National Mutt Day is all about embracing, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs.

Here's a sad stat for you: The biggest percentage of dogs abandoned and euthanised is due to the constant over-breeding and public desire for designer dogs and pure bred puppies that are sold to pet stores supplied by puppy mills that often produce ill and horribly neglected animals.

National Mutt Day was created to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds.

Most pure breeds that end up in shelters are generally rescued quickly by either the public wanting a “less expensive” pure bred dog or by a pure breed rescue.

The day’s mission is to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog.

Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier and better behaved. They also live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs - such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind.

There are millions of loving and healthy mixed breed dogs sitting in shelters, who are desperately searching for a new home.

So this National Mutt Day, consider visiting your local shelter and finding a new friend! 🐾

If you're not in a position to adopt right now, then making a donation is a great way to assist as well.

Not that we're deep into the chill of Winter, ensuring your furry friends stay warm is crucial!

While breeds like Huskies and German Shepherds handle cold weather well, most dogs struggle in extreme cold, especially in Southern regions like Victoria and Tasmania (and yes, even here in cold Camden! 🥶).

During Winter, it's vital to keep a close eye on our dogs, especially during sudden cold snaps that could harm their health.

Watch out for symptoms such as lethargy, runny nose, watery eyes, shivering, and loss of appetite, similar to humans.

When your dog shows signs of feeling cold, bring them indoors or provide a warm kennel.

Dogs with long, shaggy coats are better equipped to handle the cold as their hair acts as insulation, whilst shorter-haired dogs may struggle more in colder temperatures.

At temperatures around 12-15 degrees Celsius, most dogs are likely to be safe. However, at 10 degrees, it's essential to monitor them closely, as it could be unsafe depending on factors like age, health, and breed.

Temperatures of seven degrees or lower pose a potential danger, and at four degrees, it becomes potentially life-threatening.

Here’s how you can ensure your dog stays safe and warm this Winter 👇

❄️ Avoid leaving dogs outdoors for prolonged periods in cold conditions.

❄️ Ensure your dog doesn’t sleep outdoors. Provide insulated dog houses or a warm spot indoors. Beds should be away from drafty areas, and extra bedding should be provided for warmth.

❄️ Elevate outdoor dog houses to prevent heat loss through the ground. If a dog house isn't available, create a warm spot in your garage or home.

❄️ Keep your dog's bed away from doors or windows that could expose them to cold drafts.

❄️ Provide additional bedding for warmth, such as extra straw or blankets.

❄️ Keep food readily available, as digesting food helps dogs stay warm. Consider increasing their food intake during colder months.

At Pawz & Me, we understand the importance of pets in the lives of the elderly. Pets provide companionship, comfort, and joy, especially to those who may feel isolated or lonely 💔

That’s why we developed our Aged Care Facility Pet Visits service.

This service is designed to have a positive impact on the well-being of residents, by bringing the joy and comfort of pets to them, without any of the associated responsibilities of pet ownership.

Many residents we have met over the years show us photos of their dogs whom they loved dearly but had to say goodbye to and share with us how much these visits brighten their day 🌻

Are you interested in learning more about our Pet Visits? Email us at [email protected] to find out how we can bring this service to someone you know 💛

"Are dog's tongue's cleaner than people's?" 👅

Anybody else feel like they heard this 'fact' a LOT when they were kids? 🙋‍♀‍

It’s just one of those weird facts you hear around the schoolyard that you pass onto your cousin one day and they pass it around their school and suddenly it just becomes one of those things you believe but never really look into…

Until now! So here's a little bit of doggy-related trivia for you:

The general answer to whether a dog’s tongue is cleaner a human’s is…

Nope, not really!

A dog’s mouth is not technically clean, and is really not actually any cleaner than a human’s mouth.

Dogs’ mouths are home to an entirely different grouping of bacteria than to that found in a human, making it difficult to compare the level of mouth cleanliness between dog and human 🦠

Dogs tend to have a greater amount of bacteria in their mouths. After all, they do lick and eat some pretty rancid things! (Duck poo on the sidewalk, rubbish out of the bin, ‘special treats’ fresh out of the kitty litter tray… Just to name a few) 💩

But don’t let this deter you from receiving those love-filled sloppy kisses too much! 💋

The fact that your dog’s mouth bacteria is almost completely different from yours means their saliva is mostly harmless to you. In fact, a kiss from your dog is probably safer than a kiss from another human who shares similar bacteria with you! 😯

Okay, BRB. Gonna go get 1,000 kisses from our dogs now 😂

⏰ School Holidays start this weekend ⏰

If you haven't considered in-home Pet Sitting before, then we're here to convince you to do just that!

Some will tell you that boarding your pet is the best way to go because it’s cheap 🤑

They’ll say your pet will be fed, watered, and for dogs, be given potty breaks outside of the kennel run.

They’ll tell you that most pets do fine in a kennel and yours will, too.

But the truth is, Boarding Kennels are a scary place for most animals, particularly those that have suffered abuse or extended lengths of time in an animal shelter or cage 😥

This is why we recommend choosing an in-home Pet Sitter over a Kennel for your next getaway!

