Sometimes our clients are bigger than us! 🐾❣️

Rocky the Rottweiler puppy, (yes puppy) came into Burwood and Bay Veterinary Hospital for a routine procedure but a very important one, his castration surgery. Due to Rocky being a larger breed of dog, it was recommended that his owners waited to castrate him so that he would be able gain all the growth hormones needed to help support his musculoskeletal system for his future.

Rocky also decided that he would attempt some work placement before his surgery with a little bit of receptionist duty with nurse Carolyn, where this great photo was snapped 📸

If you are thinking about desexing your dog, please call the clinic on 9745 2600 or book a consultation to talk to one of our veterinarians and find out their recommendations for your puppy’s breed. 🐶

📸 A Calm and Caring Approach: Blood Pressure Monitoring for Cats 🐾

Pictured here are our wonderful Vet Michael and Nurse Taylor demonstrating how we take blood pressure in cats using a Doppler machine. Maintaining a calm, quiet environment is key to ensuring your cat feels safe and relaxed during this procedure. 🐱💕

The Doppler machine works by detecting blood flow sounds using a special probe. A small cuff is placed around your cat's limb or tail, gently inflated, and the pressure is then measured as the blood flow resumes. It's quick, non-invasive, and provides valuable insights into your cat’s health.

Regular blood pressure checks are essential, especially for cats with conditions like:
🩺 Chronic kidney disease
🩺 Hypertension (high blood pressure)
🩺 Heart disease
🩺 Hyperthyroidism

Monitoring blood pressure helps us detect these issues early and manage them effectively, improving your cat's quality of life.

💬 Have questions about your cat’s health? Don’t hesitate to reach out to the team at Burwood & Bay Vets on (02)97452600. Your furry friend is always in the best hands with us. 💙

Meet Papoi, the grumpy “chiller” as we call him as he has a mind of his own and will decide when enough is enough, which we all respect!! 🤣🥰

Papoi had come into the clinic due to a decrease in eating, increased drinking and infrequent urination which was concerning his owner as he is an older cat. It was found after blood tests that he was in acute early staged azotemia, which is the medical term used for when the kidneys are unable yo filter waste products from the blood, resulting in high levels of nitrogen compounds in the blood. To treat this he was kept in hospital over night, given antibiotics and pain relief and then sent home the next day after making a quick recovery.

We will be seeing Papoi for his recheck this coming week, as well if you are in clinic check out his Pet Of The Month poster for more information on his treatment. ✨

🎀 Meet the tiny chi sisters Maggie May and Hazel 🎀

Hazel, developed a central corneal ulcer, a painful condition where an open sore formed in the center of her cornea. She started showing signs of discomfort, including squinting, excessive tearing, and rubbing her eye.

Concerned, her owner took her to the vet with her baby sister Maggie may as moral support, where it was determined that the ulcer was likely caused by an injury as she likes to get into places she shouldn’t like spiked bushes or cheeky arguments with Maggie Mae.

The vet prescribed antibiotic eye drops to prevent further infection and advised keeping Hazel from scratching or rubbing her eye. Hazel’s treatment plan also included follow-up visits to monitor healing. This was them on the recheck, where we can say that Hazel’s eye has made a full recovery and she is ready to take on the New Year!! ✨

Extreme Heat Warning for this week!!! ☀️🐾

Pet parents, please be aware that temperatures this week are supposed to be increased to over 30 degrees. The heat can be particularly dangerous to pets, as they are more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration than humans.

It’s essential to keep pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day, provide plenty of water, and ensure they have access to cool, shaded areas to avoid heat-related illnesses.

☀️ First, limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day—typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Instead, take walks early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler.

☀️ Always provide plenty of fresh water and ensure your pet has access to shaded, cool areas if they’re outside. If your pet needs to be outdoors for extended periods, consider setting up a fan or portable air conditioner to help keep the environment cooler.

☀️ Never leave pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes, as temperatures inside can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke.

☀️ For pets with short snouts, such as brachycephalic dogs (e.g., Bulldogs or Pugs), be especially cautious, as they are more prone to breathing difficulties in the heat.

