Walking your dog in scorching heat can be extremely dangerous, particularly on concrete or bitumen, as these surfaces retain a lot of heat. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws—place your hand on the surface for 10 seconds; if it’s too hot to leave your hand there, please avoid walking your dog.

Overheated surfaces can burn your dog's paw pads, leading to pain, injury, or infection. Instead, schedule walks early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler, and choose grassy or shaded paths whenever possible. Always prioritize your dog’s safety and comfort during hot weather.

Caring for a dog with storm anxiety can make a big difference in how they cope during bad weather. Here are some helpful tips:

1. **Create a Safe Space**: Set up a cozy, quiet area where your dog feels secure. This could be a crate with a blanket over it or a room where the storm sounds are muffled.

2. **Use Calming Products**: Thunder jackets, Homeopet Storm Stress or Homeopet Anxiety can help ease anxiety. Consult your vet for recommendations.

3. **Distract and Comfort**: Keep your dog busy with their favorite toys, a puzzle feeder, or soothing music. Offer comfort, but try not to reinforce anxious behaviors by overreacting to their stress.

4. **Stick to Routine**: Dogs find comfort in consistency, so maintain normal routines as much as possible.

5. **Talk to Your Vet**: For severe anxiety, your vet may recommend a short-term medication during storms.

6. **Stay Calm**: Dogs pick up on your emotions. Stay calm and reassuring to help them feel safe.

By providing a combination of comfort, distraction, and routine, you can help your furry friend weather the storm more peacefully.

Call us at the clinic on 38216001 if you need help with your pet through this storm season.

Meet Georgie, a handsome young cat who was recently castrated. Castration is an important procedure for male cats, not only to prevent unwanted litters but also to reduce territorial behaviors like spraying and fighting. It helps keep your feline friend healthier and happier while contributing to the wellbeing of the wider cat community. If you haven’t yet had your male cat desexed, consider scheduling an appointment—it’s a simple step with lifelong benefits!

🚨 Urgent Alert: Parvo & Panleuk Outbreak in SEQ & Northern NSW! 🚨

There has been a rise in cases of canine parvovirus (parvo) and feline panleukopenia (panleuk) in Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast, Ipswich, and Northern NSW and AWLQ is calling on all pet owners to act quickly to protect their furry friends. Both diseases are highly contagious, potentially deadly, and costly to treat.

𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟵𝟬% 𝗳𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀, 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

😷 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea (often bloody)
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Fever

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.

🛑 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗦 𝗞𝗘𝗬!
- Make sure your pets are up-to-date on their vaccinations.
- Keep cats indoors to limit exposure, especially young or unvaccinated ones.
- If surrendering a pet, ensure they’ve been vaccinated 2 weeks before surrender.

⚠️ AWLQ Gold Coast Rehoming Centre is not accepting surrendered cats at this time due to the outbreak.

We are working on providing additional vaccination resources for the community—more details coming soon. For more info, visit our website or follow us on social media. Let’s work together to keep our pets safe! 🐾

ALERT ALERT ALERT.....

An outbreak of parvovirus has been confirmed in the Brisbane and Ipswich regions. Parvovirus has been confirmed on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands as well. Please make sure your dogs are up to date with their vaccinations to prevent your pet from contracting this horrible, preventable life threatening disease.

There are two distinct presentations of this disease. The cardiac form (uncommon) where the virus attacks the heart muscles leading to cardiac arrest, or the gastrointestinal form (very common) which causes bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy and wasting away.
Mortality rate hits 91% in unvaccinated/untreated cases. Puppies are more at risk of contracting parvovirus due to their minimised vaccination status and low immunity. Parvovirus is contracted via infected faeces so whether your dogs are out and about or not, they can get parvovirus by you bringing dog faeces home under your shoe.

If your dogs are not up to date with their vaccinations, please contact the clinic and we can get them back on track. We understand, especially at this time of year, vaccinations can be missed so we will endeavour to contact those who may have overlooked this. Don't delay. The outcome could be fatal 😳 Please share on all your social media pages to promote this awareness 🙏

Monty, age 9, recently visited the vet for his regular 6-month check-up. He has hyperthyroidism, which we monitor closely. His blood test results showed stable levels, so no medication changes were necessary. Monty, you're doing great! Keep it up, good boy!

If you ever have concerns about your pet’s health, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the clinic on 38216001.

Hyperthyroidism in dogs is rare, but when it happens, it can be managed with the right care. It usually comes from a small growth on the thyroid gland, causing it to make a bit too much hormone.

Dogs with hyperthyroidism may:
- Eat more but lose a little weight
- Have extra energy or seem restless
- Drink and go to the bathroom more often
- Occasionally have an upset tummy

Your vet can check hormone levels with a simple blood test. If needed, they’ll suggest options like medication, special diets, or a small surgery to help manage the condition.

Most dogs do well with treatment and live happy, comfortable lives. With regular vet check-ups, we can keep symptoms in check and make sure your dog stays healthy!

This is Rio who came in for signs of tick paralysis after he had been hiking. Unfortunately he had no prevention on. His owners originally thought he had been bitten on the eye from an ant. But he had no gag reflex, lethargic, not able to stand properly and his eyelid was paralysed. It was essential for the team to start tick antiserum immediately to give Rio a chance.

Tick prevention is essential for keeping your cat and dog healthy. Ticks have a nasty venom that causes paralysis and if left untreated can be fatal. Regular tick prevention protects your pet by repelling or killing ticks before they can attach and spread infection. Even if your pet primarily stays indoors, they’re still at risk, as ticks can latch on during outdoor activities or even be brought inside on clothing.

To help keep your pet safe, we’re offering a special promotion on tick prevention through the end of December. Stop by the clinic or give us a call for more information—let’s keep your pet healthy and tick-free all year round.

This is Bonnie, who came in with an aural hematoma. Each of your pet’s ear lobes, or pinnae, consists of two layers of skin held together by fibrous tissue, with nerves and blood vessels running between them. An aural hematoma, or blood blister, forms when one or more of these vessels rupture, causing blood to pool between the layers of skin. Bonnie was such a brave girl throughout her visit!

Raymond Price wasn't very happy upon waking up finding his two best friends were missing after being desexed 🙀

Raymond is a good boy but male cats have a tendency to spray urine all over the house and wander which can lead to fighting and protecting their territory. Cat fights can lead to abscesses and cause pain and open wounds which leads to much needed attention from your vet or even surgery. Desex your cat to stop these bad habits from developing.
