Rio Update!

Pets can be so curious (and sometimes a little too adventurous!). Rio’s owners did the right thing by bringing him to see us when he wasn’t feeling well, and we’re glad we could help him get back on track.

Thank you to everyone who joined in and shared their guesses—the correct answer is B: A rock!🪨

We’re so glad to see Rio back to his playful self after successful surgery. Thanks to his owners for trusting us to care for him!

If your pet is acting out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team for advice or a check-up. 🐾

P.S. Our General Practice currently has a promotion of 10% off your general consult. Book in today!

Can you guess what Rio Swallowed?

Rio, an 11-month-old Border Collie, wasn’t feeling his best. For 10 days, he hadn’t been eating well and was occasionally vomiting. Concerned, his owners brought him to our general practice team. After some X-rays, we discovered a surprising culprit behind Rio’s troubles.

Can you guess what he swallowed?
🦴 A. Dog toy
🪨 B. Rock
🍖 C. Bone
🛠️ D. Piece of metal

Drop your guess in the comments below before we reveal the answer!

Prepare Your Pets for New Year’s Eve Fireworks!

While fireworks are a symbol of celebration and fresh starts for us, for our pets, they can feel like terrifying explosions.

Unfortunately, more pets go missing on New Year’s Eve than almost any other night of the year.
At JCUVet, we see a surge of lost pets during this period—some frightened, others severely injured.

Don’t let your pet become part of this statistic. Take time to prepare your home and your furry friend for the fireworks:

1️⃣ Keep Pets Indoors– Create a secure, quiet space with their favorite bedding and toys.
2️⃣ Reduce Noise– Close windows, curtains, and doors. Play soft music or the TV to mask sounds.
3️⃣ Update ID– Ensure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are current in case they escape.
4️⃣ Exercise Early– Walk or play with your pet during the day to help them relax at night.

JCUVet Emergency and Critical Care remains open 24/7, 365 days a year.

If your pet needs urgent care, call us at 07 4781 3600.

Help your pets feel safe this New Year’s Eve—let’s start the year on the right paw! 🐾🎉

Holiday Foods to Keep Away from Pets!

The festive season is full of delicious treats, but some of our favorite holiday foods can be dangerous for pets. Keep your furry friends safe by avoiding these toxic foods:

🚫 Chocolate: Even small amounts can be harmful, causing vomiting, diarrhea, or serious health issues.
🚫 Raisins & Grapes: Found in mince pies and other festive desserts, these can cause kidney failure in dogs—keep them far away!
🚫 Onions & Garlic: Common in holiday dishes, these can damage your pet's red blood cells and cause anemia.
🚫 Xylitol: Found in sugar-free candies, baked goods, and gum, this sweetener is extremely toxic, even in tiny amounts.
🚫 Christmas Ham & Fatty Foods: High-fat foods like ham can lead to pancreatitis, a serious and painful condition for pets.

Remember: Store these foods securely, and remind guests not to feed your pets any scraps or treats.

If your pet gets into trouble this holiday season, JCUVet is open 24/7 for emergencies. 🐕🐾

Stray Animal Management During Storm and Festive Season.

With storm season and the festive season approaching, JCUVet and surrounding vet clinics have seen an increase in stray animals being brought in.

Please note that Townsville City Council is responsible for stray animal management, and JCUVet cannot accept healthy strays due to limited capacity during this time.
We can only take in strays that are injured or in need of urgent medical care as we remain open as an Emergency and Critical Care hospital 24/7.

Here’s What to Do If You Find a Stray:

1️⃣ Secure the Animal – Offer water and keep it safe, calm, and separate from other pets.

2️⃣ Search for the Owner – Knock on nearby doors (if safe) and post in local Facebook groups like Townsville Lost and Found Pets or Save a Stray Townsville.

3️⃣ Contact Townsville City Council– Call 13 48 10 to arrange collection. Their Animal Care Centre is open daily (except Sundays & public holidays) from 9:30 AM - 3:30 Pm and offers a home collection service.

4️⃣ If the Animal Is Injured, call JCUVet on 07 4781 3600 before coming in or if you have any questions.

We appreciate your understanding and help in managing stray animals during this busy time. Thank you for caring for our community’s animals—stay safe and take care!

Fledgling Season

It’s fledgling season, and we’ve noticed an influx of baby birds being brought into our care by well-meaning individuals who believe they need rescuing. While your compassion is admirable, the good news is that most of these young birds don’t actually need help.

Fledglings are young birds that have left the nest and are learning the skills they need to thrive—like flying and foraging. They may look vulnerable as they hop around on the ground, but this is a normal and vital part of their development. Their parents are usually close by, keeping a watchful eye on them, even if you can’t see them.

When does a baby bird need help?
-It’s visibly injured (e.g., bleeding, struggling to move, or has obvious signs of trauma).
-It’s in immediate danger (e.g., near predators, stuck in a dangerous spot, or unable to escape harm).
-It’s a nestling (featherless or only partially feathered) that has fallen from the nest.

If you find a fledgling:
-Observe: Watch from a distance. Parents are often nearby, providing care.
-Protect: If the fledgling is in a dangerous area (e.g., a road or open space), you can gently move it to a safer spot nearby.
- Resist intervention: Unless the bird is injured or at risk, it’s best to let nature take its course.

By understanding the difference between fledglings and nestlings, and when intervention is necessary, you can help young birds grow and thrive in their natural environment.

If you’re ever unsure about what to do, don’t hesitate to contact JCUVet for advice.

⛈️Caring for Stray Animals During Stormy Weather! ⛈️

With the upcoming storm season, we understand that more stray animals may be found.

While we love helping our community, please remember that taking in strays can put additional pressure on our Emergency and Critical Care team and increase stress for our sick and recovering patients.

Here’s What to Do If You Find a Stray to reduce the stress on our emergency vet services.

1. Secure the Animal– Offer water and keep it safe, calm and separate from other pets.

2. Search for the Owner– Knock on nearby doors (if safe) and post in local Facebook groups like Townsville Lost and Found Pets, Save a Stray Townsville.

3. Contact Townsville City Council– Call 13 48 10 to arrange collection. Their Animal Care Centre is open daily (except Sundays & public holidays) from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM and offers a home collection service.

If the Animal Is Injured– Take it to your regular vet. If closed, call JCUVet on 07 4781 3600 before coming in or if you have any questions.
JCUVet have reached capacity for strays unless they are injured strays, pets or wildlife.

Thank you for caring for our community’s animals—stay safe and take care!

Say Hi to Nikki– Our New Specialist Nurse Trainer!

Nikki brings over 10 years of experience as a vet nurse from SASH Adelaide. Starting in general practice back in 2014, she quickly fell in love with surgery and anaesthesia, eventually earning a Diploma in Surgery and taking on complex anaesthesia and critical care patients. Along the way, she discovered her passion for teaching and mentoring, leading her to roles as a trainer and lecturer.

Now at JCUVet, Nikki is here to share her expertise and love for learning! Outside of work, she’s a yoga instructor, novice powerlifter, dachshund lover, and nature enthusiast.

Fun fact? She came to North Queensland on holiday, lived in a caravan for months, landed a job, and never looked back!

When young children and cats need to share the same space, we recommend a few safety measures to help ensure the enjoyment and comfort of both parties.

Firstly, children below seven years of age should be supervised with cats, as they cannot always reliably read feline body language to know when the cat’s had enough!

Secondly, we advise that every cat living with children has at least one child-free retreat zone (such as an elevated bed or a room cordoned off by a baby-gate) where they can hide if they are feeling overwhelmed.

With the right prep, cats and children can become purr-fect friends! 😻🧒
