Puncture wounds in the foot qualify as medical emergencies, due to the number of vital structures just beneath the sole that can be physically damaged and/or contaminated with bacteria when they are penetrated by a sharp object.

If your horse steps on a nail or other sharp object and it remains embedded in the hoof, resist the temptation to pull the nail out and consult with your veterinarian first. Leaving the nail in place will allow the vet to take x-rays of the foot before removal, which helps to identify exactly what structures have been penetrated, and to plan the most appropriate strategy for dealing with the situation.

If your veterinarian advises, carefully remove the nail to prevent the horse from stepping on it and driving it deeper into the hoof cavity. As you remove it, be sure to mark the exact point and depth of entry with tape and/or a marker so the veterinarian can assess the extent of damage. Apply antiseptic to the wound, and wrap to prevent additional contamination while you wait for your appointment.

Penetrating hoof wounds can be extremely serious and shouldn’t be underestimated. The prognosis for successful recovery depends on quick action to identify the path of the nail, treatment of potential infection and mechanical damage to the foot, and proper aftercare. As always, consult your horse doctor for more information and advice!

𝐀 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 🐴💙🩺🪱

- Do not deworm your foal before 8 weeks of age. No stages of parasite will be susceptible to treatment yet so this will cause resistance.

- Deworm your foal every 8 weeks until 6 months of age.

- Perform a FEC at 6 months of age

- After weaning, turn your weanlings out into the cleanest pastures on your property.

- Never use moxidectin (Equest) in foals.

- Use faecal egg count reduction tests annually (one just prior to worming and a - second test 2 weeks later) on a group of foals to figure out if you have an ascarid or strongyle resistance problem in your herd

- In the past, mares were often dewormed in the last month of foaling or soon after. This was to prevent the transmission of Stronglyoides westeri to foals (a cause of diarrhoea). This is no longer recommended. The mares’ routine deworm in spring will cover against this parasite. If disease does develop in the foal, it is usually self-limiting and if treatment is required it is easily managed.

- 𝟴 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 - worm with a benzimidazole class of drug (e.g. fenbendazole)

- 𝟭𝟲 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 - worm with a benzimidazole class of drug (e.g. fenbendazole)

- 𝟲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 - worm with a benzimidazole class of drug (e.g. fenbendazole). We may recommend a different treatment if the FEC shows we may have an ascarid resistance problem in your herd.

- 𝟵 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 - for the 9-month-old treatment, use a product that also targets tapeworms (i.e. that contains praziquantel/pyrantel/morantel).
