Poor little Bonnie πŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ’–please keep her in your thoughts β€οΈβ€πŸ©ΉπŸ’–πŸ«ΆπŸ»

Yesterday afternoon we arrived home, opened the front gate and were greeted by a trail of blood.
We quickly realised it was little Bonnie πŸ˜”
Mick and I jumped into the car with her and headed straight toward Redlands Veterinary Clinic.
I called while we were on our way to let them know we were headed toward them.
From what we can ascertain our elderly, female dog has lashed out and bitten Bonnie. Before Bonnie is allowed to interact with the big dogs again we will take Missy for an assessment to see if she has pain somewhere that is causing this behaviour.
Bonnie was immediately given pain relief and after a thorough examination, X-rays and blood tests the findings are 4 small fractures and some lacerations. All on the right hand side of her head.
She will remain in the care of the Redlands Vet Clinic for at least another 24hrs. Today Bonnie has been eating, drinking and moving around. As expected there is a lot of swelling which makes checking some things tricky.
The costs of this could not of come at a worse time but that’s the way the cookie crumbles πŸ˜”
I am so thankful for the care, compassion and understanding of all of the staff, each and every one of them have gone above and beyond to ensure Bonnie is getting the absolute best care and treatment she could get πŸ’š

🌟 Ginger Cat 🐈 appreciation day 🌟

We LOVE Ginger cats, with all their idiosyncrasies, so what a wonderful chance to recognise some of our favourite red headed felines!!

Ginger cats have very unique personalities and we have been blessed to know some beautiful gingers in our time here at REDVET 🐈

Pictured here is handsome Jezza, who has had his fare share of medical issues across his 9 lives. Along with needing an eye removed due to a medical condition, Jezza also underwent surgery for chronic urinary blockages, a major surgery regularly performed here by our most experienced surgeons here at the clinic. Jezza has been a clinic favourite, especially with Drs Kat and Bec, for many years and epitomises all of the things we love most about ginger kitties 🐱

If you know of or are lucky enough to love your own ginger, please post their pic below ⬇️ for your chance to WIN a spot on Bravecto treatment, perfect as we enter the peak of tick activity here in Brisbane.

πŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ’– Annie’s A**l Gland Removal Surgery πŸ’–πŸ«ΆπŸ»

A**l glands πŸ™ˆ two words that no pet owner (or vet πŸ˜‰) like much to hear! In recent years, we have seen a major increase in the issues that these two seemingly innocuous little glands can cause. A**l glands are small sacs that excrete an oily substance designed to give identifying scent to bowel movements. When they become inflamed, blocked or infected, they can cause our pet’s significant discomfort & become a real pain in the butt (πŸ˜˜πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ)!

A**l gland blockages and chronic inflammation of the glands are especially common in some smaller breeds of dogs, and in dogs & cats with any sort of allergies, inflammatory bowel issues or dermatitis.

Many pets present regularly for expression of the glands, but with time, the sacs become inflamed and scarred. When it gets to the point that expression is becoming a too frequent necessity, or is a painful experience for the patient, then having the glands removed is a safe & effective option for providing our patients long term relief β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

The surgery is a tricky one, & should only be performed by surgeons with confidence and experience in the technique & procedure. It is also essential that patients receive appropriate after care to make sure they heal comfortably & completely.

We are very fortunate that here at Redlands, our in house surgeon, Dr Keith, who has been with us for nearly 17 years, is very confident in this procedure, having provided great relief to so many patients over the years by successfully removing these pesky glands. He & Dr Kat, along with the rest of our surgical and medical teams, have perfected our after care protocol, & it is something we confidently can offer our beautiful patients 🌟

As always, Annie was a model patient 🫢🏻 She had her glands removed a few months ago, & is now back to living her best pain free life. We are so grateful to her for sharing her story so that we can raise awareness about the relief this procedure can provide β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή Check out more at πŸ’– Pictured here being a & with one of her favourite vets Dr John. Thank you so much for these gorgeous pics and helping to get this message out to the community πŸ’–
We love to take any opportunity we can to make the management of chronic conditions in our beloved pets that little bit easier and more sustainable. We happily provide scripts, with, pending the pet’s condition and stability, between 3 and 6 months worth of repeats before a review consultation is needed β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

If you would like more info please don’t hesitate to reach out. And thank you Twistie for being a model patient as always πŸ’–πŸ’–

Let’s talk pricing on prescription pet medications. You can save money on regular prescription medication.

If you have a pet that needs regular prescription medication, ask your Vet if they will issue you prescription to purchase it at your local Pharmacy or an online pharmacy.

If your Vet Clinic is not willing to provide a script, know that there are Vet Clinics who do.

My Veterinary team at Redlands Veterinary Clinic are happy to support me in reducing my monthly medication costs for my elderly cat Twistie. I am saving nearly $45 per month on a daily medication that Twistie needs. I get issued a prescription (at a small fee) that I can have filled at my local Pharmacy.

