Desexed male, collar with ID tags & phone numbers.

***ATTENTION: TICK WARNING***

You may have seen the recent news about a current nationwide shortage of paralysis tick anti-serum which is used to treat cases of tick paralysis. Without access to this potentially life-saving medication, this shortage means that if your pet is affected with tick paralysis, it will be even more difficult to treat.

Coupled with the shortage of tick anti-serum, concerningly we are also seeing a spike in the number of pets requiring treatment for tick paralysis this year. It is critical to ensure your pet is protected against this potentially fatal condition. Prevention is better than treatment!

Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to protect your dog. Firstly, we urgently and strongly recommend all dogs be given an effective preventative. Please CHECK your product to make sure it treats for Australian Paralysis Ticks & check the date you last applied it. If you are not sure if your product is correct, our Vet Nurses are more than happy to help over the phone.

Secondly, dogs and cats should be checked DAILY for ticks, even if on a preventative. More information on how to perform a thorough tick search can be found here Tick Check.

Finally, be on the lookout for any of the signs of tick paralysis as the earlier cases are diagnosed, the better the outcome. Signs of tick paralysis can vary, and may include:

- Altered mobility, which may include loss of coordination and weakness, often seen as a wobbly walk in dogs & not wanting to jump up onto furniture in cats
- Change or loss of voice/bark
- Laboured or rapid breathing, grunting noises and/or abdominal heaving, raspy breathing
- Coughing, gagging and vomiting
- Loss of appetite (not in early cases)
- Appearing generally unwell

If you find a tick on your pet or notice any of these signs, call the clinic to discuss with one of our team.

Please contact us for more information or book your appointment to discuss with our vet team on 3300 1533.

I NEED A HOME

I'm Pebbles! I am a 2.5 years old desexed boy and I'm sweet but also cheeky. Mum says I am a Domestic Shorthair cross Ragdoll and up to date on all my vaccinations. I am currently living with a couple of those stinky tail-waggers you humans call dogs and we get on pretty well.

Unfortunately my family are moving interstate and unable to take me with them. Could you be my forever family?

The team at The Gap Vet Surgery are helping me find my forever home so give them a call if you might be interested. Ph: 3300 1533

Before and after photos of dentistry.

Miss Nellie and her sister Bella visited us yesterday for their routine Dental Ultrasonic scale and Polish. Here are the before and after shots of Nellie, demonstrating thick yellow/cream calculus on her teeth. If left untreated this calculus will cause the gum line to recede and can damage teeth, resulting in pain, infection and tooth loss. 😱

Getting regular dental cleans like Nellie and Bella not only mean no nasty doggy-breath for their family, but that they'll have healthy teeth for years to come. ❤️

Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over 3 years old have dental disease?

***Update - On a trial with new Mum & Doggy Brother 😍***

Seeking a furever home ❤️

We have a sweet kitten at the clinic looking for a loving home. Give us a call or drop in if you might be interested ☺️

Temporary Name: Minx
Age: Approx 4 months
S*x: Female, entire
Microchip: No

I am super cuddly but always ready to play! My favourite hobbies are doing zoomies around the clinic and chasing balls of paper. I'm not sure about dogs yet but I could probably make friends with the right dog. I love snuggling right under your chin and nuzzling. Come meet me! ❤️

Feel free to share this post with family and friends.

Lookout Ticks are about! 🙀

Sweet Winston visited us yesterday as he had a slightly wobbly gait in his hind limbs and some difficulty getting up.

Dr Luken found this Australian Paralysis Tick was the culprit and we immediately set to work putting in an intravenous catheter and administering tick antiserum. Thankfully Winston's mum picked up the symptoms very quickly so he was able to go home this afternoon after some TLC and a new short haircut.

Without treatment Winston would have become completely paralysed, had difficulty breathing, and would have aspirated food & water into his lungs. Tick season is generally around July - February but in The Gap we see the occasional tick at other times of the year too so stay vigilant!

A timely reminder to dose your furbabies with their flea and tick treatment ❤️

Giveaway! - Styrofoam eskis (with or without freezer bricks) and cardboard boxes

We're always looking for ways we can minimise our waste and impact on the environment and we thought there might be community members who could reuse these items instead of them ending up in landfill.

Miss Amelie is adorable but unfortunately suffers from Brachycephalic Obstructed Airway Syndrome like most of her breed (Pugs, French Bulldogs & Bulldogs) so her airways were too small to breathe properly.

Dr Scott performed surgery to widen Amelie's nares (nostrils) and shorten her soft palate, removing excess tissue which blocks the wind pipe. Now Amelie is both beautiful AND is a breath of fresh air😉 Check out the amazing surgical photos if you aren't too squeamish.
