“No Big Deal”

There are all kinds of horse training traps that create tension and argument, and one of the most common is for the human to make too big a deal out of some perceived resistance or lack of responsiveness or, worse, some “disobedience” on the part of the horse.

This can take many forms. The horse seems a bit stuck about moving off the leg. Or he moves a step or two at the halt. Or the upward or downward transition isn’t smooth. Or he misses picking up the correct lead a couple of times. Or or or or, whatever.

The calm trainers, those who tend not to get triggered, will maybe make a couple of attempts at correction, but they won’t get obsessed to the point that they amp up the heat. They know, consciously or unconsciously, that changes happen over long periods of time, and that taking a horse to, and then beyond, its anxiety threshold is counter productive.

The good trainers have a sort of “no big deal” attitude about the litany of daily situations that are less than ideal. They are OK about it because they know that there are ALWAYS situations that are less than ideal, and that if they pick up on some of them and drill to fix them, instead of making it better, it will make the horse tight, nervous, and more resistant.

Having a “no big deal” reaction can be a learned response. And, sure, even the good trainers will sometimes step briefly across the line, but not often, not for long, and they will be quick to apologize to the horse by dialing the pressure down.

This doesn't mean that they will not readdress the problem at some later time, but they will sort of sneak up on it, get maybe a glimmer of improvement, then go on to something else.

🎅🎅 ARTISTE - Bates Dressage Saddle

Are you looking for that special once in a life time saddle for your perfect horse?

The Artiste is sublime, I personally was not a fan the very first time I sat in it. But after 15min I was hooked. The feel was amazing.

So, why am I selling it?
Because I brought a new one!! 💃 of course!! (To fit my very over sized warmblood mare). While I was still using this one for my lovely TB. Having two horses in work required 2 saddles - clearly!! 😆
I then sold the horse and this one has been sitting in the tack room waiting for me to let it go..

Practice Practice patience...

It's not always about the height of the fence! It's about the approach, the softness, and the confidence for both horses and riders.

I rode like S*^t while jumping. And she was not helping me in any way, shape, or form..

It's just one of those days!! Where things just don't come together...

I hate to say it but I have to agree...

However, the biggest thing I notice is the lack of education to build a grid (or related lines).

A distance between fences is very different if you are riding ponies or large horses Yes!!
And this is drilled into us..
However, the distance is also very different if you are jumping a line of poles on the ground, 60cm or the same line at 1.10m.

I have over the years run a few clinics on grid work and learning distances - They were not well received. Maybe it is time to re-look at this. ???

There are very few people that I would trust to set up a gymnastic line that had the correct distances so that the horse wouldn't jump in and get in trouble getting out.

So many riders, even many with years of experience, don't know about distances, and, even if they did, haven't developed an accurate stride by which to measure.

Which, when you think about it, is pretty pathetic----
