What a fantastic day with the Crows Nest Pony Club last Sunday! 🐴✨ Dr Alex had the pleasure of teaching the young riders how to properly bandage their horses' legs and hooves, as well as how to administer intramuscular vaccinations. It was a great opportunity to share some essential veterinary skills and help these future equestrians feel more confident in caring for their horses.

A big thank you to everyone who participated, and to the Crows Nest Pony Club for inviting us to be part of such an important learning experience! We’re proud to support the next generation of horse owners and riders. 🩺🐎

🌸🐾 Spring Alert! Toxic Plants for Pets 🐾🌸

As the flowers bloom, let’s keep our furry friends safe! Some common spring plants can be toxic to pets, so it’s important to know what to look out for. Here are a few toxic plants and the signs of poisoning:

Aloe Vera 🌿: Vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea.
Daffodil 🌼: Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, tremors.
Lilies 🌸: (extremely toxic to cats!) Vomiting, lethargy, kidney failure.
Oleander 🌺: Drooling, slow heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea.
Wisteria 🌿: Vomiting, diarrhea, depression.
Poinsettia 🎄: Drooling, vomiting, mild irritation.
Cycads 🌴: Vomiting, liver failure, bloody stools.

If your pet shows any of these symptoms, contact us immediately! Even a small amount can cause serious harm. Let’s enjoy the spring season while keeping our pets safe! 🌷🐕🐈

✨️ We're thrilled to share that Amanda Roughan recently joined Dr Tess Salmond and Dr Gemma Chuck on a panel at the Queensland Rural Press Club, diving into key issues for retaining vets in rural Australia.

In addition to the points below mentioned by Senator Susan McDonald, they discussed:
• The vital role of community support making new vets feel connected and welcomed to a rural community
• Highlighting the mental burden on vets who frequently have to justify their fees—a challenge often overlooked due to our subsidized healthcare system
• Recognizing vets' contributions to animal health, biosecurity, production and companion animal care
• The importance of well run veterinary businesses with positive workplace culture, good mentorship and business systems to provide a solid foundation for new vets to fall in love with their profession!

It was a great conversation about building a stronger future for our rural vet community! 💪🫶

Happy International Rural Women’s Day - Celebrating Rural Veterinarians.
Once again the Rural Press Club is doing an exceptional job in showcasing the real issues for rural and regional Queensland - today a focus on vets and the issues that need to be addressed, such as:
🟦 Regional childcare shortage (80% of vets under 40 are women)
🟦 Community support for students doing prac regionally (costs about $20,000 a year if they can’t get hosted by a family)
🟦 HECS debt support similar to that for Doctors and Nurses, and
🟦 Support so they don't burn out and leave the industry.
Great job on the hard hitting questions from Queensland Country Life editor Lucy Kinbacher and former ABC Country Hour presenter Airlie Felton Taylor - a wonderful wrap up 🙏
But at the end of the day it was agreed - this is a great, diverse and fulfilling profession.

🌟 Good News Story! 🌟

On Tuesday, Mossy was rushed into the clinic in a collapsed state just 30 minutes after being bitten by a brown snake. He was struggling to breathe, but thanks to the quick actions of Dr Emma, Dr Jamie-Lee, and our amazing nurse Nicole, Mossy was intubated, put on oxygen, and treated immediately.

We're happy to share that Mossy went home today with his loving owners, Abbie and Joseph! 🐶💚

🐍 Signs of a snake bite in pets:
- Sudden collapse followed by apparent ‘recovery’
- Lethargy
- Muscle weakness or tremors
- Inability to control bladder/bowels
- Irregular bleeding from the nose, bite site, mouth.
- Discoloured, dark urine (often bloody)

⚠️ What to do if you suspect a snake bite:
- Keep your pet as calm as possible
- Get them to us immediately—time is critical! (if possible, please phone us so we know you're coming)
- Avoid applying ice or a tourniquet

Stay safe this season, and remember, quick action saves lives! 🐾
