🐾🐢 Meet Rosie, a brave Cavoodle with an upset tummy! 🐢🐾
Rosie, our adorable Cavoodle friend, recently had a bit of a beach adventure that took a turn for the worse. After enjoying a holiday at the beach, Rosie started feeling unwell and was brought to us with symptoms of gastroenteritis.
Upon taking x-rays, we discovered sand impaction in her intestines – poor Rosie had swallowed quite a bit of sand while playing! πŸŒŠπŸ–οΈ

Thanks to our dedicated team, Rosie received the care she needed, including IV fluids, medication and around the clock care. We're thrilled to report that Rosie made a fantastic recovery and is now back home, wagging her tail and full of energy again! πŸ₯°πŸΎ

Remember, while beach days are fun, always keep an eye on your furry friends to make sure they don't ingest anything harmful. Stay safe and enjoy the beach with your pets!

🩸🐾 World Blood Donation Day: The Lifesaving Power of Blood Donation! 🐾🩸

Today we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our selfless blood donors and their dedicated owners. πŸ™β€οΈ Your generosity and compassion make a real difference in the lives of pets in need. Pictured is gorgeous Wali, one of our feline blood donors.

Could your pet be a hero? πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈπŸ¦Έβ€β™€οΈ

The Kings Birthday Long weekend is almost here!

If your pet is on regular medicationπŸ’ŠπŸ’‰ (like insulin, anti-inflammatories, thyroid or allergy meds), please check now to make sure you have enough to last until after the long weekend.

NEVS is always happy to help, but as an emergency hospital we are not fully stocked with all the medications that your regular vet might have (like long term allergy or behaviour medications). Also, if we have not seen your animal at NEVS in the last 6 months, by NSW law we need to have a consult before dispensing prescription medication.

This can be the source of extra stress and cost, so best to check now and if you need a medication top up, contact your regular vet today.

Molly's cat fight abscess 😸🦠🩹
Gorgeous Molly visited us at NEVS for an abscess on her leg. Her owners had heard a cat fight in the previous days and she was very sore and not walking normally on her right front leg. We regularly see abscesses in cats that spend time outdoors and get into fights with other cats.

When cats fight, they often scratch and bite. Bites can sometimes be very small and leave no obvious wound, as the skin seals over when punctured. During the cat bite, bacteria from the mouth and teeth get stuck under the skin. This causes an infection, pain and swelling and can progress to an abscess (a pocket of pus) that needs to be opened to clean out the bacteria and pus to allow healing.

Luckily Molly’s family brought her into NEVS in and we were able to check her over and locate an abscess on her elbow. After providing pain relief, we drained the abscess and flushed under sedation.
Molly was able to go home that night with antibiotics and pain relief, feeling much much better.

If you are worried your dog or cat may have an infected wound or abscess - NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies

🐾 Meet Otto the Lagotto! 🐾
Did you know Lagotto Romagnolos are a rare breed originally trained for truffle hunting? πŸΆπŸ„ Well, our friend Otto decided to hunt for a different kind of treatβ€”a hot cross bun!

Unfortunately, those sultanas are dangerous for dogs! Thankfully, NEVS vets and nurses sprang into action and took great care of him. After being made to vomit, blood testing and fluids, Otto went back with his regular vet - Allambie Vet Hospital, the following morning, for ongoing care.
This highlights the vital bond between NEVS and your regular GP Vet. NEVS works closely with our GP member vets to ensure, whether it’s an urgent situation or routine health, your pets are in safe hands 24/7.
We’re so glad you’re feeling better, Otto! 🐢❀️

When your regular vet is closed, NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies.

Cute baby Honey visited us at NEVS for a very swollen face!
Honey had received her puppy vaccines earlier in the day, at her regular vet.

Honey was having an allergic reaction! This is an overactive immune response to something the dog has been exposed to. Most reactions are fortunately limited to localised swelling, however, they may progress airway swelling and problems with the heart and with blood pressure. This is referred to as anaphylactic shock, severe form of a hypersensitivity reaction (see our previous post about Cricket the toy poodle, for more information). Fortunately, these complications are rare.

In Honey’s case, it is likely that she reacted to the vaccine she received earlier in the day.

Luckily Honey’s family brought her into NEVS in and we were able to assess her, check her vitals signs and blood pressure and treat her with medication. Honey was able to go home that night to continue recovering with her family.

If you are worried your dog or cat may be having an allergic reaction - NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies

Charlie's Parvovirus Battle πŸ¦ πŸ€ΊπŸ•πŸ’–

Last year, NEVS worked tirelessly to help Charlie recover from Parvovirus. Charlie was very sick, and despite many challenges, his family did whatever it took to get him well. During his two-week hospital stay at NEVS, this small Maltese Terrier cross puppy made a significant impact on everyone involved in his care.

