Just meet the most brilliant puppy owner
I asked if we could come say hello and they said
“ My puppy is super over stimulated. I need to train him can you come see us later ‘

Why is this brilliant
Because this owner knew
That if he let us come over just his pup would have
Practiced jumping up at me
Jumping up into Chester face
Hyper arousal spinning
All behaviours he would be saying No too later if he did not train what he wanted now

As we get closer and closer to the arrival of our favourite Santa Claus, take a second to remind yourself of the potential holiday hazards for your pets.

🍫 CHOCOLATE - this can cause a range of issues from vomiting and diarrhoea, to tachycardia (high heart rate), seizures and death in extreme cases. The smaller the dog, the darker the chocolate and the greater the quantity- the higher the risk of toxicity.

🍇GRAPES AND SULTANAS - often found in a chocolate coating, or in fruitcakes, any member of the grape family can cause acute kidney failure in dogs.

🥜MACADEMIA NUTS - also sometimes found in chocolate coating and can cause neurological symptoms

🥓CHRISTMAS HAM - or other fatty meats can cause gut upsets or pancreatitis. The bones can also cause intestinal obstructions or constipation

🌸 LILLIES - that might be found in your festive decor are highly toxic to cats and can cause acute kidney failure

If you’re concerned your pet has eaten anything they shouldn’t have please call us on (02) 9810 7544 for advice or your nearest emergency clinic if we are closed.

TRAINING TIP TUESDAY

Puppy Play Pens

Play pen areas when used correctly are a great way to help keep our young pups safe and help manage their behaviour

Benefits
- A safe and quiet place to get their much needed sleep and be
separated from the household as needed (especially at
Christmas)
- A place where supervised ‘chewing’ can occur – e.g. you
choose what gets chewed!
- An area to provide mental enrichment (Kongs, Lickimats, Treat
toys, slow feeders etc)
- Be separate from older dogs as needed to give them a break
- To help slowly transition them into the household, especially
when there is existing pets

What should a great puppy play set up look like?
- Adequate space for sleep, toileting and activities
- Pen walls should be high enough to ensure puppy does not
jump out and harm themselves, but low enough for you to
interact with.
- Often a crate opening out into a play pen works well
- Toileting area – young pups cannot hold on all night. They will
need to go, so lets provide a suitable area such as the fake
grass or litter tray set up within the pen
- Be placed in a quiet area where they can rest and feel safe
when the world gets a bit scary

Everyone loves the beach . Today it was people’s leftovers and cooked bones that sabotaged our fun
The concept of being off-lead means your dog has to be good to come away from distractions

But leaving food when you haven’t had breakfast is harder
Come on people put it in the bin and if the bin is full take it home x

Meet the latest graduates from our Balmain Vets Puppy classes . Super keen to get off to the right start . All smitten with their puppy and the choices they had made about when to get their pup and why and from whom

So thank you x

All the puppies grew in social etiquette . From Learning to self handicap to include pups of all sizes amongst friends
To being confident to have a go.
To dip into the play and come away when you need the break
But what was so great was the guardians being able to recognise these behaviours and so support their puppy “Making good decision “
You were truly a delightful group to train with
Thank you ###x
