PREPARE FOR ISOLATION – WATCH AND ACT

Warning area: Cungulla, Saunders Beach and Gumlow

Tropical cyclone impacts likely to begin for Cungulla, Saunders Beach and Gumlow from Wednesday 24 January.
The rapidly forming low in the Coral Sea will form into a cyclone and is going to cause severe impacts through damaging winds, heavy rain and flooding.
The rapidly forming low may cause heavy rains and damaging winds for:
• Cungulla
• Saunders Beach
• Gumlow
The cyclone's projected path and intensity require swift and decisive preparedness actions.
Residents in these areas must be prepared for isolation. If residents are not prepared for isolation, they must be prepared to leave.
Voluntary evacuations are recommended for at-risk homes in Cungulla, Saunders Beach and Gumlow.
People who find it hard to move quickly should consider leaving now.

Impacts
• Roads could be blocked by fallen trees, powerlines or flood water from the cyclone.
• There will be lots of wind and rain from the cyclone. There will be flooding in low-lying areas.
• Power, water, phone and sewerage services could stop working.
EVACUATION PROCEDURES
Voluntary evacuations are in effect, targeting properties at risk. If you think your property is at risk of not withstanding a Category 2 Tropical Cyclone, then you should prepare to leave. Families are encouraged to seek shelter with relatives or utilise designated shelters/places of refuge.
If your home is not a safe place and you have no other options, there are evacuation centres open from 1pm on Wednesday 24 January at:

• Wills Street Evacuation Centre, Townsville City, QLD 4818
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO
• Decide now where you will go.
• If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust.
• Prepare your home
o Put chemicals and poisons up high to stop them polluting the water.
o Lift important things onto beds, benches, tables, high shelves or upstairs to protect them.
o Block toilets, sinks and drains with sandbags to stop sewerage backflow if you can.
o Empty and turn off fridges and freezers.
o Move cars not being used to high ground away from trees.
• Pack an emergency kit
o battery-powered radio to listen to warnings
o torch and spare batteries
o tinned and packet food and bottled water to last five days
o enough clothes for five days
o important medicine, important papers (like ID, insurance papers and passports)
o first-aid kit
o mobile phone, charger and charged power bank
o toilet paper, face masks and hand sanitiser
o if you have very young children, enough nappies for up to five days, wipes, bottles, formula or baby food. Plan to not have a fridge or microwave
o if you have a pet, enough pet food for five days, a lead and/or crate.
If you find it hard to move quickly or have special or medical needs
• Leaving now is the safest option. Call your support person or service to take you to safety.
• If anyone in your house uses powered medical equipment, like a dialysis machine or ventilator, go now to a safe place with a reliable power supply, like a generator.
If you are a tourist or visitor, camper or caravanner
• Pack up now and leave the area. It will soon be too late to leave. Leaving now is the safest option.
• Travel out of the warning area. Check road conditions and plan your route before you leave.
• Stay informed by listening to local radio stations.
