Black beauty, Wil Wheaten, came to see us recently to get a summer clip under sedation - doesn't he look cute with his little booties!? Did you know that we offer sedated cat clips - this is a hygiene groom under sedation which removes matts, and keeps long haired kitties cool in the summer heat.

As we start getting closer to Christmas feasting, 'tis the season for monitoring our pets around human food!

While including our pets in family occasions is nice, be careful not to feed your dog Christmas leftovers. Cooked and uncooked meat can lead to canine pancreatitis, and cooked bones can splinter and become a choking hazard. Avoid feeding your dog chocolate or Christmas pudding, as both have ingredients that are toxic to dogs.

Additional festive foods your pet should avoid include:

🚫Grapes, sultanas, raisins, and currants
🚫Cherry pits (and other stone fruit pits)
🚫Macadamias
🚫Corn cobs
🚫Avocado
🚫Alcohol
🚫Lollies & artificial sweeteners
🚫Salty foods (chips, pretzels, crackers, etc.)
🚫Cooked bones
🚫Chocolate
🚫Christmas pudding

Opt for dog-friendly treats if you’d like to indulge your furry friend.

With the Heatwave set to continue for the week do you know how to prevent and recognise heatstroke in your pet? If not, here's a little guide to help.

🌳 Make sure your pet has a cool, well ventilated area to escape the heat.
💧 Ensure there is plenty of drinking water out in accessible places for your pets. This should also be in a shady position to avoid it heating. Ice can be added to water to assist in keeping it cool.
🚷 Avoid walking and exercising/playing with your pet during the day. These activities should take place either in the early morning or in the evening once the temperature has cooled off.
🟦Providing cooling matts and collars can also assist in keeping your pet cool during the warmer months.

☀️Signs of Heatstroke in your pet☀️

🐕‍🦺 Panting: During hot days this is often used as a cooling method by animals, however this can also be a sign of distress and breathing can become noisy & heavier as heatstroke progresses.
🐈‍⬛ Drooling
🐕‍🦺Agitation, restlessness, pacing- continuously searching for cool areas to lie or water to drink.
🐈‍⬛ Vomiting or Diarrhoea
🐕‍🦺 Lethargy
🐈‍⬛ Wobblyness when walking
🐕‍🦺 Collapse
🐈‍⬛ Seizures

If your pet displays any of these signs immediately contact your vet or local animal emergency center for assistance. You can also begin actively cooling them by placing them in a cool environment, infront of a fan and sponging ROOM temperature water onto them.

🚩Never use cold or ice cold water for this as it can send your pet into shock.

On a night that's full of slithering, scary things, lets take a look at what to do if your pet is bitten by a snake.

With their natural curiosity and hunting instincts, it’s no surprise that our pets encounter snakes—especially during the warmer months when snakes are more active. Snake bites can be a serious threat to both dogs and cats, particularly if the snake is venomous. If your pet is bitten, it’s an ...

This week was Vet Nurse/ Vet Tech week and we'd like to make a HUGE shout out to our amazing nursing and support team.

This group of professionals are some of the first and last people your fur babies see when they come into the clinic and they are responsible for so much of your little ones care while here. Our nursing team are the people who admit and prepare your pet for surgery, run your pets anesthesia during the procedure, and then stay with them in recovery to ensure they wake up safely. They take your consult bookings, triage and prioritise our emergencies, provide nurse consults for various ailments, advise on topics such as nutrition, and parasite control, and check in with owners to make sure everything is going well post visit.

They maintain our equipment, ensure we have the correct stock and medications on the shelf, set-up and pack down our surgery, treatment and consult rooms, and make sure our clinic is clean and hygienic at all times.

And they do all this with a smile, a laugh, and a whole lot of passion.

Maddie, Larissa, Carly, Paris, Ellen, Rachel, and Sarah thank-you for being part of the Toowoomba Vet Team.
