Today's Dog Training Myth of the Day: "Only tell them once!"

What if you ask a dog (whatever age, breed, s*x, background, training level) to do something, but there is no response?

Set aside the myth of "only tell them once." Good rule of thumb: if it were a toddler, what would you do? Probably wait a few beats, be sure you had the kid's attention, then ask again.

Just like us, dogs may not be tuned in 100% because they are busy having their own experience of life which may or may not include you at any moment.

If you *do* have the pup's attention, and they did hear you, next step is to consider that they do not understand and/or don't see the point!

I've often asked clients to stand on a chair and sing happy birthday. I've done it while they were trying to take notes. Result: no compliance, and they say usually say, "Sorry - I was focused on taking notes. What did you say?"

If they are paying attention to me but look at me as if I'm crazy, I ask, "Did you understand what I asked? You did? So why aren't you doing it?" Inevitably the answer is, "I don't want to" or "Why would I do that?" It helped them understand how their dogs might be responding.

So give your dogs the courtesy of clear communication, engage attention first, be sure there is understanding, and make it worthwhile for the dog to work with you. Respect, courtesy and taking responsibility for what we are communicating and how we are communicating -- those are all supportive of healthy dog/human relationships.

This does not mean repeating, Sit-sit-sit-sit-sit-sit which is not good communication no matter who you're talking to! 😊

If you want and need response to just one request (and this has great value!), you first have to teach understanding, understand that connection and attention must come first always, then develop the skill, tighten the criteria and make it worthwhile. Then practice!!!

The other day I posted about sweet little Daisy 🐾

I asked for thoughts on her behaviour after a visit I had with her. I got some lovely feedback and some straight out advice. We’ve got a lot of unpractising behavioural dog trainers out there ☺️ Generally I was pleasantly encouraged with the knowledge of our community 🤩

I posted this to gauge an idea of what people’s thoughts are on the collective behaviours Daisy exhibited in the short hour and a half I spent with her. Many of my clients can misinterpret collective behaviours, and thats kinda normal when you’re living in it. Getting a birdseye view can be really handy.

What I experienced with Daisy was a heap of avoidance, and some shut down behaviours ☹️Definitely not typical of a 17 month old dog, even many rescues don’t exhibit this level of avoidance. This little love was hugely overwhelmed in the presence of 1 new and fairly benign visitor.

Most people pointed at her past - rightly so. We are often a product of our past. And yes, I had briefly looked at her breeders web page and noted the court orders that have been put against them by the RSPCA 😳 One can easily assume Daisy’s upbringing certainly wasn’t as fair, fluffy and supportive as they made out. But, as behavioural trainers we all know there’s a much more to this.

Could we have been dealing with a late onset fear period?
Was it simply the many triggers of events and stimulus of the flight and new home - that’s certainly on the agenda. Even so, many, many dogs go through relocations like this and still don’t offer this level of avoidance, 4 weeks after the transfer.
Maybe something really traumatic happened during this transfer? That’s a possibility.
My bet is on the lack of long term support and development during those early months, coupled with such a huge and mentally traumatic transfer.

Someone questioned the effort put into researching a good breeder prior to purchase. Here’s a point to consider; these breeders are highly skilled at spinning the most amazing dialogue of dog care and attention when they want to sell a pup or adult dog. Not only that, these wonderful owners had purchased an 8 week old puppy from the same breeders years ago and this dog lived a long, happy and fulfilled life with these owners. Proof itself right that these breeders must be good?
🎢 Never has it been more difficult to muddle through the maze and theme parked lights of the breeding and puppy world! 🎠

Right now, Daisy is in the safest place. She has a loving home and for what seems like the first time in her life her interests, comfort and self-development will be put first.

🎓 Throughout our session we worked out a gentle and safe way to set up a toilet space. We discussed the need to address her nutrition and how to feed her, to help with her toilet training and to her build her appetite, amongst other benefits. And we also worked shopped how to build her confidence and allow her to settle in over the coming months.

Thank you for your support and interest in Daisy. I hope to give you an update in the near future x

For now, small steps 💕 🐾

Do you think this is normal for a dog ….?
Have you ever owned a dog like this?

This is Daisy. Daisy is 17 months old.

How sweet is this little button 🥰

4 weeks ago Daisy didn’t have a name.

4 weeks ago Daisy was adopted into her wonderful family. She was purchased from a breeder in Tasmania.

Daisy likes to find the safest place to toilet, often that means relieving herself in the kitchen, in the shower or if her new guardians are lucky, in the very back corner of their yard.

Daisy doesn’t seem to want to play much.

When she goes out on walks, she sniffs, she stops a lot and looks around. She walks very fast when she knows she’s on her way back home.

She didn’t greet me at the door.

She wasn’t keen to take the yummy food out of my hand, she’d rather take it to her safe place after I placed it on the floor.

She wasn’t keen on engaging and was happiest lying on her bed.

Daisy is gentle, very shy and she doesn’t seem to complain.
