🌞 Heatwave Alert! 🌞

This week, temperatures are set to soar in Sydney, and we want to make sure your furry friends stay safe and cool! 🐾

🌡️ Heatstroke is a serious risk for pets during extreme heat, but with a little preparation, you can help them stay comfortable. Here are some tips:

• Stay Indoors: During the hottest parts of the day (usually 11 AM to 4 PM), keep your pets inside where it’s cool. 🏠
• Hydration is Key: Ensure fresh water is always available and encourage your pets to drink regularly. 💧
• Cool Down: Use cooling mats, fans, or damp towels to help your pets stay cool. A shallow kiddie pool can also provide a refreshing spot to cool off! 🐾💦
• Avoid Hot Pavement: Asphalt can burn paws! Walk your pets during the cooler parts of the day (early morning or late evening). 🐕
• Trim Those Furs: Light trimming (but not shaving) can help keep your pet more comfortable in the heat. ✂️🐾
• Watch for Warning Signs of Heatstroke: Heatstroke can affect all pets, and it’s crucial to spot the signs early. Keep an eye out for:
- Dogs: Excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, bright red or pale gums.
- Cats: Rapid breathing, drooling, lethargy, restlessness, and hiding in cool places.
- Rabbits: Reduced appetite, rapid breathing, lethargy, and drooling.
- Birds: Panting, fluffed-up feathers, lethargy, and increased drinking.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s time to act fast and contact your vet! 🚨

Stay safe and keep your pets cool this heatwave! 🌞🐶🐱

🦴 Crcuiate Ligament Repair Surgery 🦴

If your dog is struggling with mobility or limping, it could be a sign of a torn cruciate ligament or other joint issues. These injuries are more common than you might think, but with the right care, your pet can bounce back!

Take Shika, for example. Her ligament ruptured, but thanks to a successful cruciate ligament repair, we've stabilised her knee and set her on the path to recovery. We use a range of surgical techniques depending on the patient, and Shika’s treatment was tailored specifically for her needs. After a thorough set of x-rays to assess her knee, we went ahead with surgery – and now, she’s already on her way to running in the park again! 🐾🎉

If you’ve noticed your pet slowing down or limping, we’re here to help. There’s no need to worry – we’ve got a plan to get them moving comfortably again.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to learn more about cruciate surgery options for your pet!

Meet the Team - Dr Meg 🩺👩🏼‍⚕️

Meg has started with us this year a few days a week and we are so happy to have her in clinic helping your pets!
Meg graduated vet school in 2018 and initially worked in Bathurst for 5 years at a busy mixed animal practice. She has since moved back to Sydney to be closer to family.
She enjoys consulting and surgery and is happy to treat any animal that walks, flies, or hops into the building! 🐾

In her spare time, you'll find her at Parkrun with her partner, or taking her dog Sven to the dog beach for a swim. 💦🐶

🐾 Beware – Ticks are here in full force! 🐾
Do you remember when you last gave tick prevention?

As the weather warms up, it’s crucial to stay alert about tick paralysis in our pets. Most tick paralysis cases seen by vets are due to a lapse in tick prevention being given, so we urge everyone to make sure they are up to date and have continuous reminders.

🦠 Signs to Watch For:
Weakness or unsteady gait
Difficulty swallowing, retching, or vomitting
Disinterest in food
Changes in bark or meow
Rapid breathing

🕵️‍♀️ Prevention Tips:
Regularly check your pets for ticks, especially after outdoor adventures
Use vet-recommended tick prevention treatments
Keep your yard tidy to reduce tick habitats

If you notice a tick on your pet and/or any concerning signs, contact us right away! Early intervention can make all the difference. 🏥❤️

Let’s keep our furry friends safe this season!

📸 Levi recently suffered from tick paralysis, but after a few days in hospital to have the tick antiserum and a haircut to make sure no further ticks were found, he was able to go home and has been recovering well! 💗

Veterinary Nurse Appreciation Week!
🩺 Why do you love being a veterinary nurse?
To be a part of the journey for so many pets, whether healthy or unwell, feels so special. I love being a vet nurse for those pets that have been in hospital for days and they finally start eating again, or the treat dispenser/scratch distracter for those pets that don't always love their vet visits.

👩🏼‍⚕️Why our vets love working with Kate
Kate joined us during the early days of the COVID pandemic and made an immediate positive impact on our clinic.
Always friendly and smiling, she has magical powers that can charm even the crankiest patient, especially those reluctant to have their injections!

I love being a vet nurse because I love being around animals. In this world, I don't think there is anything better than to study, protect, and be in awe of animals.

👩🏼‍⚕️ Why our vets love working with Tash
Ever so patient and calm, nothing ever seems to fluster nurse Tash.
If she’s not working with us as a vet nurse, or working in a pharmacy on the weekends, or studying vet nursing at TAFE, she is looking after 2 rabbits and an elderly cat! A busy lady and kind animal lover, she is a valued member of the nursing team here!

Happy Vet Nurse Appreciation Week to our wonderful team of veterinary nurses! 🥳💚

Veterinary nurses are your first contact in the office when it comes time for your pets care, they speak to you about what issues are facing your pets, and help to prepare them for treatment, keeping them calm and comfortable.
When your pet has to stay at the clinic, the vet nurse is the one who makes sure their bandages are changed, they’re fed and watered, and that they get some time spent with love and attention so they aren’t lonely during their stay. 🐶🐱🐰🐭🐦
Even more importantly, they work with the vet during the operations to make sure that everything goes smoothly.
In short, they’re just as important to your pet’s welfare and happiness during treatment as the vet themselves! They are so crucial to the running of a veterinary hospital, and we are so lucky to have such a special group to work with! This week, we are celebrating and thanking these incredible veterinary nurses for all they do! 👩🏼‍⚕️✨️

Stay tuned for more posts on each of our lovely vet nurses 🌞

🐰✨ Say hello to Dodger, a brave bunny who recently visited us for a lump removal surgery. This lump needed to be surgically removed because of its size and the intermittent irritation it was causing him.
We’re happy to report that Dodger did exceptionally well through the procedure! 🎉
After his surgery, he enjoyed a delicious post-op snack of kale and carrot—his favourite treats for a speedy recovery. 🥬🥕

We’re so proud of how resilient he’s been and can’t wait to see him hopping around happily again soon! 🐇

🩺 Ultrasounds 📹

🐾 Meet Basil, our brave fur-friend who recently had an abdominal ultrasound at our clinic!

Basil's family noticed he wasn’t his usual happy self and was experiencing vomiting, so they brought him in for a vet check. After a thorough examination, it was clear that further investigation was needed. That's when we turned to the power of ultrasound.

Why an ultrasound, you ask? 🤔
Non-Invasive & Pain-Free: Unlike some diagnostic methods, ultrasounds are gentle and are non-invasive procedures. Basil was calm and comfortable throughout the process. 💤
Detailed Images: Ultrasound provides us with real-time, detailed images of the internal organs. This helps us pinpoint exactly what's going on inside Basil's tummy. 🖼️
Quick & Accurate: It’s a fast way to get accurate information, allowing us to make informed decisions about the best course of treatment.

In Basil's case, the ultrasound revealed that he had a very upset gastrointestinal tract. 🌟 We're working on a treatment plan to help him feel better soon!

Basil was very good for his belly shave to perform the ultrasound and enjoyed his cuddles with Nurse Portea 🐶💚
