Cleaning your filters is a dirty job 🤮 but it is an essential part of fish keeping.

The filters job is to move and clean your aquarium water by trapping and breaking down the fish waste to keep your tank clean and clear. Over time the filter media gets clogged up with debris and needs to be cleaned.

✅ When rinsing out the filter media we grab a bucket or two of water from the aquarium. 🪣🪣 A quick rinse of the media is all that is needed. The filter media doesn’t need to be sparkling clean.

For filter sponges or filter pads we give them a squeeze until most of the rubbish is removed and water can flow through them easily again. For really dirty sponges a quick rinse in the second bucket of aquarium water may be needed.

For biological media like Seachem Matrix. We usually give them a stir in the bucket of water then pour out the dirty water. If it’s in a filter bag we lift the bag up and down in the bucket of water a couple of times. Then give it another quick rinse in the second bucket. Then it’s ready to go back into the filter.

For filter wool they get pretty filthy. We replace them every filter clean as it is usually the final stage of the filter system and the wool traps the finer particles before they go into your tank.

For chemical filter media like activated carbon or API Bio Chem-Zorb we rinse these out regularly and replace them every two months. For Seachem Purigen we would have a recharged one ready to swap over.

❌🚰 Avoid using tap water to wash your filter media as the chlorine can disrupt and kill the beneficial bacteria. Usually resulting in a cloudy tank a few days later when there is not enough good bacteria in the filter to break down the fish waste produced by the fish as they are still building back up again after being wiped out.

One last tip - clean your filters regularly. It’s so much easier and faster to clean a filter that’s cleaned regularly. In the last image we have a very neglected filter. 🤮 You’ll be spending ages bashing the sponges trying to unclog them and making a big mess getting all the sludge out of the sponges. In this case we would wash a half of the sponges and replace the other half.

Water change tip - Instead of lifting dirty buckets. Connect a longer hose to the gravel vacuum and run it out to the garden! The plants will love the extra water and nutrients. It is easier to vacuum a tank with finer gravel. This coarse gravel is hard to clean, and food and waste easily get caught in the gaps. #aquariumhobby #tips