Does the thought of visiting the vet have your dog looking like this? 😬

Fear of visiting the vet is a common anxiety in dogs, even for the most happy and social of pups 🐶

While your dog might never learn to love their trips to the vet, there are plenty of simple steps you can take to make the whole process easier for them, and easier for you!

Follow our 7 tips to help make vet visits go smoothly for both you and your pup 👇

💥 7 Tips to Ease Your Dog's Fear of the Vet 💥

🐶 Socialise early: Introduce your pup to new places and people, including the vet's office, from a young age.

🐶 Stay calm: Dogs sense our emotions, so if you're relaxed, they'll be too. Find ways to ease your own stress about vet visits.

🐶 Make car rides fun: Take short trips with your dog to associate car rides with positive experiences.

🐶 Practice at home: Mimic vet procedures to familiarise your dog with exams and handling.

🐶 Desensitise: Regular visits to the vet's office help your dog get used to the environment.

🐶 Reward with treats: Give treats for calm behaviour during the visit, but ensure they're healthy.

🐶 Communicate with the vet: Be honest about your dog's behaviour to receive proper guidance.

By following these tips, vet visits can become less stressful for both you and your furry pal 🐾

Are you seeing signs of Separation Anxiety in your dog? 🤔

Dogs are more anxious than most owners would expect. Their receptiveness to humans means they can often mirror the emotions they express.

Separation Anxiety in dogs has been found to be the primary reason behind many frantic and destructive behaviours that pet parents often mistake for other behavioural problems 🙅‍♀‍

Treatment for separation anxiety is essential because it will make your dog calm and happy, which means you stop coming home to a house that’s half chewed-up! 😬

So what can we recommend? 💁‍♀‍

Here's a few easy tips that can help you to treat Separation Anxiety in your dog:

🐶 Downplay Goodbyes & Hellos.
By paying too much attention to your departure and return, you risk reinforcing the dog’s fear of your absence. When you arrive, quietly say hello and don’t get too affectionate until the dog has calmed down. When leaving, simply say goodbye and leave.

🐶 Give them background noise when you’re away - TV or YouTube is great!

🐶 Provide some old clothing with the owner’s scent for their bed/crate.

🐶 Don’t give them attention all the time.
We can’t be around every second of every day to entertain our dogs, so they need to learn to entertain themselves when we’re busy or away.

🐶 Start trialling them to entertain themselves and being on their own for small periods.
Some examples include:
👉 Ignoring them while you sit on the lounge until they calm down and/or walk away to amuse themselves, and rewarding them.
👉 Leaving the room for a short time, and rewarding them once they calm down.

🐶 Give them space!
Don’t let your dog sit next to you every time you sit on the lounge, or sleep in bed with you every night. They need to learn to be comfortable being without you. Create their own personal space so they don’t need to be with you all the time.
👉 Instead of sleeping with your dog, get them a separate dog bed where you can also pet them and provide calming treats. This will teach your dog to enjoy having their own space and be independent of you.

DID YOU KNOW? 🤔

Our most popular breed of doggy client is the... 🥁🥁🥁

CAVOODLE!

We have a whopping108 Cavoodle Clients 😮

Check out these interesting facts about the Cavoodle breed:

🐶 Sometime in the 1950s, breeders wanted to develop a hypoallergenic breed and experimented by breeding different dogs with a Poodle. The result between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle became the Cavoodle we know and love today!

🐶 A Cavoodle’s intelligence can be greatly attributed to their Poodle parents. Poodles are considered the second most intelligent dog breed in the world, so it only makes sense that Cavoodles would take after them. Because of their intelligence, Cavoodles can be trained very easily for a variety of tasks, and they are constantly on the hunt for new challenges.

🐶 The Cavoodle has become one of Australia's most popular breeds. They are a very popular dog in Australia due to their exceptional temperaments, robustness and low-shed.

25/04/2024

Our dogs are our beloved furry companions, but did you know that some of the most well-known breeds were trained to hunt soldiers in war?

Canines have served in mankind’s war since as early as 600 B.C when the Lydian King deployed dogs to help break the invading army of Cimmerians.

In the early days, canines were used to break up enemy formations, charging into the ranks and tearing down as many enemy soldiers as possible. Friendly forces would either attack the enemy just behind the dogs or would wait, letting the dogs spread chaos before the humans would attack with maximum force.

As warfare modernised, so did the service of dogs. They gained armour for avoiding injury in combat and breeders tailored new generations of dogs that were better suited for combat. Dogs were pressed into new roles, acting as messengers, patrols and scouts.

Many war dog stories depict the deep bonds between soldier and canine, yet the previous Australian Army policy barred these loyal companions from returning home after their overseas service.

In Vietnam, the fate of these dogs caused significant concern among soldiers, as their extended service terms prevented them from reuniting with their handlers back in Australia. The main reason for keeping the dogs ‘in country’ was the Army’s reluctance to cover the quarantine costs involved in returning the dogs to Australia.

In 1968, after much debate and parliamentary discussion, a new approach was adopted: retiring war dogs would be reserved by the battalion, then rehomed with European or Australian families’ residents in Saigon, sparing them from euthanasia.

Today, a positive shift sees tracker dogs returning home after their service, once again serving as valued companions to Australian forces on various missions abroad.

-

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.
