How to Help Wildlife During Hot and Dry Australian Summers 🦘🐨🦜🦎🐞

Hot and dry weather can be life-threatening for wildlife, but simple actions can make a significant difference:

1. Provide Water

Why It Matters: Animals often have no escape from extreme heat, and dehydration can be fatal during heatwaves. Providing accessible water sources can help them survive.

How to Help:

Leave shallow dishes of water in shaded areas. Avoid metal containers in sunny spots as they can heat up and become dangerous.

Place some water dishes higher up or in trees to protect wildlife from predators.

Use shallow bowls to prevent small birds from drowning. Cat litter trays work well and are inexpensive.

For larger containers, like buckets, add large twigs, rocks, or bricks to provide an escape route for animals that might fall in.

Keep bird baths clean and filled with fresh water to encourage safe drinking and bathing.

2. Additional Tips

Monitor Water Sources: Check water dishes regularly to ensure they haven’t dried out or been contaminated.

Create Multiple Stations: Set up several water sources around your property to reach a variety of animals, from birds to ground-dwelling creatures.

Consider Local Wildlife Needs: Native animals like kangaroos, koalas, and possums may need ground-level water, while birds and tree-dwelling animals benefit from elevated sources.

3. Why Your Actions Matter

During extreme heat waves, wildlife such as birds, possums, lizards, and even insects face dehydration and heat stress. Providing water can be the difference between life and death.

4. Be Aware of Wildlife Behaviour

Animals seeking water may behave unusually. Nocturnal animals may appear during the day. You may see wildlife in unexpected or unusual places. This is often a sign of distress.

If you encounter an animal showing signs of heat stress (e.g., lethargy, panting, or collapse), contact your local wildlife rescue organization for advice.

By taking these small but meaningful steps, you can play a vital role in protecting Australia’s unique wildlife during increasingly harsh summers.

Even milder summer temperatures can make a car dangerously hot, very quickly.

At an outside temperature of just 20°C in warmer months:

The car's interior can rise to 24°C within 5 minutes.
It can reach 27°C in 10 minutes.
36°C in 30 minutes.
46°C in an hour!

When outside temperatures exceed 28°C, dogs struggle to cool themselves naturally through panting, increasing the risk of life threatening heat stroke.

A dog’s normal body temperature is 37.5–39°C.
When a car reaches 43°C, this will lead to multiple organ failure and DEATH❗️❗️

DO NOT ENTRAP YOUR PET TO SUFFER A TERRIBLY PAINFUL DEATH IN YOUR CAR!!

Taking your dog out is simply not worth the risk!

🚫 Please do not buy this Christmas! Throw them away if your dog gets one as a gift. Giving rawhide to a dog is never a good idea.

Many of these 'treats' result in the dog spending some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas.
The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides, and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat.
More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers, which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.
On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium, and formaldehyde.

If that wasn’t bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews become slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

At JJ's Paws 4 Fun, we care deeply about your pets' safety and wellbeing—especially in the scorching Australian summer! 🐾 Here are some crucial tips to protect your fur babies as temperatures rise:

🚫 Avoid Hot Pavement:
Pavement and sand can become dangerously hot. Resulting in severe and painful burns on your dog’s paws.
If you can’t hold your hand on the ground for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for a walk!
Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it's cooler.

🚫 No Utes or Cars in the Heat:
NEVER leave pets on the back of utes or inside cars in hot weather. Temperatures can skyrocket within minutes, putting your pet at risk for heatstroke and death!!

💦 Hydration is Key:
Ensure your pets have constant access to fresh, cool water.
Carry a portable water bowl on outings, and consider adding some ice cubes to keep it chilled.

🌳 Shade and Cool Spots:
Create shady, cool spaces where your pets can relax during the day. Ideally, bring them indoors or to well-ventilated areas when it’s hottest outside.

🧊 Cool Treats & Sprinklers:
Help your pet beat the heat with frozen treats, damp towels to lie on, shell pools, or even some fun with a sprinkler! These are great ways to keep them entertained while staying cool.

By taking these simple precautions, you’ll keep your pets comfortable, safe, and happy this summer!
