Aubreen Veterinary Hospital

Aubreen Veterinary Hospital We are a family owned small animal veterinary hospital on Sydney's Northern Beaches πŸ’•

Our clinic was founded in 1983 by Dr Gary Boston, who established its reputation as a caring, honest, and first-class veterinary clinic right from the beginning. Dr Margot Horder joined him in 1994 before becoming a partner owner with him in 2000. Employing many vets along the journey, including the lovable late Dr Hugh Southwood, our clinic entered a new era in 2015 when Dr Lewis Hunt & Dr Caroli

ne Wood, both of who were working at the clinic already & well established in the local life, took over ownership. Please visit us at http://www.collaroyplateauvet.com/our-people to find out more about our team!

πŸ”₯🌑️⚠️WARNING - TOMORROW WILL BE HOT! ⚠️🌑️πŸ”₯

Pets & wildlife need extra care during hot days, especially those with pre-existing health conditions.

IF YOU THINK YOUR PET HAS HEATSTROKE - please take them to the nearest vet immediately. Heatstroke is life threatening and pets can deteriorate rapidly.

β˜€οΈ Keep all pets inside if possible, especially smaller pets like rabbits and guinea pigs, who are particularly susceptible to heat. Set up a temporary home in a bathroom or laundry where the tiles will help keep them cool.

β˜€οΈ If you are unable to move pets inside ensure that their hutch/kennel/play area is in the shade.

β˜€οΈ Freeze water bottles for small pets to huddle against and lick, or freeze water bowls with treats or toys inside for bigger pets to play with.

β˜€οΈ Fill a wading pool or clam shell with water (in the shade) for your dogs to relax in.

β˜€οΈ Only walk dogs in the very early morning (or evening), if at all – if in doubt, a day of rest is the safest choice, especially for bracycephalic dogs or dogs with thick coats.

β˜€οΈ Provide plenty of fresh, cool water sources in large containers.

β˜€οΈ If your pet seems uncomfortable, try wetting their feet and misting water on their face. Many animals control their core temperature through their feet. Be careful though not to saturate birds, rabbits, or guinea pigs as they can go into shock.

β˜€οΈ Leave a few extra water bowls out throughout the day and night for wildlife.

β˜€οΈ Never leave an animal alone in a car for any amount of time on hot days. If you see an unattended animal in a locked vehicle, call the NRMA (13 11 11) or 000 immediately. You do not need to be a member of the NRMA to call for assistance. Do not attempt to break into the car yourself without contacting the NRMA or 000 first for advice.

β˜€οΈ Be prepared to evacuate, with food and medication for your pets, if bushfires develop nearby.

Stay safe everyone! We will be open tomorrow so please contact us with any concerns πŸ’—

Meet Goldie May! This beautiful girl came to see us for her annual vaccinations, her attentive owner had also noticed a small lump, which lead Dr Caroline to perform a fine needle aspirate that revealed a likely mast cell tumor. Mast cell tumours are unfortunately very common in dogs, though unusual in one as young as Goldie May (only 3 years old).

Following a successful surgery with Dr. Emma, where she was able to remove the tumor completely, we recommended a consult with SASH - Small Animal Specialist Hospital Oncology due to its grade. Goldie May then embarked on an intensive 8-week chemotherapy program through SASH, showing immense strength and courage throughout her journey.

We are overjoyed to announce that as of mid-November, Goldie May has been declared in clinical remission with no evidence of cancer spread! 🎊🐢 🩷

Atlas was in recently to see Dr Emma for his routine castrate. Nurse Ali spent lots of time with him while he was in hospital: Gentle cuddles and comforting strokes can provide reassurance and help reduce any anxiety during recovery. It's also a perk of the job for us! πŸ©·πŸΎπŸ˜‰πŸ©·

This cutie is Leo, who recently spent two weeks in our care for the management of his blocked bladder. Blocked bladders are fairly common in male cats, and they are usually unable to urinate due to the presence of tiny stones blocking the urethra - not so for Leo, who had no stones, but a persistant inability to urinate by himself, likely due to spasming of his urethral muscles or a weakness in the bladder wall itself. These cases can be very challenging to manage, and surgery often isn't the answer. Leo's owners were extremely dedicated to him and happy for us to treat him with a range of different therapies to give him the best chance possible, and he made a full recovery!

