Continuing on from last weeks HOW TO PLAY WITH YOUR KITTEN series this week we are bringing you more information about what kittens learn through play!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆?
Before your kitten comes home to their human family they are born unto their mothers who tend to set them straight with boundaries from the beginning. It is natural for kittens to play rough and tumble and bite however their mothers set their boundaries immediately teaching them how and when to use their claws, learning to control their bite and also how to learn social and communication skills in their surroundings.

This is WHY it is so important to encourage safe play, because once the kitten is in their human home the focus of their play can be transferred to us!

So, always encourage appropriate and safe play!

A kitten’s life is all about playing and having fun of course!
Over the next few weeks we will cover why kittens play, what play looks like to kittens and how you can play with your kitten in a safe way!

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀!
It is so easy to dangle your fingers to play with your kitten but we strongly recommend to always use toys as this keeps your kitten’s teeth and claws away from your hands, toes and feet as they get older!

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀:
🧶Throw toys away from you, so that they have to chase and pounce on them.
🥓Place tasty treats inside some toys - this adds an extra challenge for your kitten, as once they have chased and caught the toy, they have to work out how they will get to the reward inside.
🐈‍⬛Play for a few short sessions every day and with a variety of toys to keep them interested and challenged.

Otherwise, ALWAYS allow your kitten to catch and grab the toy at the end of each game and remember to never force your kitten to play or be trained if they are not up for it!

Created by Jim Davis, this fictional cartoon character has won the hearts of many kids (and adults) since his creation in a comic strip back in 1978! From movies, to merchandise, to cartoons to plushies, this ginger ninja will not shy away from the spotlight anytime soon, and we love it!

When you come to the clinic and we want to collect a sample of your cats urine you may be wondering why this is important, and what do the results really tell us?

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁?
💚 Allows screening for conditions like diabetes, urinary tract infections, and kidney disease
💚 Assist with the early detection of abnormalities and help to monitor any pre-existing health conditions

A urinalysis is a series of lab tests run by your vet on your cats urine. The urinalysis tests for all sorts of things such as:

👉 Microscopically look for cells, bacteria, crystals, and casts

“Kittens with flat chests have a thoracic deformity that begins cranially around the forelimbs, and is characterised by sharp angulation at the costo-chondral junction causing marked dorso-ventral (top to bottom) flattening of the rib cage."

👉 We rely on blood tests to provide us with accurate and quick information about the health status of you cat!

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁?
🩸 We recommend once yearly until the age of 7 years
🩸 Once over 7 years we recommend every 6 months
🩸 If you cat is on new medication requiring monitoring of effects
🩸 Suggested to also confirm if your pet is safe to undergo anaesthesia
🩸 If you cat is displaying unusual symptoms requiring a blood test

Info: Some tests can be run on machines we have in house but there are certain tests that require more extensive equipment and so the blood sample is sent to an external laboratory with results given within a few days!

Getting a new little kitten in the family is a very exciting time and sometimes it can be overwhelming where to start! Especially if it is your first time!