πŸ’–πŸ˜» International Cat Day πŸ˜»πŸ’–

One of our favourite days here at REDVET as we honour our πŸˆβ€β¬›

Here are few facts you may not know about cats:

😻 Cats have very specific protein & amino acid requirements, & can’t be vegan. They are obligate carnivores & have very specific nutritional needs

😻 A cat will very rarely meow at another cat - this noise is typically reserved for humans!

😻 Cats are believed to be the only mammals that don’t taste sweetness. Occasionally a cat will like fruit or other sweet treats, but conversely, they are less prone to toxic substance ingestion than other mammals because they are more discriminate eaters!

Cat medicine is also very different to that of dogs, and it’s very important not to treat cats as small dogs. We absolutely love cats here at Redlands (Dr Kat especially, who has her membership in Feline Medicine), so feel free to comment or post below ⬇️ with any questions you have about this amazing species πŸ’–πŸ˜»

🌟 Officially HALF a vet 🌟

Congratulations Kasey on reaching this amazing milestone in your quest to become a veterinary surgeon πŸ₯

Kasey, who has been with us since she was a junior kennel hand in school, recently celebrated her cohort’s Half Way Dinner, an exciting time for all veterinary science students. This occasion marks the half way point of their long and intensive studies, a wonderful reason for a major celebration πŸŽ‰

Kasey currently nurses with us on weekends and holidays in between her heavy study and placement commitments. We are so proud of Kasey 🐾 and can’t wait to celebrate the rest of her journey with her. Well done Kasey πŸ€©πŸ«ΆπŸ»πŸ’–πŸΎ

Meet Beryl 🌟 who is doing so well after undergoing major surgery to have one of her leg’s amputated following a traumatic injury β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Beryl stayed with us in hospital last week, where she had surgery with one of our amazing in clinic surgeons, Dr T, who has extensive experience with wildlife and exotic patients. Dr T was supported in surgery by Nurse Chelsey and our team of surgical/hospital nurses and vets who monitored her closely throughout the procedure and recovery πŸ₯

Dr Gail was absolutely delighted to see her doing so well at her post operative check up this week. Beryl is making such a wonderful recovery and now back living her best life with her loving humans πŸ”

🐾 πŸ’– Meet the Team: Dr Valerie πŸ’– 🐾

Many of you will have met Dr Valerie, who we welcomed to REDVET in 2023.

Dr Valerie graduated from Murdoch University in 2007 and spent 10 years practicing in Singapore. She attained her membership in small animal internal medicine in 2016 and came to Brisbane in 2018, completing 2 medicine internships before settling back into general practice. Sammie the dog and Dasha the princess cat live with her, along with an impressive collection of indoor plants. In her free time, Valerie enjoys salsa dancing, pottery and bush walking.

We are so delighted to have Dr Valerie as part of our clinic family πŸ’™ With her keen interest in internal medicine, and a true dedication to her patients, she is an invaluable part of our team and a true asset to the veterinary industry. Thank you for choosing to join us Dr Val, we and our patients are so grateful for the amazing work you do πŸ’–

Now’s that’s a tooth 🦷 πŸ˜…πŸ¦·πŸΎ

Dr Sam after extracting a particularly tricky canine tooth, that was causing her patient significant pain and discomfort secondary to advanced gum disease 🦠

We are very lucky to have state of the art dental equipment here at the clinic, including a dedicated dental radiology system, Vet-Tome (an atraumatic dental extraction system), and best of all, very experienced veterinary surgeons and nurses who regularly perform major dental surgery 🦷

Dental disease is one of the most poorly managed conditions affecting our pets 😞 and this dental month, we are focusing on raising awareness about the importance of preventative dental health. As much as we love using our fancy equipment to perform major dental surgery, we would much rather help pet owners to prevent their pet’s mouths from getting to the point of needing major or full mouth extractions ‼️

Regular dental checks, dental chews/a focus on encouraging pets to chew and use their teeth from a young age, good diet and scheduled COHATs (complete oral health and treatment procedures) will all make a major difference to your pet’s oral health, quality of life, and life expectancy. To help, we offer FREE dental checks 7 days a week here in clinic 🐾 We can provide you with advice on how best to manage your pet’s dental health needs, generate estimates for any recommended treatments, and are also happy to provide advice based on estimates from other providers 🐾

Despite best efforts, thanks to a number of factors including genetics, accidents, age and lifestyle, dental disease can still happen 🦷 You can rest assured that if your pet does need dental surgery, they are in the best hands with our amazing team 🌟

We hope the tooth fairy 🧚 was good to Dr Sam’s patient 🌟🐾🦷

🌟 The year long injection for TICKS & FLEAS is here 🌟

We are very excited to now be offering this amazing product to our beautiful patients 🐾

This injection is given once per year and offers incredibly safe and effective protection against paralysis ticks, which are out in force in our community 😞

The injection is ideal for busy pet parents, patients who don’t necessarily enjoy visiting their vets more frequently than necessary, and for dogs who may be challenging to tablet or have skin sensitivities that make topical application of products challenging. Being an injectable product, it also uses three times less product/active ingredient then the comparable oral and topical products, making it suitable for dogs with other medical issues, or sensitivities to products πŸ’–

Pictured is gorgeous Hades who had his injection last week. This gentle giant is a complete teddy bear, but not that keen on having oral products administered. With the help of his emotional support crew (aka our team who absolutely adore him 🀣🌟), he received his quick and painless injection and now has peace of mind that he is covered against ticks (and doesn’t have to have any oral tablet administered!) for 12 months πŸ₯³

If you would like more info, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

If your pet has reached senior years at eight years of age and above, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for any symptoms of cognitive (mental) decline.

