Many of us will be busy this weekend putting up decorations for Christmas and the keen cooks may be making a start on their Xmas baking. These do pose some hazards for our pets so we want to make sure we are keeping things safe.

We are continuing to see patients of ours every week either come into the clinic or present to emergency with tick paralysis. Once the symptoms are advanced there is no guarantee that treatment will be successful. The vast majority of these cases either are not on a preventative or are overdue. Please ensure that you read carefully the reapplication instructions of your pets' tick prevention products so you can make sure you are putting on when needed. And if you aren't great at remembering to do it on time, every time - talk to us about some of the longer acting options, including the new yearly injection (dogs only, sorry).

Working in a vet practice, just when you think you've seen it all - something else bizarre walks through the door!

That certainly was the case today when this inquisitive little foster pup got way more than she bargained for when exploring and found herself with a leech attached to her eyeball! 👁️🤮

With the use of some local anaesthetic the leech was removed with only some minor damage to the cornea (the surface of the eye). The pup should make a full recovery in time to be adopted out.

Whether or not you like to enjoy the dress-up fun of Halloween, there can be some elements that are pretty scary for our pets. For those who don't love lots of little monsters (such as dressed up small children 😜) roaming the streets it can be best to secure them in a rear room of your house. If you have a reactive dog it may be better to avoid putting out candy altogether to limit activity around the front of your house. With the amount of traffic around, the safest place for cats is locked up inside. And although fake spider web gives a nice spooky aesthetic it's a death trap for insects (after all that's why spiders is it) but also for birds 😞.
