I had the pleasure of sharing time with John at uni and while in Malanda had dinner with him and his parents. This is a such a tragedy for his family, friends and colleagues. Our deepest condolences to John’s family. You will be always missed my friend.
It is with deepest sadness that we acknowledge the tragic and untimely passing of one of our TVS family, Dr John Hosie. Johnno literally grew up at TVS, a regular offsider even as a toddler to his dad and TVS partner, Dr Ian. Johnno's love for animals and veterinary science at that young age was probably only eclipsed by his love for planes, marvelling at 'Kilo Kilo Quebec' and 'Mike Bravo Hotel', the call signs for the two clinic Piper aircraft that were commonly used to get around the Gulf cattle stations through the 1980s. It surprised no one when John enrolled into the first cohort of students studying James Cook University’s Veterinary Science Degree in 2005.
Graduating in 2010, John moved away to Gympie Veterinary Service in South East Queensland, rounding his skills alongside their amazing team.
John was a natural as a veterinarian - clever, intuitive but most of all, affable and charming. He related to people from all walks of life but was always most at home with cattle and horses. He became the first JCU graduate to be recognised as a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the Reproductive Medicine chapter.
After a stint overseas, John rejoined our team in 2012, eventually becoming a partner in TVS as his dad, Ian, transitioned to retirement. To no one's surprise, John also worked towards his pilot license and was at his happiest flying around North Queensland's cattle stations pregnancy testing, bull testing, and soaking up station life.
Love eventually took Johnno away from TVS in 2020, and he moved west with fiancé Dr Michaela, also a JCU graduate and TVS vet, to Yan Yean cattle station near Richmond.
John and Michaela married in 2021 and welcomed a baby boy, Hayes, in 2023.
John passed away on Wednesday, 18th September following a tragic accident on his family property in Richmond. He is survived by wife Michaela and 1 year old son Hayes, father Ian, mother Sue, brother David and sister Claire.
He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Our love and support goes out to all his family and friends at this difficult time.
Many of our team – both past and present - will be attending John’s memorial in Townsville on Friday. Please bear with us as we will be a little light on staff in the clinic during this time.
