Then also today further up the Coast, MWRCC vollie Silke Stuckenbrock did an awesome catch and release at Little Beach, Port Stephens.

The gorgeous Pelican was a juvenile female with line around her wing though no hook was found and the line was able to be taken off with no other issues! Silke was assisted by a very helpful member of the public!

Tree rescues are no walk in the park – unless you’ve got the legends from Pat McGrath Tree Services on your team! 🌳💪

When a member of the public spotted a cormorant tangled in fishing line and hanging from a tree in a super tricky spot, Donovan and his son Jhie didn’t hesitate to step up to support MWRCC vollie Michelle Proudfoot. With their incredible skills (and a whole lot of heart), they climbed into the tree, cleared away some branches, and carefully cut the one holding the fishing line.

As soon as the branch came free, so did the cormorant – the fishing line pulled into the tree, and the bird flew straight into the water, diving out of sight in seconds. While we couldn’t confirm whether the hook came free with the line, this was the best possible outcome for such a challenging scenario.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for this lucky bird, but we just have to shout out Pat McGrath Tree Services for their amazing effort! This isn’t their first rodeo with us either – it’s the second cormorant rescue they’ve helped with, jumping into action even after they’d wrapped up their workday. Their generosity of spirit and care for our local wildlife is second to none. 💚

Let’s show them some love – they’re a local family-run Coast business, and the kind of crew you want in your corner in an emergency.

A very special Pelican Time today when one of our own did their first dive rescue, for our first rescue of 2025 on a young male pelican with a precariously placed fishing hook in his glottis/neck! It was situated so, that we didnt want to try and get out without vet assistance!

Michelle Proudfoot did an awesome dive to the absolute delight of the crowd that were there learning about our amazing pelicans and she came out of the water to them showing their appreciation with lots of applause!!!! Two awesome members of the public were there and caught Michelle's dive on video and then sent it us! Thanks so much guys! We really appreciated your help today and hope your kids dont get too jealous when you show them what you did! And enjoy those cocktails from Meantime@theentrance 😉 💙 they also got to name the pelican and chose Michael!!!

Michael the Pelican was seen by SASH at Tuggerah and they were able to get the hook out and he will stay with us overnight and be released back into his home tomorrow!!!

Whoo Hoo! Well done team!!!

Happy New Year from all of us at Marine Wildlife Rescue Central Coast! As the clock resets, we’re diving into 2025 with hope, gratitude, a few extra scratches from Cranky Peli Arnie, and maybe just a little sand between our toes. This past year, we’ve rescued pelicans in peril, turtles in trouble, and countless critters caught in sticky situations. None of it would have been possible without our incredible community of volunteers, wildlife warriors, and supporters. Thank you! May your 2025 be filled with kindness and courage – let’s make it fin-tastic!

The Story of Zaidyn continues! A HUGE thank you to vet extraordinaire Uzair Carrim from Tuggerah Veterinary Clinic, who removed the floating hook from Zaidyn’s neck, and got most of the remaining hook imbedded in his mandible. Vollie Brenda Campbell then took a groggy Z home for some expert care and TLC until all his wounds heal up. Z’s on a cocktail of antibiotics and painkillers, and the stitches in his neck and beak should be out in two weeks. He’s awake, feisty, and ready for the new year (and maybe a fish or two) – job well done!

Getting ready to celebrate the New Year? Please think twice about fireworks: they cause unnecessary, preventable harm to our animals and environment. Besides, a bit of creativity and out-of-the-box thinking is all it takes to welcome in a new chapter in environmentally-friendly style!

MWRCC Vollie Robert Olive was diving at Terrigal Haven this morning and when he was getting out of the water, he noticed a pelican with fishing line trailing! Not having any of his pelican gear with him - he put the call out to the team and Michelle Proudfoot answered the call! She showed up with some fish and pelican gear, just in case the bird needed to go the vet! Rob did an awesome dive and caught the bird and they were able to relieve it from the hook and release straight away!!

Whoo Hoo - way to go team!

Meet Zaidyn, a very lucky pelican! On Saturday morning, a sharp-eyed member of the public spotted Zaidyn injured at Picnic Point and managed to catch and secure him until MWRCC's Cathy arrived to transport Z to SASH Tuggerah. Z had a rough time – FIVE fishing hooks embedded in him, including three in his beak! (Luckily, he didn't swallow any of them.)
A huge thank you to the amazing team at SASH Tuggerah, who successfully removed three of the hooks. Z still has a tough road ahead – the tip of a lure hook remains deeply embedded in his mandible, and another hook is floating just beneath the skin on his neck. Surgery is on the horizon, but Z is in the expert care of MWRCC vollie Brenda while he heals up, so his outlook is good!

Unfortunately, not knowing that his 'imprisonment' was only temporary and that his well-meaning captors had his best interests at heart, Z managed to badly bruise and bloody his beak while struggling in the metal dog carrier he was kept in until our team arrived. If possible, it's always better to secure birds in soft-sided pet containers, or use a towel to gently 'burrito' their bodies and secure their wings while holding them. You can also drape a towel over their heads to keep them calm.

(PS: Zaidyn's named after our mate at Zelrose IT - thanks for lending us your eftpos machine!)

Heading to the Central Coast these school holidays? Don’t miss Pelican Time! This much-loved event happens DAILY during the school holidays, and kicks off at 3:30pm at The Entrance, where you’ll get up close with the Coast’s iconic pelicans. Swing by to say hi to our incredible volunteers, and ask us anything about these majestic birds and the marine wildlife that call the area home.

If you’re lucky, you might even witness our team in action rescuing an injured pelican! Just this Saturday, volunteers Michelle and Robert saved the day when they spotted a pelican with a fishing hook, lure, and line tangled under its wing. Thanks to Rob’s impressive dive and Michelle’s expert care, the bird was freed, treated, and released back into the wild straight away – a fantastic team effort!

A big shoutout as well to My NRMA Roadside for supporting our Founder, Cathy, to ensure our team can cover every school holiday shift. This iconic Aussie business has been helping Aussies on the road for over 100 years, and they’re lending a hand to assist our pelicans, too!

Yesterday, sadly, the entangled whale from Tuesday washed ashore at Lakes Beach.
Unfortunately, we were not surprised given the poor condition of the animal when we first saw it.
Hopefully we can learn from this and help make a better environment for all of the sea creatures.

Thank you to all of the MWRCC volunteers who responded to this, you do such a wonderful job.
Also thanks to NPWS, Marine Rescue, Central Coast Council, Lakes Surf Club and countless members of the public for all your help.

Remember, if you sea any marine creature in need of help please call MWRCC on 0478 439 965 asap.

Thank you Chel McBride for your photo.

The whale that was entangled off Terrigal yesterday has not been sighted today.
The extent of its health and complete disengagement has not yet been confirmed.
Although some of the debris was cut free, a full assessment is yet to be done and NPWS are investigating.

We were happy to assist NPWS with our observations and advice, and hope they are successful at learning the outcome for the whale.

Update on the entangled whale

This afternoon NPWS and Marine Rescue, with the intel from MWRCC, the attempt to disentangle the whale off the Central Coast was called off, due to deteriorating conditions. The wind, swell and chop had increased, the whale behaviour was erratic and the presence of over 12 large sharks, made it too difficult.

The team will try again tomorrow.

Thanks to all who tried hard today.

If you sight the whale please call MWRCC asap on 0478 439 965