Charlie originally presented to NEVS as a patient transfer from his vet, The Ark Veterinary Hospital. Due to his severity of illness and poor response to treatment he was transferred to NEVS for ongoing 24 hour critical care.

Testing revealed that Charlie had Parvovirus. This is a life threatening viral infection that can be fatal, even with treatment. Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated puppies are most at risk. Parvovirus attacked the lining of Charlie’s small intestine causing severe vomiting and diarrhoea. The virus also attacked his bone marrow, killing his white blood cells needed to fight off infection.

Charlie also had rare complications to the infection. He developed alopecia and all his hair fell out. He also developed IMHA, where the body’s immune system became confused and attacked his own red blood cells, leading to severe anaemia

Charlie required intensive treatment including feeding tubes, blood transfusions, many medications and even a faecal transplant to reintroduce healthy gut bacteria as his gut healed. We are thrilled have a recent update from his owners, showing him at thriving at home - look at all that hair!

NEVS works closely with our member vets, to provide state of the art, ICU care around the clock. It is important to recognise the collaborative care between NEVS and The Ark Vet . We all worked together to get Charlie home to his dedicated family. A big thanks to them for allowing us to share his story.

Be aware! Ticks are still active on the Northern Beaches.

At NEVS we have seen a number of tick paralysis cases in the last week. Paralysis ticks tend to be a seasonal problem - mostly occurring the in the spring time, but paralysis ticks are present all year and are often more active after a period of warm weather.

We recommend to keep your pets tick prevention up to date all year round and to use a newer class tick product such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica or Revolution plus.

Please make sure your pets are up to date with their tick prevention and remember to tick search your pets daily - it could save their life.

If you are worried your dog or cat may have a tick - NEVS offers a free tick check and removal service.

16/04/2024

πŸΎπŸš‘ Meet Cricket, the toy poodle with a passion for agility πŸ’– Cricket was recently at NEVS for a frightening episode of canine anaphylaxis.

Cricket had been well at home, before being found suddenly collapsed and unresponsive with a dangerously low heart rate and low blood pressure, after being outside. But thanks to quick action and the expertise of her owner, Cricket received urgent care at her local vet and then was transferred to NEVS for ongoing care and 24 hour monitoring.

Anaphylaxis in dogs is an acute and severe systemic allergic reaction initiated by the release of inflammatory mediators, such as histamine, triggered by exposure to an allergen. In Cricket’s case, a bee sting. When a dog comes into contact with an allergen to which it is hypersensitive, the immune system overreacts, leading to signs ranging from swelling and hives to low blood pressure and even abdominal bleeding.

Through careful monitoring and tailored care, Cricket made a full recovery! Further testing has shown Cricket has severe allergies to bee stings, but she has had a great response to desensitizing treatment to reduce the chance of future anaphylaxis 🌟 Now, she's back on her paws, ready to tackle the agility course 🐾πŸ’ͺ

Cricket's story serves as an important reminder of understanding canine anaphylaxis and knowing how to respond in emergency situations. 🚨As pet owners, it's crucial to be aware of the signs of anaphylaxis and to seek immediate veterinary attention if you suspect your furry friend may be experiencing an allergic reaction.

At NEVS we're committed to providing exceptional care for every pet that walks through our doors. 🏩❀️ If you ever find yourself in a similar situation or have any concerns about your pet's health, don't hesitate to reach out to our team.

Gorgeous Alfie is a fiend for eating things he shouldn't. Wash cloths, plastic spoons and fabric are some things he has eaten in the past (silly boy!) - some requiring abdominal surgery to remove.

We saw him at NEVS recently after he was being looked after by a family member and was accidentally left unsupervised with a shirt. Thankfully they noticed quickly and brought him into see us. We induced vomiting and Alfie, brought up the missing piece of shirt, potentially avoiding another surgery. Hooray!

As emergency vets, we often see dogs for eating silly things. Some dogs, like Alfie can be repeat offenders (the medical term for this is pica) and can be tricky to manage at home, often having repeat visits. Thankfully, if noticed quickly many things can successfully retrieved by induing vomiting while they are still in the stomach.

If you are worried your dog or cat may have eaten something they shouldn't - NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies

If your get accidentally ingests a potential poison, quick action can save their life!

Here's is some advice on what to do.

βœ… Identify the Poison: If possible, determine what your pet ingested. If possible bring in packaging of medication, poison or food item ingested.
βœ… Contact a Vet: Call us or your regular vet clinic immediately.
❌ Don't Induce Vomiting: Avoid inducing vomiting at home. It can worsen some poisonings and have it’s own serious side effects.
βœ… Gather Information: Know your pet's medical history and if they are taking any medications currently.
βœ… Follow Instructions: Follow vet advice carefully. They may recommend bringing your pet in for treatment or monitoring at home.
βœ… Prevent Future Incidents: Safely store toxic substances out of reach

Our homes may harbour hidden dangers for our furry friends. Here are some common poisons to be aware of:

πŸ€ Rat Bait: While these baits are effective for pest control, they can be deadly to pets if ingested. Keep them securely out of reach and be aware that rats can sometimes drag baits out of hiding places, where dogs can reach them.

