🐹Happy Saturday Everyone🐹

As it’s beginning to heat up & come into our hottest months of the year. I just want to remind everyone to ensure they’re piggy’s have access to shade & air flow all day - this will help keep them comfortable & cool. Also if your home during the middle of the day sometimes it’s nice to feed your piggy’s some cool watermelon, cucumber or tomato from the fridge. 🥒

❤️🐹 Guinea Pig Announcement 🐹❤️

Hello everyone, I just wanted to update everyone who follow’s my page. My life has taken a different course in the past couple of months & so my Guinea Pig Business is also changing. ☺️

I will be continuing to accept surrendered guinea pigs from people/families who can no longer keep or care for them. I will also always accept any guinea pigs families have bought off me.
I will continue responsibly breeding my guinea pigs - however I will only have short haired breeds moving forward. ☺️

I may still offer pampers, you’ll need to message me and I will check my dates as I am anticipating I will be away on & off a lot in the coming months. ☺️

Sitting I will not be doing regularly anymore, your still welcome to contact me with dates as I might be able to help here & there for short stays, but it is very unlikely I will be taking any bookings exceeding a week. ☺️

I will NOT be taking guinea pig sitting booking’s over Christmas Holidays (December-January) this year. I will be spending time away on & off. I will also be working a 10hr a day job a few days each week. Previously i’ve been a full time stay at home mum so during our hottest months i’ve been able to check hourly on families piggy’s who stayed with me & ensure they’re safety throughout each day.

I don’t want to run the risk of anything bad happening when i’m not home which is why i’ve made this decision. I understand it may/will be a huge inconvenience to some families and I am very sorry for that, but i’m writing this now to give you as much notice as possible to arrange other plans.☺️

Kindest Regards,
Guinea Pig Gardens 🐹❤️

Ear wax is something you definitely don’t hear about when you choose guinea pigs as pets. But ALOT of guinea pigs develop it over time. Unless the ears are checked every 2-3 months wax can build up, it can then become a comfortable home for parasites & bacteria. Which is very uncomfortable for your guinea pigs. 🐹

Long haired guinea pigs such as Sheba’s, Shelti’s, Texel’s, Alpaca’s, Curly Sheba’s & Coronets all have a higher chance of developing ear wax. So it’s always a good idea to trim the ear hair & clean the ear’s regularly.

Ear wax doesn’t only build up on the inside of the ear but on the outside as well.

I use cotton buds with coconut oil & I find that the wax just slips right off. ☺️

🐹Did you know guinea pigs are very social animals. They love to have space to popcorn & run around. This is great for they’re well being & health. Grass is great for digestion & they’re paws. Fresh veggies are a wonderful way for your piggies to absorb nutrients which keep them healthy & happy. The healthier your piggies are the longer they’ll live & the more we can love them.💞🐹

🐹Don’t forget though, if you want a herd of more than 3 piggies I’d definitely recommend getting sow’s (males can become extremely territorial). Also the more guinea pigs you have the more room they will need to live comfortably.🐹

🐹What Chaff/Pellet’s to feed your Guinea Pig🐹

*Disclaimer - This is MY opinion - based off what I know guinea pigs diet should consist of. I am not telling you to only buy expensive food for your pets but just letting you know what the best options are for your guinea pigs health*

🐹Bunny Nature🐹

Today I will be talking about Bunny Nature - Nature Shuttle & Guinea Pig Dream Under 5 Months & Over 5 Months.

This guinea pig pellet/mix is FREE from preservatives, flavour enhancer’s, added flavours, colours & sugar. This brand is German & aims to guinea pigs return to a naturally/species appropriate diet.

You initially start your guinea pigs (if over 5Months of age) on Nature Shuttle - once they are eating all of it out of a bowl before topping it up you can transition them onto Guinea Pig Dream.

If they are under 5 months of age you can start them on the Under 5 months Guinea Pig Dream.

