HOW TO KEEP YOUR DOG CALM DURING FIREWORKS 🎆

💥 Bring them inside to a quiet area
If you’re moving their bed to a quieter area in the house, do this about a week in advance, so their new spot feels familiar.

💥 Close windows & curtains
This will block out the noise and view of the fireworks, especially those closest to your dog’s bed.

💥 Walk your dog during the day
A tired dog is more likely to be less stressed than a dog who has energy to burn.

💥 Check fences & gates
Check beforehand to see if there are spots your dog can get through or under.

💥 Feed & toilet them
Your dog will pace more if they’re hungry, or have a full bladder but don’t feel safe going outside.

💥 Distract with toys & treats
A long-lasting chew toy like a Kong filled with peanut butter and treats will keep them occupied for hours.

💥 Stay home
If you know your dog fears fireworks, stay home with them to make sure they’re okay. If you aren’t home, arrange for someone to check in on your dog.

💥 Play calming music
Or turn your TV on to mute the outside noise. This will help your dog to feel more at ease.

💥 Be relaxed
Try to be as relaxed as you can; dogs feed off our energy and can sense if we’re stressed, which will put them even more on edge.

💥 Update microchip details
Make sure your dog’s microchip details are up to date. Lots of dogs escape during fireworks, and the quickest way to get your dog home in case this happens, is to keep your details updated.

💥 Talk to your vet
Talk to your vet about calming medication if you feel your dog’s anxiety is through the roof and nothing seems to be working, or chat to a dog trainer to see if they can give you some tips.

🗣️ “How can I tell if my dog is afraid?”

Dogs have certain ways of showing their distress. You can tell if your dog is afraid if they:
➖ are pacing and seem unsettled
➖ have their ears down or pinned back
➖ have their tail between their legs
➖ are whining or growling
➖ are visibly shaking
➖ are panting or have shallow breathing
➖ are drooling excessively

🎄🎅🎁 5 Christmas dangers every pet owner needs to be aware of this silly season 👇

🐾 Christmas decorations
If your dog has the spirit of an excited Christmas elf, it’s best to keep them away from Christmas decorations like bauble and tinsel, which can be a choking hazard and cause intestinal issues if swallowed.

Place Christmas decorations up high where their paws can’t reach and cat-proof your Christmas tree so your festive feline can’t hurt themselves.

🐾 Consuming human food
Some foods we enjoy (a bit too much of) during the festive season can be harmful to our furry friends, including:
➖ Nuts
➖ Chocolate
➖ Onions
➖ Garlic
➖ Sultanas
➖ Grapes
➖ Alcohol

🐾 Fireworks
The loud bangs caused by fireworks can easily scare our furry friends. Check your local council listings and Facebook community groups to find out if any local events will include fireworks.

If you hear fireworks nearby, bring your pets inside and make sure your gates and doors are securely locked. You can also consider a consultation with your vet to see if they can prescribe any calming medication that will help your anxious pets get through the night.

🐾 Heatstroke
If Summer does what she does best, Christmas in Australia can be HOT! While we can jump in the pool and sit in front of the aircon to cool down, our pets have a harder time getting rid of excessive heat.

On hot days, keep your dog in full shade, in an airconditioned room or in front of a fan. Make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water and keep an eye out for any symptoms of heatstroke. It can take as little as 10 minutes for a dog to severely overheat.

The early signs of heatstroke are:

➖ Excessive panting
➖ Noisy breathing
➖ Restlessness
➖ Pacing
➖ Drooling

BONUS TIP 👉 Before the silly season begins, check in with your vet’s trading hours. Some vets are open all day, every day, whilst others close for the Christmas break.

Also make sure you have the phone number of an emergency or after-hours vet clinic on speed dial in case your regular vet isn’t available.

If so, then we don’t blame you - dogs are the best things since sliced bread! 🍞

Although we know that getting a dog can quickly become the best decision you ever made, adding a four-legged friend to your household is not something to take lightly.

Some questions you should be asking before getting a puppy this festive season are:

🐶 Are you ready for a 10-to-15-year commitment?
🐶 What will your household look like in one, five- and ten-years’ time?
🐶 Will your finances be able to cover pet costs?
🐶 Do you have enough time to dedicate to your new dog?
🐶 Who will look after your dog when you’re on holidays?

Our Dog Safety Education Program is designed to teach children about dog handling, care, and health in a fun and interactive way.

By learning about these important topics, children will develop a deeper understanding and respect for their furry friends, whilst learning about the potential dangers associated with dog ownership and how to keep themselves and their pets safe.

Promoting education around dog safety is absolutely vital for our youngest generations, and empowering children through hands-on learning in this area is something we are extremely passionate about.

Our Program is highly engaging and all students get the chance to interact with our Dog of the Day and ask any questions they may have around dog safety and care, plus receive take-home items as a reminder of everything they’ve learnt.

Sun safety for dogs is super important, especially in the harsh Aussie sun and particularly if you’ve got a white or short-haired pet 🥵

Animals can be vulnerable to UV damage just like us ❌

As with humans, the UV risk to your pet varies based on skin type and sun exposure. For example, long-haired animals such as Huskies have far more hair shielding their skin than a short-haired Chihuahua 🐕

One thing all dogs, cats, horses, and other furry friends have in common, however, is that there’s no hair protecting their nose 👃

Other areas particularly susceptible to UV damage include ears and muzzles, but anywhere where skin is exposed to the sun can always benefit from some extra sun protection 🙌

There are a few ways you can help your dog slip, slop and slap, and here are our top 4 tips! 👇

☀️ Bring them inside the home or into an undercover area wherever possible, particularly during the warmest times of the day (12pm-4pm in summer)
☀️ Invest in a good quality, pet-friendly sunscreen
☀️ Whatever you do, DON’T SHAVE THEM! Consult a local Dog Groomer to find out the best way to treat your dog’s coat in changing seasons
☀️ Accessorise with UV-protective tops, jackets, hats and sunnies (though we can’t promise that your dog will be too happy about keeping them on!)

If you're a cat owner, one question circling your mind this holiday season may be how you can keep your cat out of the Christmas tree that they seem to love playing in so much 😅🎄

What hazards do you need to be mindful of when introducing a tree to your cat’s home environment and how can you keep them away?

For a stress-free Christmas without any tree-sasters (see what we did there 😉), try these tips to keep your cat safe around your Christmas tree:

🐱 Introduce Christmas decorations slowly
🐱 Pick up an artificial tree
🐱 Anchor your Christmas tree to the wall
🐱 Cover the tree’s water container
🐱 Opt for a small(er) tree
🐱 Hang breakable or special ornaments higher up in the tree
🐱 Don’t hang any lollies in the tree
🐱 Place the Christmas tree away from furniture
🐱 Restrict access to the tree
🐱 Distract your cat
🐱 Unplug Christmas lights when not in use
🐱 Don’t place presents under the Christmas tree until the last minute
🐱 Check the area around the Christmas tree frequently
🐱 If nothing else works: a deterrent spray might help
