The Trafalgar Veterinary Centre was originally a one vet practice established in 1949 by Dr Wes Southgate. In February 1984 Dr Peter McCourt purchased the Centre. Dr Gee Tawfik joined in 1990 and became co-practice owner in 1991. In 2018 Dr Gee Tawfik became sole owner after Dr Peter McCourt retired. Dr Jared Waddell-Smith and Dr Jackson Chuo are now co-owners after purchasing the clinic from Dr G

ee Tawfik in 2021. Today the Trafalgar Veterinary Centre is open from 8.30am to 6:30pm Mondays and Thursdays, 8:30 to 5:00pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 10am to 12pm Saturdays. Our Newborough branch hours are from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Puppy Preschool is run by our very own Dr Kerrie Piper on Tuesday nights. The clinic offers an out of hour service for emergencies concerning any species with all emergency consultations conducted from the Trafalgar Centre.

Cute puppy post alert! 🐶

This gorgeous litter of Border Collie puppies came in for their 6 week health checks, microchipping and C3 vaccinations with Dr Alinda this week.

Though they look like happy and healthy fluffballs now, they did have a slightly rocky start to life.

Despite being under the care of an extremely experienced breeder some veterinary intervention was required.

When the big day came around, mum required extra assistance in the form of an emergency caesarean. Luckily, Dr Charli, Dr Jess and nurse Kaitlyn were on the job! The caesarean went well and all seven pups and mum recovered nicely.

Unfortunately, two days later, three puppies represented sick and were diagnosed with hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). Nurse Bron assisted Dr Jared and Dr Kerrie to resuscitate and stabilise them. It was determined that mum was not producing enough milk, and that supplement feeding was required. This may sound simple but it meant that the breeder had to feed all seven puppies through the day and night. Needless to say, she didn't get much sleep at all!

Luckily, all the hard work paid off and they've since grown into the adorable puppies you see now!

We wish this beautiful litter well on their next adventure - meeting their new families!

Today is Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day!

So we thought it would be time for a long overdue introduction of our dynamic duo at reception!

✨✨ Alicia and Amanda ✨✨

A veterinary receptionist is a two word job title however the reality is that they are that and so much more. These two wonderful women make everything happen at the clinic and it's hard to imagine how we ever functioned without them!

If we were to list all the tasks that Alicia and Amanda complete day to day, we'd probably go over the word count for this post so we won't do that. In a simple summary - they coordinate the flow of the clinic and ensure that your sick pets get the care that they need.

They're always there to welcome you into the clinic with a friendly face, they're there to celebrate the happy moments like an exciting new addition to the family, but also provide much needed comfort during tough moments with a sick pet.

Alicia and Amanda take on so much but always start and end each day with a can-do attitude and a bright smile that lights up the room.

Please join us in celebrating these absolute rockstars!! ⭐ Alicia and Amanda, thank you for all that you do! 💕

Have a lovely and safe weekend!

02/09/2024

Hello everyone.

It looks like the clinic at Trafalgar should have power and reception again so we will be open today unless anything changes.

At the moment Newborough is still without power so we will remain closed there until power is restored.

Please be patient with us as we expect our phone lines to be busy today playing catch up from the weekend.

We apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to being operational again!

** Update - power restored Tuesday morning **

Hi everyone, we hope you are all staying safe.

The weather has taken our power at Trafalgar and Newborough, including our phones and internet access. At this time we are closed at both clinics, probably until Tuesday morning, pending return of power and internet.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

It must be the week for eyelids! Patches is suspected to have had an altercation with a fence, giving herself a pretty nasty eyelid laceration.

It’s looking much better after a clean up and repair under local anaesthetic. Some injections for pain and infection, and then she was straight back out into the paddock.

Say hello to Roxy, who spent the day with us at Newborough today. She had a tumour grow rapidly on her eyelid over the last couple of weeks, and had surgery with Dr Jared today.

She is an absolute sweetheart and had one last cuddle with nurse Rachael before heading home.🐶❤️

Did you see our Pumpkin advocating for routine health checks of senior felines in the latest Traf District News?

If you missed it you can read his interesting story below!
(Don't worry Pumpkin is fine) 👑🐱💕

A medical case study: featuring Pumpkin
By Dr. Jared Waddell-Smith

Many of you will remember Pumpkin – that orange and white fluffball who used to roam the clinic looking regal and important.

You may then also recall that he had a fiery streak in him – he was best not disturbed when resting, and the occasional paw swipe occurred for those who approached too quickly, or just if he was having a bad day.

Pumpkin retired from clinic life 2 years ago. At the respectable age of 16 he is now living a life of leisure in Shady Creek. He has a chance to go outside under supervision, and spends his nights sitting on laps in front of the TV with warmth from the wood heater.

About 2 months ago, it was noticed that he was becoming more aggressive. If his captive human dared move him so they could reposition themselves, he would come back and attack with a menacing bite. At first this was put down to just ‘Pumpkin being Pumpkin’, even though for the most part he has been well-behaved in his new home.

He came in for a health check at the clinic, and he had lost 600g in weight since last year.

His previous blood test results were reviewed. For a number of years he has had a very slight increase in one of his kidney enzymes, but on his blood test result from last year this had normalised for the first time. His thyroid hormone had not been checked since he changed homes 2 years ago.

A repeat blood test was ran, and Pumpkin has now been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. This disease occurs when the thyroid gland develops growths which secrete too much thyroid hormone. In people, the opposite is much more common (hypOthyroidism) where there is not enough thyroid hormone.

Excessive thyroid hormone causes an over-active metabolism, and symptoms can include weight loss despite a normal or ravenous appetite, altered behaviour such as roaming and crying through the night, aggression, poor coat health, vomiting and muscle weakness. On a more medical level, it can also cause high blood pressure which can lead to damage to organs such as kidneys and the eyes, sometimes leading to permanent blindness.

The changed kidney value last year was a small clue towards Pumpkin’s possible diagnosis, because increased blood pressure from hyperthyroidism sometimes artificially lowers the kidney markers on a blood test.

The good news to report – three weeks after starting treatment, Pumpkin’s aggression at night has completely resolved, his thyroid hormone levels have returned to normal, he has gained back 180g and thankfully there has been no deterioration in his kidney markers.

The most common treatment for hyperthyroidism is daily medication, in either oral tablets or liquid, or a cream which can be rubbed onto the ears. This is an ongoing treatment for life.

There is also the option of a permanent cure. We can refer cats to a clinic where they are given radioactive iodine. This destroys the abnormal thyroid tissue and is successful at permanently curing the condition in over 95% of cases from a single treatment.

Having results from a blood test performed when a pet is healthy, gives us a baseline value specific to that patient, which can be compared to if they are unwell in future.

Consider a blood test as part of your cat’s health care plan, especially for those over 7 years of age.
