Let’s talk about foraging!

In the wild, a bird spends about 80% of their time looking for food and eating, and 20% in other activities such as grooming and flock activities. When we provide all the food in bowl, this is often reversed and the bird has to find other things to fill their time. Unfortunately a lot of the time it is negative behaviours we see, such as screaming, self mutilation and feather plucking.
Foraging is fantastic for a birds mental health. It provides natural mental stimulation to relieve boredom and can help to reduce behavioural problems such as screaming, feather plucking and destructiveness.
It can be as simple as a foraging tray and hiding the food in it, not just food but fun items to play with and destroy. You can also purchase foraging commercial equipment such as baffle cages and puzzle feeders.
Harry has a simple cardboard box with hay, pellets seeds nuts and toys mixed in for him to explore and eat!

Our live food shipment has arrived! We have lots of Vitaworms available now aka Black Soldier Fly Larvae, as well as favourites like crickets and woodies, and of course mealworms.

BSFL is a fantastic live food for bearded dragons, blue tongue lizards, geckos, turtles and other reptiles, chickens, ducks and other poultry, and even fish!

They contain high levels of Calcium. They have a balanced ratio of Calcium-phosphorus makes them ideal for all types of reptiles!

Let's talk UVB for Bearded Dragons!!
Ultraviolet B lighting is an essential in reptile keeping. UVB is vital to dragons; in fact these wavelengths of light are necessary for the body to manufacture vitamin D3 which is required for proper calcium absorption. Without UVB lighting, they can't obtain the calcium they need which results in a number of health issues such as Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) which involves their body taking the calcium from their bones to use it elsewhere.
Ensuring you are using the correct UVB lighting is tremendously important, as each reptile has unique requirements and there is a variety of different bulbs available. Bearded Dragons for example, should have a T5 linear UVB tube in either the 12% or 14% depending on where it is fitted. The coil type bulbs are insufficient for Beardies as they have a focused spot of output and deteriorate significantly faster. In order for your dragon to obtain the UVB they need they would have to be directly under the bulb, which interferes with their natural instinct to move in order to regulate their temperature.
All UVB lights have a lifespan; coils need to be replaced every 6 months, whereas T5 tubes need to be replaced each year. This is because they stop emmiting those wavelengths of light after that period of time. Just because the light is on, does not mean it is emmiting what it needs to.

Budgies!

Did you know budgies are a very social animal and do better in pairs or groups in aviary situations? If your budgie is left alone for long periods of time, consider getting a friend for him. They don't need to be in the same cage, but someone to talk to is very beneficial for their happiness. A happy budgie is a healthy budgie. Their happy nature, mischievous and often hilarious antics have made budgies one of the most popular pets in the world, second (or third) to dogs and cats. They are also highly intelligent, which makes them very trainable and great companion animals. If you want to take them for walks with you you can even get harnesses to keep them safe! They enjoy eating greens, getting wet, exploring and having a good twitter. They love shredding toys and we have lots of suitable toys available for them.
