Why do cats react to catnip? 🌿😸🧐

Catnip (or Nepeta cataria if your kitty is fancy), is a herb that belongs to the mint family. It’s native to Europe and Asia but, luckily for cats, has been imported worldwide 🌏

But why do cats get so weird ‘n’ wacky around catnip? 🤪 It’s due to the essential oil Nepetalactone, found in microscopic bulbs that coat the leaves, seedpods, and stems of catnip. The smell of this active chemical mimics the pheromones cats give off and some cats go crazy for it! That’s right, just some. You may have noticed that you’ve had cats that have reacted to catnip, while others have not. That’s because around 30% of cats aren’t affected by it – it’s actually an inherited gene that determines whether they will feel any effects! 🧬🤯

While catnip might make some cats act like a kitten again, kittens under 6-9 months old are actually unlikely to experience any effects. And some cats won’t get playful and quirky from the herb at all but will be relaxed and peaceful. A cat’s reaction lasts from 10 to 30 minutes, then it can take a few hours for your cat to react to catnip again.

If you want to add some enrichment to your home for your cat, consider keeping some dried catnip in the cupboard to sprinkle on their scratchers or play areas, use a catnip spray on their bedding or plush toys, or get them some catnip toys like those from Yeowww 🌿😸

Check out the wonderful range of catnip products available at our Cat Boutique.

😻 Happy forever homes 😻

Hope is getting soooo much braver now but still is taking things at her pace, naturally.
The pics of the chair was a triumphant moment of bravery for her, which she did on her own! She's very curious about the cat tv right outside with the pigeons and lorikeets but hasn't quite figured out if they're a threat or simply pure entertainment yet.
She's defs a night owl, also no real surprises there, so naturally I'm adjusting my sleep schedule for her. No big deal.
What's surprised me more than anything is I didn't understand how fiercely, vehemently and ferociously protective of her I'd immediately become.
Like, take-a-bullet, die-on-a-hill, John "Baba Yaga" Wick kind of protective.
I feel like I've levelled up as a human because of this little life.

🐈🐈 Adoption update 🐈🐈

Last week there was one adoption that had us all smiling from ear to ear. We’re absolutely delighted for darling Dora (pictured) and were thrilled to receive these lovely photos of her exploring her new forever home. This snuggly sweetheart has been busy testing out all available soft spots for catnaps and purring away to show just how happy she is 💕 We also waved goodbye to meowvellous Midnight, wondrous Whatnot, phenomenal pair Melvin and Scully as well as four furry bundles of fun. Wishing all our adopted felines friends blissful futures in their new homes 😸😻😽

😻 Happy forever homes 😻

We are very happy with our new feline member. While there have been some teething problems between him and our old girl Silver, things are slowly improving and our house is big enough to ensure they both have spaces of their own.
We have named him Kiki. He is an absolute delight. He loves to be around people. If he's left alone for even a short time he will demand cuddles and you will find yourself doing chores with him on your shoulder. He has play sessions throughout the day with the kids and will sleep on their laps when tuckered out. He is bringing all of us much joy.
Thank you for all you've done to connecting us to Kiki and making us his forever family.

🌅 It’s beginning to warm up and maybe you’ve noticed your cat getting sprightlier… or meowing for breakfast earlier in the morning 🤤

Perhaps your cat could benefit from losing a bit of weight they put on over the colder months, particularly our older kitty friends. It’s important to keep our kitties in tip top shape to reduce the risk of health issues like diabetes, fatty liver disease, and arthritis. Here are some ways to encourage your cat to be more active so they can live their best (9) lives 🤟

🏃‍♀️ Catnip pre-workout
For some cats, catnip makes them super playful! It can be a great “pre-workout” to stimulate their senses and get them prepped for pouncin’. Catnip comes in many forms: from the actual plant you can grow, to packaged dried and crushed catnip leaves, to catnip-stuffed or infused toys.

🏃‍♀️ Interactive toys
Use interactive toys when you play with your cat (like a laser pointer) or set them up for your cat when they're alone (like a treat puzzle). These will keep them more active and give them some variety during their playtime.

🏃‍♀️ Scavenger hunt
Before you leave for the day, hide your cat’s kibble or treats in areas around the house so they have to work for their food! They’ll likely enjoy the mental challenge, too.

🏃‍♀️ Cat exercise wheel
A great option for indoors-only cats who need to release pent up energy. Your cat can be trained to go on an exercise wheel – it may require treats and patience! This will be a faster process if they start while they’re young.