I’m incredibly impressed too by the ingredients list on this packaging. The ingredients are from natural plants & far exceed the ingredients on the other pellets i’ve reviewed. Timothy hay, meadow fescue & foxtail, german ryegrass, blue grass, dandelion leaves, meadow sweet, sweet pepper & maca root are just some.

They also include a list of Analytical Constitutes which include crude protein, fats, oils, fibre ect. And also Nutritional Additives such as Vitamin C, Copper, Iron & Magnesium.

They also state on the packaging that some plants from where guinea pigs originate from are included. All ingredients are correctly dosed. The pellets themselves are quite large, it looks like 3 pellets together. This is purposely designed for tooth abrasion.

This brand of guinea pig food can be purchased on the Guinea Pigs Australia website. Nature Shuttle is usually $23 & Guinea Pig Dream (Pup & Adult) is $37. But they do come on sale from time to time which is when I bought mine. 😁 For what your getting though I think that’s a bargain, especially if your guinea pigs end up loving it!

It is different to any other guinea pig chaff/pellet i’ve tried. Some of my guinea pigs really enjoy it & other’s not so much. I would highly recommend giving it a try for your piggy’s though, nutritionally I personally believe this is the best on the market i’ve found. You can go on the Guinea Pigs Australia website for a read & they also do treats for guinea pigs! I’ll make another post for that.

Once again, this is my opinion & my experience with this brand of food. Please do your own research & see what you think. Kindest regards, Guinea Pig Gardens 💗🐹☺️

🐹Oxbow Animal Health Essentials Pellets🐹

Today I will be talking about the popular brand of Oxbow Pellets.

These pellet’s are intended to be 70% Timothy Grass Meal, 20% fortified foods, 8% greens & 2% treats.

The main ingredients are Timothy grass hay, soybean hulls, soybean meal, wheat middlings, cane molasses, sodium bentonite & a lot of different vitamins/minerals once again.

This pellet is to aid digestion for your piggy’s as well as support the bodies health by delivering 100% the daily recommended intake of vitamins & minerals. This is also a product of the USA.

I know of a lot of Cavy Stud’s who use this pellet in particular for they’re guinea pigs. As it has high quality ingredients & is easy to source from pet shops. It is $40 a bag & is the top end brand of pellet you can buy for your guinea pigs.

My experience with this brand of pellet is neutral. I have nothing negative to say about it, the guinea pigs i’ve sat who live off this always seem to be in great health. It is expensive but you could always swap between this & Cavy Origins or a different chaff/pellet to give your piggy’s some variety if you wish.

Once again this is 100% my opinion & experience. ☺️🐹💗

🐹Cavy Origin’s🐹

Today I will be talking about Cavy Origin’s Completely Balanced Diet.

This brand of guinea pig pellet was formulated by veterinarian’s with the intention of being 75% high fibre hay, 20% pellets & 5% veg/fruit (Vitamin C). The ingredients used are also from Australian farms which is great - we LOVE Australian made.

The ingredients are fescue, lucerne, oat fibre, wheat, soybean, vegetable oil & a whole lot of vitamins/minerals.

This produce is advertised to have very high Vitamin C content to reduce/eliminate the possibility of guinea pigs developing Scurvy. However, if your feeding your guinea pigs high vitamin C fruit/veggies regularly their is no need to put your guinea pigs on a high Vitamin C pellet full time. I would recommend switching it up with other guinea pig pellet/chaff’s as well. Everything in moderation- you can have too much of a good thing.

I’ve sat guinea pigs who live off this food alone & a common theme I have found is that they’re p**ps are quite soft & clump together. Boar’s in particular I find seem to get a lot of p**p stuck in their boar sac which can lead to compaction & then the a**s muscles no longer being able to work.

