If you’re planning on booking your feline friend into a cattery, 🏨 you will be required to ensure that their vaccinations are up to date. What does this involve?

Most catteries require adult cats to have received at least an F3 vaccination (against feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus and feline panleucopaenia) within the last 12 months. Ideally, this should have been administered at least 14 days prior to boarding to ensure maximum protective effect. 🐱

Vaccination requirements for young kittens can vary, so it’s a good idea to check with the cattery as to their individual policies.

For more information on feline vaccination, consult our knowledgeable team!

Have you heard of CIRDC in dogs?

CIRDC refers to Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex - a newer term for the contagious respiratory illness traditionally known as kennel cough. 😷

This new name alludes to the fact that the disease can be caused by a variety of different viruses and bacteria, and that dogs can contract this respiratory illness even when not attending a boarding facility.

For a personalised assessment on your pet’s risk of contracting CIRDC and how you can help to protect them, consult our cough-conscious veterinary team. 🐾

Should you book boarding or a pet sitter for your dog when you go away on holidays? 🌞

Staying consistent with a familiar, high-quality holiday care environment will help your pet to settle in more quickly and easily.

If your pet is a social butterfly, 🐕 they will likely enjoy attending a boarding facility where they get to play with other friendly dogs. However, if your pet is on the quieter side or has any significant behavioural or health issues, it may be worthwhile employing a pet sitter (or wheedling favours from a responsible family member or friend!) who can care for them in a calmer home environment. 🏡

For more advice on safe holiday care for pets, consult our caring team.

📋 Ensure your cat’s carrier is securely fixed in the car, but situated where it will receive good ventilation

It’s important to always keep an eye on children whenever they are around dogs. 👶🐕

Even the sweetest dog can be put in an uncomfortable position by an energetic toddler and do something they wouldn’t normally. Teach children to respect animals and treat them gently and never leave dogs and young children alone together. Socialising dogs early can also help increase tolerance of children. With a little care and understanding, children and dogs can grow to be best friends. 🐶💕

Training, like diet, can be controversial as everyone has their own take on what works best. However, we strongly believe that, based on the research, positive reinforcement training results in the best short- and long-term outcomes in dogs. 🐶🏅

Positive reinforcement training relies on rewarding good behaviour rather than punishing the bad. Punishment can be effective in the short term, but it results in fear and anxiety in pets.

Training pets should be fun! Start your positive reinforcement training today and see the difference in your dog’s behaviour! 🐾

One of the most common questions we get asked around desexing is whether it will change a pet’s personality. Fortunately, the answer is simple – no it won’t!

Desexing your pet prevents unwanted pregnancies and significantly reduces the risk of reproductive cancers such as ovarian, mammary and testicular cancer. While it can reduce the incidence of certain behaviours, such as wandering, fighting and hu***ng, it won’t change your pet’s underlying personality and they’ll still be the dog you love! 🐕💕

[FOX BAITING 14 OCT 2024 - 01 NOV 2024]

As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to get outside with your furry friends! But please be aware that foxbaits have been placed in local bushland areas. These baits are highly toxic to dogs, so be sure to keep them on a leash and avoid off-lead areas where baits may be present.

The North Sydney Council has advised that dogs and cats are prohibited from entering these reserves until Friday 29 November 2024.

Let’s make the most of this beautiful weather while keeping our pets safe! If you suspect your dog has ingested a bait, contact us at 02 8203 4390 immediately. 🐶💚

If your cat has been diagnosed with anxiety, one of the treatments that might be recommended is medication.

Just like how many people have to take anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication every day, sometimes our furry friends need help stabilising their mood and feelings. 🐱

There are lots of different medications that treat anxiety, and your vet will work with you to find the best one for your cat so they can live their best life – anxiety-free! 😌

Age is not a disease! Even older pets can have surgery safely.

Many pet owners worry about anesthesia in older pets. Advances in veterinary care mean that anesthesia is safe for most senior animals, and the benefits almost always outweigh the risks. We use human-grade anaesthetic agents and always check your senior pet’s underlying health through blood tests prior to any surgery. 🧑‍⚕️

If your pet needs surgery but you’re unsure about the anaesthesia, chat with our team to find out more information about how we manage senior surgeries.

Keeping pets away from snakes can be tricky. However, have you heard of snake avoidance training?

While not necessary for most pets, for those living on rural properties or who have previously attacked snakes, avoidance training might be worth considering. 🐍 Ensure you engage a qualified trainer who uses modern and pet-friendly training techniques if you go down this road.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, call us immediately. 📞

There are many plants in Australian gardens and bushland that can cause contact dermatitis or allergies in pets. Common ones include Zebrina (Wandering Trad), Moses-in-a-cradle, and certain grasses such as kikuyu and buffalo grass. These plants can cause itchy, red skin where they touch your dog.

If you suspect your dog has allergies, don’t hesitate to contact us. It’s important to find the cause so treatment can be tailored to your pet and we can alleviate their discomfort. 🌱🐾

Is your cat wheezing or coughing? These could be signs of feline asthma.

Asthma can make it difficult for your cat to breathe and can significantly impact their quality of life. If left untreated, asthma often gets worse and more difficult to control.

If you suspect your cat has asthma, bring them in for a check-up. We can diagnose the condition and recommend appropriate treatment options. 🐱💨

If you have a dog that’s previously had an ear infection, or maybe they’ve just got floppy or hairy ears, you might be wondering if you should be cleaning their ears regularly. The answer is: it depends. 🐶👂

In some dogs, regular ear cleaning can help prevent a build-up of debris and reduce the risk of infections. However, overcleaning, can actually damage the ear ca**l and increase the risk of infection.

Chat to our team for personalised ear care suggestions for your pet.

Welcome to Pet Medical at Milsons Point

Dr Cate Plummer and Dr Peta Gay Railton have been friends and colleagues for over 10 years. Cate, a Kirribilli local since 2014, noted the lack of veterinary services available in the area despite it being a pet friendly community.

Pet Medical seeks to address this by providing a locally owned and operated service in which veterinary excellence and exceptional service are key.

We love the warm and friendly feel of the community and look forward to becoming actively involved in it.
