Our Small Animal Clinic at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Camden is closed from 4:00 pm today until Monday, 5 January 2026, at 8:00 am.

For emergencies (small animals and wildlife) during this time, please see the list of recommended emergency hospitals below. Our livestock and equine veterinary services will operate with an on-call veterinarian for semi-emergencies and emergenciesonly. Please see the graphic for more information and emergency numbers (save or screenshot this post just in case)!

It’s amazing how quickly Ace the German Shepherd has grown in just two months. It really doesn’t take long for these little fluffballs to turn into full-grown dogs!

The early weeks of a puppy’s life are so important for setting them up for a healthy, happy future. Proper care, socialisation, and guidance at this stage make all the difference as they grow.

Happy Vet Nurse Day! 🎉

Today, we celebrate the incredible veterinary nurses and technologists who make our University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Camden such a special place. This week, we shared some cake in their honour, with Keith Merchant, our Commercial and Clinical Services Director, sharing a few words about why we love our vet nurses:

💛 They handle the messy, essential tasks that keep our patients safe and comfortable.
💛 They are highly empathetic, guiding and supporting pet owners through tough decisions with compassion and care.
💛 They make sure everything runs smoothly for animals, owners, and the team.
💛 They work tirelessly (often work nights and weekends), making sure no patient gets left behind.

And last but not least, our nurses and techs teach each other to fly. They create space for growth, opportunity, and diverse careers - from imaging and diagnostic nurses, to wildlife nurses and carers, and reproductive nursing, pathology, and beyond - even nurses who become veterinarians.

To our nurses and technologists: we see you, we celebrate you, and we thank you for everything you do.

was such a superstar during her check-up last week (and Mum was very brave too)! We love seeing our regular clients and their pets; it’s always wonderful to watch them grow and stay healthy with ongoing care.

As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, Belle is more prone to health challenges like breathing difficulties, overheating, and dental issues. Regular vet visits help us monitor these risks and keep pets like Belle as comfortable and healthy as possible.

We loved being part of Wollondilly Shire Council’s Dilly Doggy Day Out at Bargo Sportsground.

Our University of Sydney, Uni Vets Camden veterinarians and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students provided free pet health checks on the day and loved meeting your adorable companions!

Our team also took to the stage to share practical pet care tips and insights with the community:

🐾 Dr Jenni Green, Director of Uni Vets Camden, spoke about parasite prevention – from worms and ticks to seasonal tips every pet owner should know.
🐾 Dr Tina Baxter, our skin, ears, and allergy veterinarian, explained how to deal with itchy dogs, and how often you really need to bathe your dog (spoiler: not as often as you think!).
🐾 Lauren, one of our fourth-year vet students, shared her experience with her placements in our University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, which allow vet students to get real-world exposure to a range of cases, while receiving guidance from senior veterinarians.

Days like this are special as they give our students hands-on experience in the community, while giving pet owners access to trusted veterinary knowledge.

A huge thank you to Wollondilly Shire Council for hosting such a fantastic event to celebrate our furry friends. We were proud to be part of it!

It’s International Dog Day! 🐾 Today we’re shining a light on one Very Important Pup who’s loved by staff and students at the University of Sydney School of Veterinary Science: Mulligan.

A long-time supporter of our School of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, Mulligan is well known for his generous spirit, and, of course, his very impressive collection of bibs!

His story is part of a bigger legacy. Mulligan’s dad’s connection with the School began with Ruggles, a much-loved Newfoundland cared for by our teams at Camden and Sydney. In gratitude for Ruggles’ care, his dad established the Ruggles Scholarship, which continues to support Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. Today, Mulligan and his dad carry that legacy forward.

Recently, Mulligan joined his dad at our School’s Prize Night in Camperdown, then just days later he answered another call: one of our patients at Uni Vets Camden urgently needed a blood donation. Mulligan stepped up and gave his blood to help another dog recover. What a superstar!

On this International Dog Day, we celebrate Mulligan, all the pups and owners who trust us with their companions. We also wish to thank our veterinary teams, clinicians and researchers, whose care and expertise make a real difference in the lives of animals we treat and drive research-led innovations in veterinary and human health.

Nearly 30% of surgical site disinfecting in veterinary hospitals misses the recommended contact time.

Our expert anaesthetists, Dr Eduardo Uquillas and Chris Burrows, led a study across five hospitals observing real-world use of chlorhexidine — a vital antiseptic for preventing infections.

The study revealed disinfectant is often left on too briefly or too long, increasing risk to pets. It highlights wide variation in practice and the urgent need for standardised protocols.

At the University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospitals, we’re proud to lead this important research that raises surgical safety standards. We’re now in the second phase of this study, where we’re testing different disinfection times to see how they affect the results. Our goal is to find the best amount of time to use chlorhexidine for effective disinfection.