Once again this is MY OPINION & MY EXPERIENCE’S - You ultimately know your guinea pig best & if your guinea pig has had no issues than you certainly don’t need to change a thing. I’m just sharing this to help educate people & it comes from a good place. 💗🐹☺️

🐹What Chaff/Pellet’s to feed your Guinea Pig🐹

*Disclaimer - This is MY opinion - based off what I know guinea pigs diet should consist of. I am not telling you to only buy expensive food. I know off people who feed this to they’re guinea pigs and haven’t had issues. All guinea pigs genetics are different. Some can tolerate more sugar/calcium than others. Although it is good to be aware that issues COULD stem from cheap food choices*

For new or experienced guinea pig owners it can be tricky to know what pellet/chaff mix is best to feed your piggy’s when there are so many different choices. I hope this post can help you out. ☺️

To start off with I would recommend avoiding any boxes/packets of small animal food from Coles or Woolworths. Peter’s Alfalfa & Fruit in particular is not something you’d want to be feeding your guinea pigs. This mix has next to no nutritional value in the chaff or the pellets, plus dried fruit is horrible for your guinea pigs as the very high levels of sugar long term will only negatively impact your pet’s health.

A lot of these ingredients are not natural & have artificial colours added. These packaged foods include canola, lentils, oat’s, barley, soya, dried fruit, lucerne & more ingredients that are not healthy for guinea pigs.

Lucerne is a rough type of hay that is very high in calcium. This type of hay is good for guinea pigs under the age of 8months but if you feed adult guinea pigs this hay regularly, they can develop bladder stones which are very painful. Although this can be fixed by surgery from a vet, it’s a lot better to avoid this.

Ofcourse like most things the cheaper it is to buy, the lesser the quality. Petbarn is a good example as they have cheap pellets for $14 or expensive Oxbow pellets which are $40. It all depends how much your willing to invest in your fur babies health. Obviously the better quality food the better quality they’re health & life will be. I am fully aware that life in general is expensive right now & this certainly plays a part.

Once again I am only shedding a light on this, I am not trying to shame or force anyone to feed they’re pets something they don’t want to. This is coming from a good place & I will be following this post up with chaff/pellets I’d recommend to feed your piggy’s. 🐹☺️

Did you know that guinea pigs don’t blink like us to clean they’re eyes? 😋

You may notice sometimes after bathing your guinea pig that they might look like the piggy below. This white discharge works as a cleaning fluid & sometimes collects in the corner of they’re eye as it can’t always drain through the tear duct. This is very normal & nothing to be concerned about.🐹

⛄️Guinea Pig Care During Winter⛄️

Guinea Pig’s generally live comfortably between 16 - 26 degrees. Now it’s getting cooler there are some things we can do to keep them warm & happy.

We can move outdoor hutches to a part of the yard where it doesn’t get too much wind. You can buy water bottle covers or hutch covers to help stop them from being really cold.

In Summer we love to give our piggy’s cold veggies from the fridge. During Winter it might be nice to leave the veggies out of the fridge to remove the chill off them before feeding them to your guinea pigs.

You can also bring your guinea pig’s indoor’s to keep them warmer as well a purchase some fleece tunnels, sacks or cuddle cups you can turn upside down. To add into they’re cage. Your piggy’s will love snuggling up in these. ☺️

Good afternoon everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic Easter. I’ve been sitting some piggy’s over the holiday’s which is so lovely. ☺️

I just wanted to let you know now is a great time to check your guinea pigs nails & give them a trim if they need it. If guinea pigs nails are left untouched the nails or even the toes can begin to curl. This can become painful & make life uncomfortable for your pet guinea pigs. I like to check my piggy’s nail’s every 2-3 months & take the tips off. ☺️

I am offering ‘pampers’, so if you’d like to bring you guinea pig/s to me for this service. Please send me a message with how many piggy’s you’d like pampers & when you’d like to have them booked in. ☺️

Sow’s - $10 each - Bath, ear wax clean, nail trim, Maleseb bath, lice/mite/mange treatment.

