Introducing your dog to a new puppy pal should be fun. However, we all know that not all pets get along, particularly if itโ€™s their first time meeting. ๐Ÿพ

To prevent any faux pas, make sure to always introduce new dogs slowly and on neutral ground (such as the local park). You know your dog best โ€“ if they are the life of the party, it probably wonโ€™t take long for friendships to be made. However, if they are a little introverted or standoffish, take extra time for intros.

Australians love the beach, and our dogs are generally no different. ๐ŸŒŠ However, itโ€™s important to always monitor your pets when they swim at the beach. ๐Ÿพ

Every year, dozens of pets suffer salt water ingestion or aspiration, either through drinking salt water or inhaling it accidentally. Call your vet if youโ€™re worried your pet might have ingested or inhaled salt water.

๐ŸŒž Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer! ๐Ÿพ

Summer is here, and the heat can be tough on our furry friends. Here are some simple tips to keep your pets safe and comfortable:

๐Ÿ• Hydration is Key
Make sure fresh, clean water is always available. Consider adding an extra water bowl to their favourite spots around the house.

๐ŸŒณ Provide Shade
If your pet loves the outdoors, ensure they have access to cool, shaded areas where they can escape the sun.

โ„๏ธ Cool Down Options
Cooling mats, a frozen water bottle wrapped in a towel, or even a shallow paddling pool can be great ways for pets to stay cool.

๐Ÿšถ Time Walks Wisely
Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws!

๐Ÿš— Never Leave Pets in Cars
Even for a few minutes, a parked car can quickly become dangerously hot.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Watch for Heat Stress
Signs like excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy could mean your pet is overheating. If youโ€™re concerned, contact us immediately for advice.

Letโ€™s keep this summer fun, safe, and cool for our beloved pets! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

๐ŸŽ† Fireworks & Festive Fun - Not So Fun for Some Pets! ๐Ÿพ

While fireworks light up the sky for us, for our pets, itโ€™s a different story. Loud bangs, bright flashes, and strange sounds can cause fear and anxiety, sometimes even leading pets to run away. But with a little planning (and maybe some extra support), you can help your furry family member feel calm and safe.

๐Ÿถ Top Tips to Help Your Pet Feel Safe
1. Create a Cosy Retreat โ€“ Set up a quiet space with their favourite blanket, toys, and familiar scents where they can feel safe.
2. Block Out the Noise & Light โ€“ Close windows, draw curtains, and play soothing music or turn on the TV to mask the sounds.
3. Burn Off Energy Early โ€“ A long walk or extra playtime during the day can help them feel more relaxed at night.
4. Stay Close & Reassure Them โ€“ Your calm presence can make them feel safe and secure.
5. Consider Anxiety Aids & Medications โ€“ For pets that need a little extra help, calming wraps, natural sprays, and vet-prescribed medications can make a big difference. Our team can guide you on whatโ€™s best for your pet.

๐Ÿพ Signs Your Pet May Be Feeling Stressed
- Trembling or shaking
- Hiding or attempting to escape (under beds, behind furniture, or sticking close to you)
- Excessive barking, whining, or meowing
- Pacing or restlessness (they just canโ€™t settle)
- Panting or drooling (even when itโ€™s not hot)
If youโ€™re seeing any of these signs, our team at Pet Medical Milsons Point can help. From anxiety aids to safe medications, we can offer advice tailored to your petโ€™s needs.

๐Ÿ“ž Call us on 8203 4390 or visit our website www.petmedicalmilsonspoint.com.au to book a consult and get your pets the support they need before the fireworks begin.

โ€™Tis the season for family catch-ups and feasting! ๐ŸŽ„ While the delicious festive foods are a highlight of this time of year, they can also present a risk to our pets. Every Christmas, we unfortunately see dogs develop pancreatitis after eating high-fat foods. ๐Ÿ— Avoid feeding your dog fatty scraps, meats, and greasy foods as these can trigger episodes of pancreatitis.