Symptoms of cognitive decline in pets can include changes in sleeping and waking patterns, the loss of learned behaviours (such as toilet training) or appearing vague or confused. 🐢🐱

If you notice any obvious behavioural changes in your pet, it’s a good idea to book them for prompt general health check-up with our veterinary team. Additionally, we can also make smart recommendations on proactive brain support measures for any senior pet. πŸ’ͺ

Last night Dr Bec and her family hosted their annual Christmas in July soirΓ©e, a fixture on the calendar for the REDVET Team β™₯️

The Campbell Family graciously include our team in their amazing family celebrations, events we all look forward to so much. The food, company, music, decor were all outstanding, and it was lovely to have the team together after such a busy few months in clinic.

Thank you so much to the Campbell Family for your generosity in hosting these wonderful events, we really appreciate it β™₯️

Last weekend, our Dr Steph had the pleasure of attending the Clinical Procedures & In House Pathology Workshop, held at the University of Queensland Gatton Veterinary School campus. What an incredible weekend!!

Dr Steph had the opportunity to learn about and practice advanced clinical diagnostic and treatment procedures, all of which will to help us manage the varied and complex medical and surgical cases we see here at REDVET πŸ’–

We are VERY excited about a few procedures in particular, which we hope to start implementing very quickly here in clinic. These include:

🌟 F***l microbiota transplantation
🌟 Joint taps and injections
🌟 Airway lavage and sampling
🌟 Contrast imaging and bladder/GIT studies
🌟 Bone marrow sampling
🌟Placement of long term feeding tubes

And so much more!!

We are very fortunate to have a very progressive and talented veterinary surgeon and nursing team, and we can’t wait to incorporate these enhanced skills in to our patient management plans.

Well done Dr Steph, we are thrilled you had such a great and productive experience with Vet Prac 🐾

πŸ’™πŸ’– Team Based Veterinary Care πŸ’–πŸ’™

Recently here at Redlands, we have begun transitioning towards a team based approach to veterinary care and services πŸ’–

Being such a big, busy and popular clinic, that is open 7 days a week, including public holidays, we need a large team to keep the wheels turning smoothly and efficiently.

We have always prided ourselves on a very personalised and high standard of patient care, so we are embracing a team based approach to ensure your pets receive consistent and gold standard care at every visit 🐾

Some of the changes we are making include:

🐾 Nurse consultations
🐾 Nurse admissions, discharges & updates
🐾 Consultation nurses who support our veterinarians
🐾 Twice daily team huddles to discuss every patient who has presented to the clinic in a day
🐾 Fortnightly nurse & client care team meetings
🐾 Fortnightly veterinary team meetings
🐾 Whippet Notes - a game changer - more to come!

We have an incredibly skilled team of veterinary professionals and client care representatives here at the clinic, and we are so excited about the opportunities this transition presents, not only for our team members but for our patients and the care they receive 🌟

Change can be scary but exciting thing, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions around this subject, and stay tuned for more updates. We can’t wait for you to meet more of our amazing team 🐾

Nothing makes our heart sing more than hearing from our patients once they have been discharged home πŸ’–

Bambi was critically unwell over the weekend and received intensive treatment in hospital πŸ’– Drs John & Kat and one of our very experienced nurses Nurse Jindi all commented that she was one of the sickest patients we had seen with her condition in quite some time πŸ₯Ή as they worked with her on Saturday. She had become unwell very rapidly, and thanks to her humans being so proactive, our team were able to start treatment in time to put her on the road to recovery.

Last night Bambi’s dropped off a beautiful platter of goodies for our amazing team and today we received this beautiful update:

β€œHi Redlands vets team. It’s Bambi here. Thank you so much for looking after me when I was sick. It’s so good to be home with my humans. They even got me a new bed and doggo toys. I miss you guys already but will be back to visit next week. Lots of love Bambi. 🐾

Ps. I hope you enjoy the treats that my humans bought you, they told me I have to get a job by next week to pay for my bills so if you need any cute models let me know. πŸ• β€œ

Thank you so much for the update Bambi, and let’s keep it to social visits for a little while hey πŸ˜‚πŸ€©πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•

04/07/2024

While many lumps in older pets are benign, some nastier types of lumps may spread or cause general health issues (known as malignant).

Fortunately, many malignant lumps can be cured if identified and treated early on. 🌟

If you notice a new lump on your pet, the best course of action is to have it promptly assessed by one of our knowledgeable vets. This usually involves a general check-up of your pet, as well as sampling of the lump for testing (which may involve either a simple needle sampling of the lump during consultation, or a recommendation on surgical biopsy options).