🐌 Snail Bait: Many snail baits contain metaldehyde, which is highly toxic to pets. Ingestion can lead to severe neurological symptoms and even death. Even "Pet Safe" formulations that contain iron, can be toxic to dogs and cats. Be cautious when using these products in your garden and store them safely away from pets.

βœ… Permethrin Spray: This common insecticide, found in many flea and tick treatments for dogs and in tick repellent spray for fabric, is safe for canines but highly toxic to cats. Never use dog products containing permethrin on your feline friends, and keep them separated until the product has dried.

🦊 1080 Fox Baits in National Parks: While enjoying the great outdoors with your furry companions, be mindful of the dangers in National Parks. Baits containing 1080, used for fox control, are usually fatal if ingested by dogs. Every year we sadly see several dogs with 1080 poisoning. Please remember, it is illegal for dogs to be in National Parks. Keep your pets away from areas where these baits may be and enjoy some of the dedicated dog parks and dog beaches in the Northern Beaches and lower North Shore.

Remember, prevention is key! Always store potentially harmful substances securely and be vigilant when using chemicals or poisons around your home and in outdoor areas. NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies and for advice.

While herbal remedies are often seen as natural alternatives, some can be downright dangerous for our furry friends. 🌿 Here are a few herbal treatments to be wary of:

🌿 Tea Tree and Eucalyptus Oil: This essential oil, often used for its antiseptic properties, can be toxic to pets, especially cats and smaller dogs. Ingestion can lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, and even neurological issues. Keep it safely stored away from pets and don't use it on their skin or fur.

πŸ’Š 5HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan): While this supplement is used by some humans to manage mood and sleep disorders, it can be toxic to pets, causing seizures, tremors hyperthermia and even death.

🦷 Clove Oil: Used for toothache, indigestion and as an antiseptic, can be harmful to pets. Ingestion can lead to liver damage, neurological signs and oral irritation.

πŸƒMa*****na: With the legalization of ma*****na in many places, accidental ingestion by pets is becoming more common. Ma*****na can cause disorientation, hypothermia, urinary incontinence, collapse and even seizures in pets. Keep your stash securely stored away from curious noses and seek immediate veterinary care if ingestion occurs.

If you suspect your pet has ingested any of these substances, don't hesitate to contact us or your veterinarian immediately. NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies and for advice.

Watch out! Toxic plants are in our homes and gardens🌿 As much as we love decorating our homes with greenery, some plants can pose serious risks to our pets. 🐢🐱

Here are a few common ones to watch out for:
πŸ’ Lilies: These beautiful flowers might brighten up your space, but they're extremely toxic to cats! Just a nibble can lead to kidney failure. Keep them far away from curious paws.

🌴 Sago Palm: While this palm might look exotic, it's highly toxic to both cats and dogs. Ingestion can cause liver failure and even death.

🌼 Brunsfelsia: Also known as "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow," this plant contains toxins that can lead to gastrointestinal upset and neurological issues.

πŸͺ΄Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia): This popular houseplant can cause severe oral irritation, drooling, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting if ingested by pets. Be cautious and place it where your pets can't access it.

If you suspect your pet has ingested any of these plants, don't hesitate to contact us immediately - NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies and for advice.

Human medications can pose a risk to our pets as they are often easily accessible in bags and bedside tables or pills that have accidentally been dropped. Due to their small body size and differences of metabolism, a single tablet can be enough to cause death.

Common over the counter medications that are toxic to dogs and cats include
- Pain relief like ibuprofen, paracetamol and naproxen πŸ’Š
- cold and flu medication 🀧
- medicated sore throat lozenges. 🍬
- Mouthwash and gum containing xylitol πŸͺ₯🦷
- Some common antiseptic and wound care products can cause skin and oral ulcerations in our pets 🩹.

Prescription medication that we commonly see causing toxicity includes anti-depressants, ADHD medication, and heart medication.

Many medications used in veterinary medicine are adapted from human medicines, but you should never assume a medication is safe for your pet 🐾. Pets metabolize drugs differently and can develop vomiting, stomach ulcers, and even organ failure if they consume human medication.

Store medications in pet-proof cabinets or drawers and store bags and backpacks out of reach. Never administer any medications to your pet without your veterinarian’s instructions.

If you are worried your dog or cat may have gotten into human medication - NEVS is always available for veterinary emergencies and for advice.
