***EDIT*** has been adopted!

For adoption!

This sweet girl has had all initial vet work completed and is now ready to go.
She is around 15 weeks old, and very smoochy- loves her pats!
She's not really been tested with other cats or dogs whilst in the clinic, so unsure how she would play with others.
As with all our rehomes- indoors only to keep them (and wildlife) as safe and protected as possible.
Adoption fee is $200

FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER
Stuart Knox

I get back from holidays and am greeted by buffalo fly carrying cattle away. Perfect conditions for pestilence, but hopefully not floods or fires.
I had an interesting discussion with a dairy farmer about his herd, and the low conception rate came up. Pregnancy rate is a function of conception rate and submission rate. His pregnancy rate was ok as he started mating early, so the cows had many opportunities to get pregnant, therefore the herd’s inter calving interval was ok. He also has enough replacements due to the won- der of sexed semen. (We just need sexed
semen to be more fertile !) So the poor conception rate isn’t really an issue for him. This is why pregnant at 100 days and empty at 200 days can be used as a better measure of herd performance. Beef herds, in comparison, whether using bulls or AI plus bulls, have far better conception rates, as beef cows aren’t the high stress producers that dairy cows are in their first third of lactation.
Alexa had a woody tongue case a couple of weeks ago. Woody tongue bacteria mainly live in wet soils, hence the low country. It’s easy enough to treat, with antibiotics and sodide (in empty cows), but very difficult to get a cure. The symptoms mostly resolve but often recur, I’m not sure if they are new infections or bacteria remain as a focus for new flare ups. Sodide is a drug that improves antibiotic pe*******on of the tongue, but causes abortion. Lumpy Jaw is a similar condition that is hard to cure.

And in the Horses.......
Fistulous withers, in the old days, was
more common due to horses being in har- ness. The withers have a poor blood supply and if infections became established they were very difficult to cure. Fistulas, from abscesses, or foreign bodies, are hard to get antibiotics to the site of infection. We have a horse in the practice that had a foreign body removed years ago, not by us, and has had draining sinus tracts ever since. It improves on antibiotics, then comes back.
Umbilical hernias in young horses are often measured by how many fingers can be poked in the hole to reduce them. not very accurate when fingers are different sizes. However, the hernia stays the same size, so as the horse grows the hernia be- comes relatively smaller. One finger hernias mostly need no attention. Two finger hernias can have the skin tightened with an elastrator, three or more may have to be surgically repaired.

⚠️IMPORTANT MICROCHIP UPDATE FOR PET OWNERS
Soon HomeSafe ID, the microchip registration database used by AWLQ , RSPCA , many vets and rescue groups will no longer be functional
This means you will no longer be able to access the database to update details or identify your pet if it goes missing . We thus urge all our clients to check what company your pets microchip is with and if with HomeSafe ID register them with another company to keep them safe and easily identified if ever they should become lost.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
*Check your pets microchip Registration at Pet Address http://petaddress.com.au This will tell you which company your details are with . If you' re unsure of your microchip # we can scan your pet for you
*Re -register with another company if your details are with HomeSafeID . You can either do this by phone or online for a small fee set by the new registry
*It is also a good time if you are not with HomesafeID to check your details are correct with the registry you are with.
If you pet's registration is not updated and they become lost , vets, councils and shelters will be
unable to view your contact details when scanning the chip. This makes reuniting you with your pet
much harder
Please check NOW - this will ensure your pets future security and safety. ⚠️

EDIT- HAS A NEW HOME!

🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ Ready for a new home!! 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

Applications/Expressions of interest

This handsome boy is ready for a new home. He is around 15 weeks old, and was found as a street baby near one of the local dentists. He was the most timid of the 3 found, and is still slowly coming out of his shell. Because of this, he MUST go to a suitable home- he needs a quiet, patient home to thrive.
We recommend indoors only, particularlyfor the more timid ones. In time, he will make a lovely pet.
Adoption fee is $200, and all initial vet work is complete.

**EDIT** Adopted into a new home

🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛ Free adoption to approved & suitable home 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

This big male was surrendered to us as his elderly owner could no longer keep him. He is a little unsettled and nervous in the clinic environment, and may take time to settle into a new home- so we would love someone patient and understanding to give him a second chance at a new life.
He is 2 & 1/2 years old, so still only young. The poor big guy is probably feeling very confused as to why he has ended up here...😪
As all his vetwork has already been completed and up to date, there is no adoption fee. However, he MUST go to a quiet home, and we recommend indoors only.

I found this interesting and thought I would share for our horse clients.

The classic summer mix of rain, warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine can quickly cause a pasture flurry in the matter of just a few days! So, it is very important after such spells, that we take extra care and vigilance on our horses who are more vulnerable to high sugar diets ☀️

Did you know that the actual time of day can have an effect on pasture sugar levels?

As light intensity increases, so does a plants photosynthetic rate, which produces sugars, right up until several hours after sunset. It often isn't until the depths of the night that the plant has processed its photosynthetic goods, and returned to its baseline level, ready for the next day of sunlight. This means that the early morning period can be the most favourable time for low sugar grazing.

If you have concerns about your ponies consumption, sugar levels or nutrition, you can reach out to our team at [email protected]