☀️ Lastly, monitor for signs of heatstroke—such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting—and seek immediate veterinary care if you suspect your pet is overheating by calling the clinic on 9745 2600.

Cjay the 9 week old miniature dachshund cane into the clinic as his owners had just picked him up from the breeder and wanted him to be seen by his forever vet! 🧑‍⚕️🐶

Dr. Michael quickly diagnosed him with ear mites, tiny pests that had caused irritation and discomfort in his delicate ears. Cjay was a trooper, being well behaved and still as the vet gently examined him and prescribed a treatment of dermotic ear drops to help clear up the infection. 🐜

We will see him for a recheck at his second vaccination appointment! 🥰

Our darling frequent flyer Rusty turns 13 today!! Even though today is Friday the 13th, Rusty seems to use his bad luck as a good luck charm 🍀👻

Rusty was diagnosed with a melanoma on his lip earlier this year in which was removed, sent to the lab and then found that more of his lip would need to be removed to completely remove the cancerous cells. As you can see this never dampened Rusty’s smile, and is always happy to see everyone when he comes into Burwood and Bay.

Luna, the playful and curious cat, had always been full of energy until one day her eyes began to show signs of discomfort. After a visit to the vet, it was confirmed that Luna had conjunctivitis. 🐾💕

What is conjunctivitis in animals?

It refers to the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eyeball and the inside of the eyelids. It can affect various species, including cats, dogs, and rabbits. The condition can be caused by a variety of reasons, but Luna was treated with a course of eye drops and a revisit if irritation continues to occur!

Chicco, the playful little puppy, came in for his first visit to the vet with his new owner, a first-time dog mom who was understandably nervous. She had never owned a dog before, and though she had read up on everything from vaccinations to puppy care, she couldn’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed by the experience.

Chicco, full of energy and curiosity, tugged at his leash, eager to explore every corner of the clinic, oblivious to the sterile surroundings. His owner, on the other hand, was asking very important questions wanting to make sure she was doing everything right for her new companion. Chicco, ever the social pup, won over the staff with his sweet nature, while his mom slowly relaxed, realizing this was just one of many firsts they’d navigate together as a team. 🥰🐾

Ginger the bunny had an eventful week, as she was spayed on Wednesday. Though it was a big step for her, the procedure went smoothly, and she’s now recovering at home. Ginger has been a little more subdued than usual, but she’s getting plenty of love and care from her family. The vet assures that after some rest, she’ll be back to her curious and playful self in no time. 🐰

Ginger’s owners are glad to have taken this important step in ensuring her long-term health and well-being, and they’re looking forward to seeing her hop around with her usual energy soon.🥕

Juno, the energetic rottweiler puppy, had her routine check-up at the vet for her flea and worm treatment. As always, she was excited to be there, calming but eagerly she entered the clinic. The vet tech quickly administered her flea and worm tablet, which Juno accepted without protest—she was getting used to these regular visits. Afterward, she had some time to socialize with other puppies and dogs in the waiting area.

Juno was in her element, happily greeting the other dogs with a mix of curiosity and playful energy. By the end of the visit, she was feeling confident and content, looking forward to the next check-up and more opportunities to socialize with her furry friends. 🐾✨

Frank the harrier is a familiar face at the clinic, coming in regularly for his cytopoint injections to help manage his allergies. Always a calm and well-behaved patient, Frank trots in with his tail wagging, knowing that the visit means relief from the itchy discomfort he often experiences. 🥰

His owners are always attentive to his needs, and the cytopoint injections have made a significant difference in improving his quality of life. Frank’s visits are routine, but each time, he’s treated with the same care and compassion, ensuring that he stays comfortable and happy between appointments.

Oh no! Rosie had a chicken bone stuck after having an adventure in a bush at the park when her paw parents turned their heads. Chicken bones can be dangerous because they can splinter and cause blockages or tears in the digestive system, but luckily her owners noticed some changes in her behaviour. 🐾💜

She was brought into the clinic by her owners where the bone was found lodged in her top jaw, between her pre molars and molars. She was sedated and underwent a minor procedure to have the bine removed by Dr. Paul with a set of haemostats. Rosie automatically bounced back to her original self and has promised no more late night snacks 🍗
