If you think you can’t train a cat, just ask our resident associate vet, Lily. She’s managed to train her two rescue cats, Valhalla and Narnia, to sit, stay, and even high five! Lily has dedicated her professional life to animals, starting as a kennel hand and Vetmed receptionist, then working as a vet nurse, and finally achieving her doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Sydney. As a lifelong animal studies learner, Lily is also 'Fear Free' accredited, meaning she can reduce or remove anxiety triggers that can cause pets to become fearful at home, in transport and at the vet clinic. We are so lucky to have Lily in our Vetmed team of expert professionals who really do care.

The impressive elephant is known to display some of the finest human traits - empathy, self-awareness, and social intelligence, yet it has been argued that the way we treat them is a display of some of the worst of human traits. With elephant numbers continuing to decline, it’s more important than ever to take action. On this World Elephant Day, let's focus on these magnificent creatures and inspire efforts to protect their dwindling populations, ensuring a future where elephants can thrive.

Optimal oral health is one of the most important aspects of your pet's overall health. Neglecting it can lead to more than just bad breath in your furry friend; it can cause infections, chronic pain, and potentially serious conditions like heart, liver, and kidney disease. We all know we are supposed to check our pearly whites twice a year, so why not our pets? Just like us, preventative dental checks will keep those cat and canine choppers in mint condition, and keep your pet healthier. Make preventative dental for your pet part of your routine, and give you and your pet even more reasons to smile.

During National Desexing Month, it's timely to discuss timing! We're frequently asked about the right time to consider desexing a new pet. While the general guideline is around 5-6 months of age, this decision is best made in collaboration with your trusted vet. Recommendations can vary based on the breed and size of the animal, so discussing it during your puppy or kitten check-ups will ensure the timing is perfect for your new companion. Read about the importance of desexing:

From 2nd July 2024, NSW rolled out important changes to pet ownership regulations. These updates are designed to streamline pet management and make it easier to reunite lost pets with their families. Whether you're a current or future pet owner, these new rules will impact how you register and manage your furry friends. Here’s what you need to know:

🐾 Early Registration: All puppies and kittens must be registered for life by 12 weeks of age, or when they change hands—whichever comes first.
🐾 Immediate Action: If you’re adopting or selling a pet before they’re 12 weeks old, registration needs to be done right away!
🐾 Avoid Fines: Registering late will come with an automatic fine, so be sure to register on time.
🐾 Easy Transfers: Transferring pets to new owners, even interstate or overseas, is now instant—no need for new owners to claim the pet separately.
🐾 Stay Informed: You’ll get SMS and email reminders about desexing and fee discounts for breeders.

For more details or to register your pet, visit the NSW Pet Registry. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. We’re here to help!

It would be reasonable to assume that the neck of a giraffe would be filled with many more bones than a human right? Well, guess what? Giraffes actually have the same number of bones in their neck that humans do, they are just way more spaced out…a little like the giraffe himself really!

Given how much we Aussies love our pets, it's hard to believe that we say goodbye to over 200 dogs and cats in shelters around the country each day. July is National Desexing Month, which aims to raise awareness of the companion animal overpopulation crisis and to save as many lives as possible.

As difficult as it may be to take your new little fur family member to surgery, it's heartening to know that by doing so, puppies and kittens just like them will be spared from ending up in shelters or living as strays. At Vetmed, we specialise in laparoscopic desexing, ensuring the procedure has minimal risk and the shortest recovery time, so your playful companion will be back to their frisky selves in no time.

However, your pets poor oral hygiene can lead to far more severe consequences longer term such as heart disease, liver disease, and kidney disease. Recognising the importance of dental care is the first step in ensuring the overall health, wellness and happiness of your furry friends from tooth to toe. Read more in our latest blog.

Could your workplace use a boost in productivity and communication? Bring Your Dog to Work Day could be just the solution you and your workplace need! Dogs in the workplace can create great conversation starters and encourage collaboration with people we might not ordinarily chat with on the daily. After all, who doesn't love an excuse to pat adorable pooches on the way to the water cooler? But there is also a serious side to today, and that is to raise awareness and funds for the increasing number of animals living in shelters, in need of their forever family. So taking your dog along to the office might just give someone cause to consider a visit to the RSPCA and bring home a new dog of their own.

Did you know that Vetmed is one of the few Sydney vet clinics to provide laparoscopic keyhole surgery? Our expert surgeons use laparoscopic surgery to perform safe, effective ‘keyhole speys’ in female animals, as well as male pets with undescended testicles, to prevent GDV (Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus), or for stomach twisting in larger dogs.

Laparoscopic surgery benefits include less pain, faster recovery times, increase accuracy, and far fewer complications - all the ingredients for surgical success in our book.

Although many dogs and cats have wonderfully thick fur to keep them warm, the cooler months can be a time to think about an additional winter coat for some pets, especially if you have a thin, older or short haired breed.

A good pet-coat or jumper will give coverage from the neck to the base of the tail while also giving protection to their belly. Make sure your pet’s coat is the right fit and isn’t restricting movement. Your pet should be comfortable in their coat while outdoors, but don’t leave your pet’s coat on once they are in a heated indoor environment as they may over-heat under all those layers!

Do you ever pour yourself a glass of wine and wonder why your dog is 'whining' alongside you? Whining can be their way of seeking attention, affection, or engagement. When your dog feels they are not receiving the desired level of attention or when they want something, they may resort to whining as a means of communication and encouraging companionship and interaction with you as their owner. So pour a little attention their way and you just might lessen the whine, so you can enjoy yours in peace!

A long weekend is loved by all, so if you are heading off with your whole family, furry members included, take heed of these top tips for travelling in cars with pets:
1. Ensure they are secured and strapped in.
2. Work up to long stints in the car with some practice runs.
3. Keep their heads inside the vehicle at all times.
4. Take a travel pack of snacks or entertainment items for long journeys.
5. And lastly, never leave them unattended inside a car.

It's official—winter is upon us. The days are getting shorter, and the chill in the air adds a little more challenge to getting out for a morning walk with your pooch. With the sun being a bit more elusive in winter, have you ever wondered how animals get their daily dose of vitamin D? Well, unlike humans, dogs cannot synthesise vitamin D from sunlight. They need to get their vitamin D from food, not from exposure to the sun, which makes a good diet paramount all year round for our four-legged family members. But don't let that put you off your daily walk. While we are taking in the sun's rays, our dogs will still enjoy the many benefits of daily exercise on their cardiovascular health. So keep up those winter walkies for everyone's health!

Hip Dysplasia affects all large dog breeds and causes debilitating arthritis if not prevented with early detection. A simple PennHip x-ray from as young as 16 weeks of age can detect hip dysplasia, and a simple procedure called Juvenile P***c Symphysodesis (JPS) can be performed to "tighten" the hip joints and reduce the chances of arthritis in later life. Dietary management would also be recommended by our Vets to ensure as happy and pain free a life for your dog as possible.

Just like people, dogs are prone to sunburn and to other complications and diseases associated with sun exposure. But sharing sunscreen with your pooch is a no-no. Sunscreen for humans usually contains Zinc Oxide which is toxic to dogs. Applying a sunscreen that is specially formulated for your dog can lower your dog’s risk of developing serious sun-related medical issues. As with any new skin product, it is also important to patch test on your pooch, and ensure no adverse reaction a few days prior to heading out for some rays. Your Vetmed team can advise on the best sun protection options for your pet, including where and how to apply it safely.