A cat's diet also impacts their weight and overall health. If you’re worried about your cat’s weight, your vet will be able to recommend the best food for them 🐟🍗

😸 ADOPT MEOW 😸

Wonderful Wolfey is looking for some loving humans to make up his pack, to be considered worthy you’ll have to be happy to follow his lead, provide optimum cheek scratches and plenty of tasty treats. At heart this fluffy fellow is a super smooch, and he is sure to impress with his affectionate purr-sonality. Wolfey will need some time to get used to his new home but once his confidence grows, you’ll get to know his cuddly side and then there will be an endless supply of snuggles accompanied by plenty of purrs. This gentle guy is looking for a forever home to call his own, where he will be ever vigilant in his search for snacks and pats. He has experience with around children and other felines, and he may enjoy having a kitty companion or little two-legged playmate as part of his pack as well. Wolfey is best-suited to an indoor-only forever home to protect his pale pink nose and Wolfey has never set paws outdoors, so he is used to an indoor lifestyle. You’ll have a howling good time with Wolfey in your life!

😻 Happy forever homes 😻

We’re happy to send you some updates from Corey (the brother) and Tofu (cutest little sister) - named by their beloved hooman siblings. They’re settling in so well and we love every minute of it. Corey is really confident and always love cuddling. Tofu is a bit more reserved but once she’s in for a cuddle, she’s in 😺 - award winning purring 😹
Thank you so much for introducing Corey and Tofu to us, but more importantly for rescuing so many kittens for them to have a chance of a forever home.

👋How to introduce your cat to new people👋

Cats can often be reluctant to come out and socialise with people they don’t know, especially if they have anxiety or live in a quiet home – the hustle and bustle of having guests over may be scary for them (even if they’re super boisterous with you!).

However, there are some ways you can make your cat feel safe and secure when you welcome friends into your home... and maybe even eventually quell their fears so you can show them off in all their glory to your guests.

😌 While not always logistically possible, if you have an anxious cat you can get them used to someone’s scent before they come and visit by borrowing an item of clothing from them – like a scarf – and placing it in your home. Choose somewhere your cat has access to so they can give it a sniff!

😌 Let your cat go at their own pace. Your cat will become more stressed and anxious if you try to force an interaction, and they may build a negative association with your guest and become more fearful of them. Instead, let your cat be in a safe, quiet room and have your guest come in and get to their level. They can offer them a treat or a pat, depending on what your cat likes (if you have multiple guests over, you should space out these interactions).

😌 If you have a particularly anxious cat, leading up to having new people in your home you may want to use Feliway and calming treats or supplements. You can also talk to your vet about ongoing medication options if your cat suffers from anxiety.

Remember, a calm environment that’s as predictable as possible for your kitty is key to successfully getting them out of their shell when you have people over – as is your patience with them 🫶

He craves human company and attention and you’re bound to be enchanted by his fondness for rolling around to encourage lots of pats then making air bikkies when he is blissfully content. ❤️HAPPY ADOPTIVERSARY❤️

One year ago, we visited you in Enmore and you introduced us to a 7 month old kitten (Profiterole) who wound herself around our ankles. We were expecting to get an older cat, but we fell in love. Seiko is now 19 months old and switches regularly from glamour queen to teenage goose. We are so glad she picked us! She makes our house a home.

🐈 Have you ever had a cat walk into your life unexpectedly?
If you have, it might be the cat distribution system at play. We’re not kitten!
The cat distribution system is when you and the kitty stars align and the universe sees that you’re fit for a feline. ✨🐱 You’re sent the purrrfect match to love and care for – you’ll be at your new cat’s beck and claw for the rest of their life.
📰 The Guardian has picked up this breaking mews paw-ry, so you can read more about the cat distribution system below.

According to the popular concept, the universe presents people with cats when they are ready. But shelter experts say it’s more complicated than that

Our story

Cat Protection began in 1958, as a small group of just 10 volunteers dedicated to reducing the number of stray cats. They worked tirelessly to desex street cats and find them loving and responsible homes. In those early days, all they had was a post office box, some stationery and the home phone of our President and founder.

For 20 years our early members had no base of operations. Their spirit and perseverance saw them help many cats while raising funds to buy a property. In 1979 bequest income allowed Cat Protection to purchase the building that continues to be our home, 103 Enmore Road Newtown. In the beginning it housed our Op Shop and administrative operations but no cats. Several vets who we worked with to desex cats agreed to hold felines at their clinics so they could be adopted.

In 2003 our newly renovated cattery opened allowing us to rehome cats and kittens from our own, purpose-built premises.
