If you’re planning on booking your feline friend into a cattery, 🏨 you will be required to ensure that their vaccinations are up to date. What does this involve?

Most catteries require adult cats to have received at least an F3 vaccination (against feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus and feline panleucopaenia) within the last 12 months. Ideally, this should have been administered at least 14 days prior to boarding to ensure maximum protective effect. 🐱

Vaccination requirements for young kittens can vary, so it’s a good idea to check with the cattery as to their individual policies.

Have you heard of CIRDC in dogs?

CIRDC refers to Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex - a newer term for the contagious respiratory illness traditionally known as kennel cough. 😷

This new name alludes to the fact that the disease can be caused by a variety of different viruses and bacteria, and that dogs can contract this respiratory illness even when not attending a boarding facility.

Staying consistent with a familiar, high-quality holiday care environment will help your pet to settle in more quickly and easily.

If your pet is a social butterfly, 🐕 they will likely enjoy attending a boarding facility where they get to play with other friendly dogs. It’s important to always keep an eye on children whenever they are around dogs. 👶🐕

Even the sweetest dog can be put in an uncomfortable position by an energetic toddler and do something they wouldn’t normally. Teach children to respect animals and treat them gently and never leave dogs and young children alone together. Socialising dogs early can also help increase tolerance of children. With a little care and understanding, children and dogs can grow to be best friends. 🐶💕

One of the most common questions we get asked around desexing is whether it will change a pet’s personality. Fortunately, the answer is simple – no it won’t!

Desexing your pet prevents unwanted pregnancies and significantly reduces the risk of reproductive cancers such as ovarian, mammary and testicular cancer. While it can reduce the incidence of certain behaviours, such as wandering, fighting and hu***ng, it won’t change your pet’s underlying personality and they’ll still be the dog you love! 🐕💕

As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to get outside with your furry friends! But please be aware that foxbaits have been placed in local bushland areas. These baits are highly toxic to dogs, so be sure to keep them on a leash and avoid off-lead areas where baits may be present.

The North Sydney Council has advised that dogs and cats are prohibited from entering these reserves until Friday 29 November 2024.

There are many plants in Australian gardens and bushland that can cause contact dermatitis or allergies in pets. Common ones include Zebrina (Wandering Trad), Moses-in-a-cradle, and certain grasses such as kikuyu and buffalo grass. These plants can cause itchy, red skin where they touch your dog.

😍Possum Magic at PMMP😍 Two rescued baby ringtail possums were recently brought into the clinic. Our nurse team were hands on deck helping these hungry babies nibble away at some bottlebrush. The two babies were removed from the pouch of their mum who sadly passed away. They have now been handed over to a WIRES carer who looks after a group of possums, all around a similar age/weight range and they will be raised together and released back into nature once they are big enough and independent enough to take on the world. Dr Cate Plummer and Dr Peta Gay Railton have been friends and colleagues for over 10 years. Cate, a Kirribilli local since 2014, noted the lack of veterinary services available in the area despite it being a pet friendly community.

Pet Medical seeks to address this by providing a locally owned and operated service in which veterinary excellence and exceptional service are key.