Boar’s - $15 each - Bath, ear wax clean, bail trim, Maleseb bath, lice/mite/mange treatment, boar sac clean & grease gland clean.

For long haired breeds of guinea pigs to also have a good hair cut will be an additional $5. ☺️

I hope you have a wonderful wheek!

🐹 Texel Guinea Pigs 🐹

Texel guinea pigs are an increasingly popular breed that originated in England from crossing a Rex with a Sheltie guinea pig. This is how they obtained they’re long wavy hair. Although the hair on they’re body will constantly grow, the hair on they’re face will not. They come in many colours. 🐹

Merino is a very similar breed only they have a crest on they’re forehead. It is believed this breed came about from crossing a Rex with a Coronet guinea pig. This breed requires the same attention as that of a Texel. 🐹

Both of these are long haired breed’s so they DO require more time & maintenance. If you choose to grow your Merino/Texel’s hair you should be brushing it at least once a day & keeping the hair trimmed around the ears, eyes, along the stomach & ge****ls. This prevent’s p**ps, hay or urine from matting the hair. Ear wax will also build up a lot quicker so I would recommend keeping the ear hair trimmed & cleaning the ears with a cotton bud & coconut oil every 3 months. 🐹 Trimming the hair around the eyes is also very important.

These breed’s are very susceptible to heat stroke in hotter climates. I would highly recommend that these piggy’s are kept indoors for 80% of the year unless you live in a cold climate or are able to closely monitor them. ☺️

I personally absolutely adore this breed, it is by far my favourite. I have found this breed is one of the most trusting, confident & affectionate. Don’t get me wrong, each guinea pig has it’s individual personality & genetics. So that will play a part in each of them, as well as how much time you spend with them. But overall these are fantastic breed’s & I would recommend them for anyone who has the time to put into taking care of them as you will be greatly rewarded with they’re love & trust. 🥰🐹

Here are some photos of my Texel & Merino piggy’s below as well as a few i’ve previously bred.🐹

🐹Breeding Guinea Pigs🐹

I’d like to share this information as i’ve had a LOT of people contacting me wanting to buy both genders of guinea pigs recently who either don’t care or are not doing any research first. Assuming these are ‘easy’ animals to breed. If you would like to know more about this subject please keep reading.☺️🐹

Firstly, guinea pigs are wonderful pets & having pups is lovely. At first it can be easy keeping a male & female in the same cage/hutch. BUT once the female is halfway along in her pregnancy she will need her own space seperate from the male. You will need to feed her regularly (chaff/pellets/hay/veggies) to ensure she has a healthy pregnancy & can have healthy, chubby pups.

She will need to stay seperate from any males in this cage/hutch until she has had the pups & at least until 6 weeks post birth. Once the pups are 1 week old it is a really good idea to correctly s*x them. If not before than by 3 weeks you will need to remove any male pups so they cannot get their mother/sisters pregnant. Male guinea pigs can s*xually mature before 3 weeks so you need to keep an eye on them everyday. It is good to keep written down who is bred with who. You also should NOT breed siblings together or with their parents.

Now for example you can keep the Dad & male pup living together in 1 cage. The Mum & a female pup can live in the other cage. This is fine as you have 2 same s*x pairs. ☺️

If you continue to breed you will require more room, more cages/hutches, accessories & food. This is where it can get expensive.

It is also very time consuming to clean cages everyday or move hutches around a yard, feeding/watering them twice a day too. Especially as the seasons change or if you have a job.

If you keep more than 2 male guinea pigs together, once they mature around 4months you may need to seperate them. They may get territorial & fight often. This is where it get’s complicated. Male guinea pigs bonds will break if they are used for breeding or live with/around females. Then you may need to house all your boar’s individually.

