other complications.

*the collars usually sit more comfortably on the head rather than pointing straight up like a floor lamp 😂🐶

Bun Bun presented to the clinic inappetent and lethargic. Rabbits must keep eating to move the material in their gut, or they get a potentially life threatening condition called gastrointestinal statis.
Moving quickly to find out the cause of why Bun Bun wasn’t eating, Dr Craig performed some x-rays to see what the abdomen was doing, and did a thorough examination. He found that Bun Bun had molar spurs. Molar spurs occur when the teeth don’t align properly, and as they are constantly growing that means they aren’t worn down correctly and begin to grow in the wrong direction. This is a painful condition that can cause a number of issues including inappetence, lethargy, and infections.
You can see in the second photo the first molar is heading towards the cheek. We anaesthetised Bun Bun, removed 3 problem molars, and the next day Bun Bun was eating, drinking and defecating like a trooper! 🐰

These are x-rays of patients that have eaten cooked bones. The first photo is a feline patient, you can see the white material running through the abdomen.
The next two photos are a canine patient before and after his general anaesthetic and e***a. There’s one small nugget in the final photo that we couldn’t remove during this first e***a, and he had to come back for a repeat e***a because this wouldn’t budge on its own.
Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious obstructions, and even if chewed to pulp it fuses with stool to turn into material that is as hard as concrete. There are so many risks involved with giving cooked bones to your pets - ensure the bin is secure these holidays!

One way to tell the age of a bird: do they still have fluffy eyebrows? Yes? It’s a juvenile 🐣🥹

This baby butcher bird found itself overwhelmed by a puppy - lucky that pup was more curious than anything else and didn’t harm the bird. It’s still unusual for a bird not to try and move away when being approached by canine friends or people so the member of public brought the bird for assessment. Baby bird had a check up, a feed, and was cleared for care. A WIRES carer attempted to reunite the baby with the parents, but unfortunately they were not interested in taking their baby back and it’s now being hand raised in care. Once strong enough, the butcher bird will be released back into the wild 🪶

How baby birds present to the clinic (FEED ME) -> food coma -> half hearted feed 🐣

This currawong was found with it’s deceased siblings after heavy wind dislodged them from their nest. A member of public brought the baby to us, where he presented very flat. He was examined and given supportive care and soon perked up! He was released to the next available wires carer sooner after, and they head straight to where the parents are to try and reunite mum and bub.

This baby needed to come to the clinic because he looked so sick, but we do see a lot of baby birds that need to be left where they are. This is a friendly reminder that unless a baby is sick, injured or in danger - just pop it back on a low hanging branch and watch to see if mum and dad come for support feeds. Their best chance at a normal life is with mum and dad, and they’re often just learning to fly and how to be a bird! If you’re worried or have concerns about wildlife you’ve found you can either call wires or the clinic for further advice 🪶🐥

On this episode of interesting x-rays… this is a classic example of severe dental disease in a feline patient. The gum and bone in the jaw is meant to sit snuggly just under the crown of the tooth, in these X-rays you can see where the tooth has started to break down and the gum and bone have receded.
Matilda had become inappetent at home due to very sore teeth. Once we performed dental x-rays we could see that Matilda had what we call reabsorptive lesions. This is a relatively common condition in cats where their own cells destroy the tooth from underneath the enamel (we still don’t know exactly why this happens). This is quite painful for the cat, and often results in the top of the tooth breaking off and leaving a painful retainer root in the jaw.
Matilda had all her molars and premolars removed due to this condition. She has since been back for her recheck and has been eating with gusto - including kibble, and has gained weight!

B1G1 Update 💕

Over the past few months, thanks to your support, we have been able to make a tremendous difference.
From June to August we provided 100 traumatised children in Nepal with dental care.
We couldn't have done it without your continued trust and loyalty!

From September to November, we are embarking on a new initiative. For every item of pet food that we well, we will provide 5 days of grains to nourish a child in Africa.

Together we can spread smiles beyond our clinic walls and create a ripple effect of kindness and compassion.

Ever wondered what a blue tongue lizard’s skull looks like? Well, they’re not meant to look quite like this…
This guy was brought to the clinic after being attacked by a dog. He had severe head wounds (pictured skull fracture) and minor injuries to his body. He had a big scar on his back and half a hand missing which was healed. His attitude certainly attested to his survival 😳
We treated him with some pain relief and antibiotics and off he went to a carer. After some weeks and medication in lizard rehabilitation, he was safely released! 🦎

Sound on 🔉

Rabbits have four incisor teeth at the front of their mouth to help chop vegetation and molars at the back to help break down plant material, but did you know these teeth are constantly growing? They have to eat tough plant material to help keep their teeth a healthy size.
Some bunnies however, have malocclusion which is a condition where the top teeth don’t line up with the bottom teeth and so they can’t grind their teeth correctly to keep them a certain length. What does this mean? The molar teeth can curl and cause abscesses, the incisor teeth can grow and prevent them from eating normally. What do we do about it? We can trim the teeth to a more comfortable size and manage them this way for the rest of their lives, which is actually tolerated quite well by our bunny friends.

Fudgington here is doing a GREAT job of showing us the function of his bunny teeth 😹

This looks like a sad little pug but this is actually a photo of our patient Margot having a snooze the day she had abdominal X-rays. How precious 🥺💤
Cuteness aside, Margot presented to the clinic after taking longer to urinate than normal. A feel of her bladder and an abdominal X-ray confirmed she had bladder stones - and lots of them! We performed a cystotomy and removed 4 large stones and 20+ small stones.
Margot has had her sutures removed and is a happy girl at home 🎉

We hope she has the BEST naps from now on 🐶