We treated Leo with both conventional & integrative medicine, using IV fluids, many modes of pain relief, supplements, a herbal tonic, and medicinal grade CBD oil. We manually expressed his bladder often (Dr Caroline popped in numerous times over the weekend for hugs and to check his bladder!) and ensured his stay was as relaxing as possible.

Leo's successful recovery was a great example of how both conventional and integrative medicines can be used together for the best outcome. We all loved having Leo stay with us but were even happier to see him reunited with his family and back home! πŸ’•

URGENTLY SEEKING CAT OWNER

A grey tortoiseshell cat was handed in to us this morning after being found in Lincoln Ave, Collaroy. It appears she has been hit by a car overnight and she is in a critical condition.

She is not microchipped. We are administering emergency care and pain relief, but given the severity of her injuries we need to find her owners as soon as possible.

We have photos available, so please send a message if you think this may be your cat, or give us a call on 9982 9439.

Meet Wicket - this beautiful boy was in this week because he has been suffering with a persistent ear infection, a common problem with our fluffy eared Labradoodles. Ear infections can be really hard to get on top of and some require a good ear flush under anaesthetic to help:

🐾 Remove accumulated wax, debris, and pus from the ear canal, which can be harbouring bacteria or yeast that contribute to the infection.

🐾 Reduce bacterial and fungal load: By cleaning the ear thoroughly, flushing can reduce the population of infectious organisms, aiding in the healing process.

🐾 Enhance medication efficacy: If our Vets prescribe topical medications (such as antibiotic or antifungal ear drops), flushing the ears beforehand can ensure the medications are more effective by allowing better contact with the affected tissue.

🐾 Relieve symptoms such as itching, discomfort, and inflammation, making poor Wicket more comfortable!

It's crucial to consult a Vet for proper diagnosis and to discuss whether ear flushing is appropriate for your dog’s specific condition. Contact us 99829439 or book online www.aubreenvet.com 🐾🩷

Popcorn was in this week for her Dental Procedure - as you can see from the photo she had substantial tartar build up and inflamed gums. Fortunately for Popcorn, our Vets could see from her dental X-rays that she did not require extractions, but a really good ultrasonic scale and polish made all the difference. 🐾

Regular dental cleanings and check-ups can prevent tartar buildup, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

Dental problems can cause pain and discomfort. Addressing these issues through dental procedures can alleviate pain, improving the pet's quality of life.

Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect other organs, including the heart, liver, and kidneys. Maintaining dental health can help prevent these systemic diseases.

Dental procedures can significantly improve bad breath, making your fur babies cuddles more pleasant!

Healthy teeth and gums make it easier for your pets to eat their food comfortably, which is essential for their nutrition.

During dental exams, our Vets can identify other health problems early, which can be critical for effective treatment. Maintaining good dental health can contribute to a longer and healthier life for pets.🩷🐾🐾

Happy Halloween! πŸ¦‡
Whilst we love seeing our pets in their spooky costumes (some not so willingly), we also often see a spike in the number of furbabies accidentally ingesting chocolate & lollies during trick or treating. If you are unsure whether your pet has ingested an unsafe amount of chocolate please check out our handy Chocolate Toxicity Calculator (https://www.aubreenvet.com/chocolate-toxicity-calculator). Remember, macadamia nuts and xylitol are also toxic to dogs, so watch out for any ghostly treats with these ingredients! πŸŽƒπŸ‘»

It was a snuggle fest when little Jak came in for his complimentary puppy health check and big sister Z**i joined in for the fun! Everyone wanted to come in to say hello while Dr Zoe discussed puppy care with their owners, including the critically important flea & tick cover, and what diets were best for both of them. Adults & puppies have different nutritional needs, and the establishment of a diverse microbiome is very important for puppies in warding off future infections (both in the gut and elsewhere in the body). We love discussing pet healthcare and are always happy to answer any questions you may have about new family additions πŸ’•