If you’ve never had guinea pigs as pets & have not researched anything about them….PLEASE do some research & start off with a SAME S*X PAIR. You will have a beautiful bond between them, they will make amazing pets, they are not too time consuming to care for & are more affordable. 🐹🐹

If you’d still like to breed then please educate yourself first & have as much information as possible so you know what to expect. Most importantly, so you can keep all your guinea pigs in great health. I am a breeder & am happy for people to also breed - I certainly cannot & will not stop you.

But what I do ask is that you google & research breeding guinea pigs for yourself first. I’ve had people message me who claim to be completely unaware that they will have pups if they keep a male & female together.🥴

I’m not trying to come across as judgemental or rude. I’m just hoping to educate & open some people’s eyes. 🙏🐹

🐹Rex Guinea Pigs 🐹

Rex guinea pigs originated in South America & have a very unique coat. It is short, wiry & can appear wavy when they are young. It is an unusual texture as most guinea pigs are soft to touch. They’re fur lacks guard hairs, these are longer hairs that are surrounded by short hairs. These hairs help to make the Rex guinea pigs coat more water resistant. It is a genetic mutation that many different mammals have. ☺️

These piggy’s come in a variety of colours as most do & grow to be around 25cm in length. They can live to be around 6years of age depending how they are cared for. You don’t need to trim this breeds hair but you will need to clean they’re ears for wax & trim they’re nails regularly. Ear wax may accumulate quicker in this breed due to the wiry hairs that grow in & around the ear so it is very important you check this every month or so. ☺️

This breed is described to be social, friendly & affectionate which is certainly not hard to believe. Though how they are raised & how you treat them will also shape the piggy’s they grow up to be. ☺️

Here are some photos of Rex’s below that i’ve bred & 1 who was surrendered to me.

Good afternoon everyone, I’ve recently had some surrenders who have had over grown nails. Usually a good indication to when they need a clip is when they are really sharp or when the nails/toes begin to curl. 🐹

When the toes begin to curl is can be very painful & the guinea pigs are putting more pressure on different parts of the paw.

I completely understand it can be very daunting & nerve wracking when it comes to clipping your piggy’s nails. Clear/white nails are much easier to trim than black nails as you can see the quick (a blood vessel that runs through the nail). You ideally want to clip just below where the quick ends. ☺️

You can certainly watch youtube videos on how to do it yourself or I am more than happy to do it for you. I can only clip your piggy’s nails or I can give your guinea pigs a full pamper. Feel free to message me for more information. 🐹☺️

🐹These two boars are my latest surrenders. They were very loved & well cared for as they are big & healthy. They have been bathed in Malaseb, treated topically with Ivermectin, nails clipped & boar cleaned. Once I quarantine them they will be seeking a new forever home.🐹

🐹Sheba Mini Yak Guinea Pigs🐹

A fun fact about this breed of guinea pig is that it originated in Australia. A cross between a Peruvian & an Abyssinian Guinea Pig. 🇦🇺

Sheba Guinea Pigs live to be between 4-8 years old & you can get them in most colours. They are similar to the Abyssinian’s as they have rosettes all over their bodies, the difference is that the Sheba’s hair will grow to be very long. This also means that before you buy a pair, to really make sure you can commit to the care & maintenance these piggy’s require. ☺️

Some Sheba guinea pigs hair can grow up to 1.5cm a month, so to keep the hair nice you’ll need to brush it regularly. In the hotter months I personally cut a lot of their coat off, and I always keep the hair along the stomach & ge****ls cut short to avoid matting. I also recommend checking the ears for wax every 2 months, the long hair in & around the ear can encourage build up. You can clean this using a cotton bud & some coconut oil to very gently clean the inside of the ear. With males you will need to perform boar cleaning as they’re long hair can get caught in the perineal sac or around the w***y. ☺️

All guinea pigs are highly social & this breed is no different. They are gentle & curious but can also be skittish (this comes back to how much you handle them). They can be very playful, affectionate & look absolutely magnificent when they have their full coat & are very well cared for. ☺️
