One of Australia’s main microchip database providers has shut down. If your pet is registered with HomeSafe ID, now is the time to act and transfer their details to another provider.

If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number, contact your veterinarian, local council, or animal welfare shelter. They can scan your pet and provide the microchip number along with advice.

If you’d like to protect your pet with a microchip, reach out to your local vet for more information as each state have different provider recommendations. 🧡

Meet gorgeous Ruby-Rose! 🥰🌹🦋💛

We took x-rays of her knees morning day. She has been sore and limping on her hind right leg and we suspect she has a luxating knee cap (patella). Some dogs have an anatomical abnormality which allows the knee cap to luxate or ‘pop-out’ of its normal groove. This causes pain and discomfort, as the knee cap rubs on areas of the joint which aren’t covered with cartilage. If left untreated over time the cartilage becomes worn away and the knee cap rubs against the exposed bone causing additional pain.

Medial patella luxation is often seen in smaller breed dogs and younger patients are most commonly presented. The x-rays show that the patella is positioned correctly just above the trochlear groove, but further clinical examination is needed to assess the severity of Ruby-Rose’s condition and treatment options.

‼️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: PET MICROCHIPPING‼️
Microchip Pet Registry company, HomeSafeID, appears to cease to operate online soon.

Please check where your pet's microchip is registered, to ensure your details can be found in case your fluffy family member goes missing / gets found.

Feel free to come in to have your pet scanned by one of our friendly staff.

‼️ IMPORTANT UPDATE: PET MICROCHIPPING‼️
Microchip Pet Registry company, HomeSafeID, will soon cease to operate online.

What does this mean? 👇
If you know your pet is registered with HomeSafeID, you will need to change your microchip registration to another company 📝

If your pet's registration isn't updated, should they go missing or are found, vets/councils/animal shelters will no longer be able to view your pet’s ownership details listed on their microchip when it is scanned, making it difficult to reunite you!

ℹ️ Find out how to check your pet’s microchip and change to a new registry 👉 bit.ly/3Qe3ZbT

If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number or have lost their paperwork with their registration details, contact your veterinarian, council or animal shelter. They can scan your pet and provide the microchip number.

If you adopted a pet from RSPCA with a HomeSafe ID registry or had a microchip implanted at a RSPCA Community Day, while we cannot update your pet’s microchip details for you, we can help you find your adoptee’s microchip number and answer any questions you may have on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or your local shelter.

We love before & after photos!
So let us show you a few of some dental procedures we have done recently.

Just like humans, cats and dogs can develop plaque and tartar on their teeth, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and infections if left untreated.

Poor dental health can contribute to other health issues too, including heart- and liver disease and kidney problems. Bacteria from infections can enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs.

So keep your pet's mouth healthy to prevent bad breath and discomfort or even pain. Contact us for a FREE DENTAL CHECK!

Do I really need to vaccinate my puppy against parvovirus?
The short answer is: ABSOLUTELTY!

What is Parvovirus?
Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a highly contagious and potentially deadly viral infection that affects dogs. Puppies are particularly vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing.

This virus attacks the gastrointestinal system of dogs, causing severe symptoms such as vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, loss of appetite, lethargy, dehydration and even death.

Parvovirus spreads through direct contact with an infected dog or contaminated environments, such as shared parks, kennels, and other places where dogs gather. This extremely resilient virus can survive in the environment for years (!), making it easy to spread and very difficult to fully eradicate.

Parvovirus can progress very quickly, and dogs can become severely ill or die within days if they are not treated promptly. Treatment usually involves intensive care and supportive treatment to combat dehydration and infections.

This may sound scary, but a simple yearly vaccination will protect your dog. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or book here: https://tewantinvet.com.au/.

Before anaesthesia procedures we provide our clients with the option of a blood test for their furry companion. But why?...
28/01/2025

Before anaesthesia procedures we provide our clients with the option of a blood test for their furry companion.
But why? And what do we learn from that? Today we'll explain a little bit about plasma.

By examining your pet’s blood plasma, we can assess organ function (liver, kidneys), hydration status, protein levels, and more. It can help identify metabolic disorders (e.g. diabetes, Cushing's Disease, thyroid disorders), infections, inflammation, liver or kidney issues, and even certain cancers. The plasma’s colour and composition provide critical information that aids in diagnosing and monitoring health conditions.

In the photo below you can see some recent blood samples we took. As you can see the plasma in the tube on the left shows normal plasma. The pale yellow colour indicates proper liver function and balanced protein levels.

The tube on the right shows milky/cloudy plasma. This is caused by a high concentration of fat in the blood, possibly due to pancreatitis, hypothyroidism, or diabetes.

Yellowish plasma is often a sign of liver disease or haemolysis. Pink/red plasma indicates that red blood cells have been damaged, releasing haemoglobin into the plasma. This might suggest haemolytic anaemia or contamination of the sample.

We do blood tests BEFORE the procedure, so we can assess your pet’s overall health and identify any potential issues that could affect the success of the surgery or anaesthesia. Sometimes these issues need to be addressed before we can proceed, as the test is a safety measure to ensure that your pet is in the best possible health for the procedure.
