Luke 😺 presented to us after the owner found him collapsed at home. We pulled a tick off and immediately started tick treatment. Unfortunately, like many tick patients, Luke deteriorated quickly and he couldn’t maintain his breathing effort 🫁

To give Luke the best chance of survival we started him on mechanical ventilation. This machine breathed for Luke, which allowed his body time to recover, while keeping his blood oxygen/carbon dioxide at the appropriate levels.

After 2 days he was able to come off the ventilator, but still needed extra oxygen and intensive nursing care for a few extra days. Luke stayed with us for 9 days before he was able to go home to his family, where they are continuing with his care. He is doing so well, and was such a brave boy 💙😻

Ticks are out and about and without appropriate tick prevention, treatment is expensive and invasive. Unfortunately it is also not always successful. It's crucial to know the signs 🐾🚨 Always use vet-recommended tick prevention to keep your furry friend safe and healthy! 🐕💪

1. Ataxia in the hind legs can be due to many issues including paralysis ticks, snake bite or ingestion of certain toxins. All of these conditions require veterinary intervention so the sooner you get your pet into the vet, the better their prognosis is 🐍 2. If your dog is taking a long time to cool down after exercise or a play it could mean they got too hot and are unable to cool themselves off. This is also why we don’t leave our pets in the car! Heat stroke is deadly, but it’s not as simple as just hosing them off to cool them down. You can supply a small pool on hot days, but if they are not calming down after about 15 minutes we need to see them as their internal organs start to become affected. 🔥 3. If you notice anything string like coming from your pets anus, it could indicate that they have eaten it and it has become anchored in their stomach/intestines. Alternatively if the string gets stuck around their tongue it can also cause intestinal problems as it tries to move the string through. This can cause intestinal blockage or linear foreign bodies. Spud thought the bait on the end of this fish hook looked too delicious to pass up 🪱🪱 His quick thinking owner held onto the string so that he couldn’t swallow it further, so we could extract it with the endoscope rather than requiring surgery. If you ever find yourself in this situation it is important to not pull on the string to remove the hook, as this could cause further damage.
