Today’s post is inspired by the two new Bass we have in store.
Tank boss
Just like a workplace a tank always has a boss. Fish establish a hierarchy and any changes to fish inhabitants challenge that hierarchy.
You want a just but fair boss, take our Saratoga for example. She could eat most of the fish in the 8ft. But she doesn’t, but any new fish added (no matter the size) she lets them know just who is in charge.
Always keep an eye on new fish when they’re added to the tank. Chasing like our Toga is doing is normal, what you don’t want is excessive nipping or lip locking or biting. A little is okay, if there’s alot REMOVE the new fish.
We have added Oscar’s before that wouldn’t back down from the Saratoga so they were removed before she could kill them.
Remember keep an eye on new arrivals, chasing okay but not to much biting etc.
Ps it looks like the Peacock bass has been bitten in this video but that’s not the case.
Happy fish keeping all.
Anthony strongly dislikes carbon.
I’ve been asked a few times since putting the post up on chemical filtration on why I recommend Clear-Mix over activated carbon/charcoal.
It’s not a sales ploy, yes Clear-Mix is dearer but… you don’t have to replace it. Carbon you should be replacing monthly or at least every 6weeks. So we’ll actually make more money in the long run if you keep buying carbon, but don’t.
Clear-Mix does a much better job than carbon. Carbon is an indiscriminate scrubber, meaning it will remove good and bad things from your water chemistry.
Carbon also leaches phosphates, this usually causes algae blooms. Once it is exhausted carbon also leaches a lot of what it has absorbed back into the water column. When Clear-Mix is exhausted it just stops working it also doesn’t leach anything.
Clear-Mix also does a much superior job of filtering out smells, tannins and any discolouration in the aquarium.
Just remember Clear-Mix or carbon, if you’re treating your tank for anything, remove them both from your aquarium.
Happy fish keeping!!
Not really what happened… but don’t forget to get in and give that glass a good clean. DON’T use scourer pads, you’ll scratch the glass. A sponge or magnet cleaner will do the trick. Just don’t pick up gravel with them.
