Dental hygiene is one of the most important aspects of your pets health, and if not managed well, it can lead to a lot more than just halitosis on four legs. Infection, chronic pain, as well as long-term consequences like heart, liver and kidney disease can all result from prolonged poor oral health. We all know we are supposed to check our pearly whites twice a year, so why not our pets? Just like us humans, preventative dental checks will keep those cat and canine choppers in mint condition, and a pre Christmas check up is a great way to give you and your pet even more reasons to smile for the festive season.

Today, we remember those who served and sacrificed for our freedom. As we honour the heroes in uniform, let’s also pay tribute to the countless animals who stood by their side.

From horses and dogs to pigeons and donkeys, these loyal companions played crucial roles in times of war, providing support, comfort, and even saving lives. They remind us that courage and bravery comes in all shapes and sizes. Let us never forget, and always be grateful for the lives we live today as a result of their valiant efforts.

Trick or treat? Dogs are often very good at tricks, but when it comes to treats this Halloween, make sure those candies and chocolates are kept well away from sniffing noses on four legs. You might be aware of how bad chocolate can be for your pooch, but sweeteners in lollies and candies like xylitol can also be harmful to pets. Sorry Halloween Hounds - looks like it's more tricks and less treats for you for Halloween!

Our amazing vet nurses are the glue that holds our team together, healing, comforting, and protecting your pets every day. Today, we want to give a huge shoutout to our wonderful vet nurse team!

They’re there at every step of your pet’s Vetmed experience—whether it’s changing bandages, providing love and care during boarding, or assisting in surgeries to ensure everything goes smoothly. In short, they’re just as vital to your pet’s wellbeing and happiness during treatment as the vets themselves! We couldn't provide the depth of care we are proud of, without our nursing team, so thank you to all our vet nurses!

Itchy and scratchy in the house? Spring brings all sorts of reasons why your pet might have an insatiable itch that just can’t be soothed. Increased itchiness can be a key indicator of skin irritation, which we all know can be a real annoyance. Take a good look beneath their coat for signs of redness, swelling, or dryness. Skin in this condition is more prone to further irritation and infection, so if you notice these signs, swing by and see our expert vets to help restore the calm to your fur baby’s precious skin.

Just like people, dogs are prone to sunburn and to other complications and diseases associated with sun exposure. But sharing sunscreen with your pooch is a no-no. Sunscreen for humans usually contains Zinc Oxide which is toxic to dogs. Applying a sunscreen that is specially formulated for your dog can lower your dog’s risk of developing serious sun-related medical issues. As with any new skin product, it is also important to patch test on your pooch, and ensure no adverse reaction a few days prior to heading out for some rays. Your Vetmed team can advise on the best sun protection options for your pet, including where and how to apply it safely.

Ah Summertime! Warm sunshine, longer days, enjoying parks, gardens and beaches.... we aren't going to let our canine companions miss out on all of this now are we?

Outdoor play and exercise is great for our furry friends, but rolling around in all that nature has to offer also means we need to remember our grooming routines. Pet grooming is not all ribbons and bow ties and looking the pride of the park. Keeping a close eye on the condition of our dogs’ skin, ears, nails, and overall look helps us to keep an eye out for small problems before they become big ones.

Our VetMed team thrive on making your pets feel their best and our grooming service has all your pet pampering needs covered.

Did you know that penguins celebrate Christmas too? While we often associate these adorable birds with icy landscapes, some penguin species, like the Adélie penguins, are known to get into the holiday spirit by collecting and exchanging pebbles as a form of courtship. These pebble "gifts" play a crucial role in nest-building and strengthening the bond between penguin pairs. Talk about a unique and heart-warming way to celebrate the season in the animal kingdom!

09/12/2023

Sparkly things dangling from branches are just asking to be batted by a little paw aren't they? Can cats co-exist with Christmas trees without mess and mayhem? Well, this depends a bit on your cat and your tree. Introducing a new, tall climbable object into the house may be a temptation too great to resist if your cat likes a high vantage point, so it can be a good idea to ensure your tree is stabilised or tethered to protect the cat (and the tree) from an unwelcome tumble.

If you like a live Christmas tree, it will be hard to stop a thirsty kitty from helping themselves to the tree water, so make sure their own water bowl is always filled and clean. Try some foil on the floor around the base, wrap the base with decorative paper that sits high and could act like a barrier, or blocking access with the stash of gifts might be a deterrent.

If you have a curious cat, supervision will be best around the festive foliage for optimal tree and cat safety. When you do need to leave the two alone, closing off the room with the tree could be the best way to manage the temptress it is seen to be by your festive feline.

05/12/2023

The temptation to put new little paws under the family Christmas tree can be strong, but what are the key things 'Santa' needs to consider before sliding down the chimney with a new fur baby? To make sure your family is ready for such a special gift consider:

1. Cost - many people only look at the initial cost of buying a pet, which can be significant, but remember to consider the ongoing costs of food, vet visits, flea and worm treatments, toys etc to make sure you are financially ready.
2. Time - Dogs need regular walking and attention, and even some cat breeds can be on the needy side when it comes to your time. Make sure there is space in your daily, weekly and annual routines for a new addition.
3. Holidays - While our boarding options at VetMed are second to none, you might want to take your pet with you, so this will impact the type of holidays you might be taking from now on.
4. Chat to your vet - objective advice on your pet readiness, as well as breeds to suit your family can make sure you are ready and able to enjoy a new fur family member for life.

It's starting to heat up, and proper hydration is essential for your pet’s overall well-being and to help prevent heat-related illnesses. Keep your furry friends cool, happy and healthy this summer with these top tips:

1. Change water often with fresh clean water
2. Provide multiple sources of water especially for outdoor pets
3. Clean the water bowl regularly to ensure it is free of bacteria
4. Consider water based treats e.g. melon or bone broth ice cubes

Australians are mad about pets with one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world. Not surprisingly, most are dog or cat owners, but when it comes to the total number of pets per animal type, did you know that the quiet achiever in this category is the humble fish, with almost double the number of fish being kept as pets compared to dogs or cats!
