‼️ Reminder

As of July 1st 2022, Equestrian Australia has followed suit with FEI in 2021 with banning the trimming of sensory hairs on the muzzle and eyes. This ruling will be for every discipline under EA (Dressage, Eventing, Showmumping, Show Horse, Endurance, Vaulting and Driving)

“A horses sensory hairs may not be clipped and/or shaven or otherwise modified in anyway under penalty of elimination from the event. (Veterinarian may remove individual sensory hairs to prevent pain or discomfort and are exempt from ruling)”

“From July 1st 2022 horses found competing with them clipped, shaved, or otherwise modified will be issues a recorded warning.”

“From 1st January 2023 horses found competing with them clipped, shaved or modified will be eliminated from the event.”

More information can be found at the provided EA link below.

What are Sensory Hairs?
Horses have special tactile sensory hairs, known as their whiskers. The whiskers on a horse play an important role in their sensory awareness system. These amazing sensory hairs have their own nerve and blood supply and help horses navigate their surroundings.

More recently the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) has banned whisker trimming as of July 2021, with some British governing bodies following suit (British Dressage and British Eventing), as well as Equestrian Sports New Zealand.

Equestrian Australia has banned the trimming of sensory hairs effective from 1st July 2022.

Covid Update 25th May

**rallies and competitions update**

The Victorian Government has this morning announced further COVIDSafe measures across Greater Melbourne to help keep Victorians safe. These minor restrictions will come into effect from 6pm this evening:

. Masks must be worn indoors, unless exemptions apply
. Private gatherings in the home will be limited to five visitors per
day,
. Public gatherings will be limited to 30 people and
. Face masks will need to be worn indoors, unless an exemption
applies. The face mask requirement applies to everyone aged 12
years and older.

. Schools and workplaces will remain open with the current restrictions that are in place. Depending on the workplace, this includes COVIDSafe measures and in some cases, a density requirement. There are no changes to existing density rules.

. Victorians who live in Greater Melbourne and need to travel to
regional Victoria can still do so however, the restrictions travel
with them.

. Victorians visiting regional Victoria from Melbourne will also need
to wear a face mask when indoors even when outside of
metropolitan Melbourne, unless an exemption applies.

. Use of the Service Victoria QR code service will still be mandatory
at all venues and facilities required to have mandatory electronic
record keeping from Friday, 28 May.

At present, HRCAV rallies and events can continue. See our website to refresh your understanding of the COVIDSafe requirements.

As we learnt last year, things can change quickly so please stay informed.

Updates will be posted if further information is received.

Over Rugging, by our vet Lucy Carmichael

As temperatures drop, it’s tempting to reach for one of the rugs in our horse’s wardrobe. However, when we want to throw on the layers, doing the same for them may not be the right choice. There are significant differences in the way horses stay warm to the way that we do, for example:

• Unclipped horses already have a thick, hairy coat. This coat contains natural oils to repel water, and, if required, small muscles can contract, causing the hairs to stand on end (much like when we get goosebumps). This traps air between the hair and skin, providing an additional layer of insulation

• Horses have the benefit of a wider thermoneutral zone- for humans this is 25-35˚C, whereas the horse’s thermoneutral zone extends much lower, 5-25˚C. The thermoneutral zone is the temperature range at which an animal does not have to expend any energy to keep warm. This means that horses remain comfortable at significantly lower temperatures compared to us

• Where we have an appendix, horses have a caecum. The caecum acts as a ‘fermentation vat’, where bacteria break down feed and produce heat. Breakdown of forage generates the most heat. Therefore, a diet of low-calorie forage is far more effective for keeping your horse warm than putting on a rug

• Horses can efficiently divert their blood flow from the extremities to the internal organs, maintaining their core temperature. This is why their ears sometimes feel cold to touch, and it is important to see how warm they are by feeling inside the armpit or taking a re**al temperature (See our video on how to take your horse’s TPR here - https://youtu.be/_bug-U1-hMg)

• During movement, or even shivering, contraction of the large muscles of the body burns energy and releases heat

Over-rugging will affect your horse’s ability to regulate its body temperature and may cause significant distress if they get too hot. Extreme heat stress may result in dehydration, increased heart and respiratory rates, lethargy and even colic. There are long term implications too. When rugged, your horse will use less energy, and the excess will be converted to fat, predisposing them Equine Metabolic Syndrome and laminitis in the spring. Therefore, rather than rugging, providing appropriate shelter and ample forage are likely to be more effective ways of keeping your horse warm through the winter.

There are cases, of course, when rugging is appropriate- horses standing in, or those which are clipped will need a rug. However, numerous factors should be considered when choosing which type and weight, including the environment, type of shelter available and the weather. Remember that you are likely to be making this decision in the morning, when the temperature is probably several degrees cooler than it will be in the middle of the day.

Great news! We are so excited to see you all this weekend. Emails will be sent shortly to all competitors.

❗❗Following the government’s announcement today, the circuit breaker lockdown will end at 11:59PM tonight, Wednesday 17 February.

The key changes from pre-12 February restrictions to take note of are:

🔘 Face masks: Must be carried at all times. Mandatory when inside (except in a residential home) and outdoors when cannot maintain 1.5m physical distancing (unless a lawful exemption applies). Strongly recommended to wear when visitors attend your home.

🔘 Equestrian sport: Outdoors can resume with a density quotient of 1 per 2sqm. Indoors can resume with a density quotient of 1 per 4sqm. Record keeping is required and venues with capacity of greater than 500 patrons must publish a COVIDSafe Plan online. (see link below)

Arrangements for capacity over 1000 are determined on an individual basis under the Public Events Framework. (see link below)

Equestrian Victoria will update our COVIDSafe documents shortly in line with this announcement and the next COVIDSafe period.

It is still critical that we all comply with the COVIDSafe protocols and principles. Equestrian Victoria remains committed to looking after its members and the wider community by stopping the spread however this requires the co-operation and understanding of all of our community.

As restrictions continue to change we will keep you updated, however the six COVIDSafe principles continue to apply and should be at the forefront of your planning:

* Physical Distancing
* PPE (masks)
* Hygiene
* Record Keeping
* Enclosed spaces
* Work bubbles

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Matthew Brown - CEO Equestrian Victoria
