Just a quick PSA to please be careful when exercising your dogs in this hot weather!
I have seen a lot of posts in community pages about being careful to avoid burnt paws. I have never seen paws burnt from walking on bitumen. That's not to say it doesn't happen but that it is not as common as the real threat that routinely kills dogs, heat stroke.
Please have a look at the pictures (sourced from Vets Now - a UK pet emergency service) and familarise yourself with the signs of heat stroke. Avoid making or letting your dog exert themselves in hot weather. If your dog is overweight, brachycephalic or has certain health conditions (such as laryngeal paralysis), exercise even greater caution.
Heat stroke isn't always just a case of we cool the dog down and they're fine. High body temperatures can result in multiple organ failure and death. It's not even technically summer yet and this has already been occurring. It is absolutely heart breaking for the dogs and for the owners who are often well intentioned loving pet owners just trying to enjoy the outdoors with their dog.
If your dog is showing signs of heat stroke, begin active cooling immediately by wetting them with a hose and then place them in the air conditioned car while you transport them to your nearest emergency vet for triage.