๐ŸŽ‰ Beat the Holiday Rush โ€“ Stock Up on Pet Meds & Treats! ๐ŸŽ‰

Donโ€™t let the festive season catch you (or your pet!) off guard. With holidays around the corner, nowโ€™s the time to get your petโ€™s medications, food, and essentials sorted so you can relax and enjoy the celebrations. ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿถ Avoid the Last-Minute Scramble!
๐ŸŽ… Medications Running Low? Weโ€™ll help you top them up so your pet stays happy and healthy.
๐ŸŽ Stock Up on Pet Food & Treats โ€“ Because no one likes an empty food bowl at Christmas!
๐Ÿšช Avoid Holiday Closures & Delivery Delays โ€“ Get in early to stay ahead of the festive frenzy.

โœจ What to Tick Off Your Petโ€™s Holiday Checklist
โœ”๏ธ Ongoing medications (anxiety, arthritis, heart meds)
โœ”๏ธ Flea, tick & worming preventatives
โœ”๏ธ Prescription diets & everyday pet food

Donโ€™t wait until Santaโ€™s sleigh is in the sky! ๐ŸŽ… Call us on (02) 8203 4390 to order your petโ€™s goodies and keep the holidays stress-free for the entire family!

Have you ever taken your dog for a walk only for them to have some vomiting or diarrhoea afterward? ๐Ÿคข Itโ€™s not uncommon for dogs to pick things up during a walk, particularly at high-traffic areas like dog parks. ๐Ÿ•

If you arenโ€™t sure what your dog ate or they seem unwell, get them checked by a vet. Donโ€™t ignore gastro symptoms after a walk. ๐Ÿ“ž

Follow our two tips to become a master of dog walking etiquette! ๐Ÿถ

Always have effective control over your dog. This means either using a leash or reliable recall. If your dog doesnโ€™t always come when called, they should be on a leash. We recommend solid leashes fixed to a harness or well-fitted collar. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

Always carry dog poo bags and pick up after your dog. ๐Ÿงด Ensure to dispose of this waste in an appropriate bin.

A snake bite is always an emergency. ๐Ÿ If your pet is bitten by a snake, make sure you apply first aid then call and visit your nearest vet for help, as snake bite patients require antivenom as soon as possible.

๐Ÿš‘ First aid includes limiting movement of the affected limb, keeping your dog as quiet and calm as possible, applying a pressure bandage if available, and heading to your nearest vet clinic.

As temperatures climb, the surfaces our dogs walk on can become searingly hot. ๐Ÿฅต

While many people know pavement and bitumen can get too hot for our dogโ€™s paws, itโ€™s important to remember sand can also burn delicate paw pads. ๐Ÿพ

If you visit the beach on a hot day, make sure your dog has plenty of access to shade and consider visiting early in the morning or late in the day to avoid the highest temperatures.

If youโ€™re planning on going camping with your dog this summer, make sure you prepare ahead of time to ensure a successful trip. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ Research the area you are travelling to and check where the nearest veterinarian is located, in case your pet becomes unwell. Bring all of their medication, food, and plenty of clean water for the duration of the trip. ๐Ÿ• Ensure their parasite control and vaccinations are up to date, particularly tick control and leptospirosis vaccination.

If your cat becomes anxious or temperamental in unfamiliar environments, ๐Ÿพ you may naturally feel a little concerned about taking them to a boarding facility.

Here are our teamโ€™s top tips for easing less easy-going cats into boarding:

Let the boarding facility know about your catโ€™s behavioural quirks, so they can give them a little extra TLC from the get-go ๐Ÿ’ผ
Consult our vets about safe options for decreasing your catโ€™s stress ๐Ÿฑ โ€“ depending on your pet, this may involve calming sprays, supplements, or prescribed medications
Ask the boarding facility about how you can help your cat settle in โ€“ this may involve supplying familiar bedding, treats or food ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Welcome to Pet Medical at Milsons Point

Dr Cate Plummer and Dr Peta Gay Railton have been friends and colleagues for over 10 years. Cate, a Kirribilli local since 2014, noted the lack of veterinary services available in the area despite it being a pet friendly community.

Pet Medical seeks to address this by providing a locally owned and operated service in which veterinary excellence and exceptional service are key.

We love the warm and friendly feel of the community and look forward to becoming actively involved in it.
