ANOTHER YEAR DONE & DUSTED 🔥

So that’s another year done and dusted for the Farriery Apprentices at GOTAFE in Wangaratta

A hectic week of assessments and submissions culminated on Friday with our ‘End of Year Awards and Forging Competition’

This year we have an incredible 10 4th Year Apprentices graduating with the Cert 4 going out into the wide world in the New Year

These guys have been brilliant over the last 3 months of ‘final’ assessments and I wish them all the luck

They were awarded quite amazing gifts from both Mustad Australia and Tallahesse J C Milton & Co to mark the occasion

The Annual Awards were won as follows by 4 fantastic students who have gone above and beyond this year. They were awarded certificates and prizes kindly donated NGK Farrier Supplies PTY LTD

Apprentice of the Year - Julian Stubbs
Most Improved Apprentice - Tommy Allen
Best Anatomy Studies - Zac Kennedy
Best Written Theory - Taleah Cameron

The Forging Competition was hotly contested, but it was also great to see the camaraderie of different year groups advising and striking for others through the day.

The great thing about tidying the workshop is finding all the goodies lurking in the wild

The endless stacks of shoes made by the guys over the last few years are finally finding a new home

FITTING TO TEMPLATES 🔥

Today I’ve made up some templates to simulate horses feet for the guys at TAFE who are going to take their hard earned basic shoemaking skills to the next level

As a rite of passage we start on wooden templates, then move on to cadaver legs before letting loose on live horses. I’ve nailed shoes on this time to prevent the workshop being set on fire!

Every Farrier forges shoes differently with some making shoes 2 sizes bigger than others from the same original length of steel

The Apprentices will measure the templates, calculate the material required and then make and fit various shoes to the solar surface

Hopefully they will learn how bumping, drawing and fullering affects the size of the shoes they make taking away the guesswork and potential heartache as they move on up through the training process

Failing that I will have a range of paperweights or doorstops available for sale very soon 😅

Cheers people 🍺

DUSTING OFF THE TOOLS 🔥

With the cost of living going up the time has come to dust off the shoemaking tools 😅

The last couple of days I’ve been reacquainting myself with an old friend, Aluminium Firewelding

It’s true in business, time is money, but a simple pair Barshoes can be made in less than half an hour

Quicker than driving to the Farrier supplies on panicked Monday morning and cheaper than collecting dust waiting for a rainy day, not to mention good for the soul 😎

Have a good weekend people 🍺

‘SKILLS HARD EARNED, ARE NOT FORGOTTEN’ 🔥

This is a phrase that was used by one of the great Farriers the other day and whilst I haven’t been making many shoes recently, this is no doubt apt of many Farriers journeys.

In a World where ‘you can buy anything you need’ the blood, sweat and tears shed in many Forges through time now seem futile to some.

Yes, most horses are shod with machine made shoes thesedays, but it’s also ok to ‘be better’ and want to master your trade.

A few weeks ago my colleague Rod Craig and I ventured to the Dookie Food and Fibre expo, a careers expo for school leavers.

Amazingly, Farriery was the most subscribed workshop with over 100 kids spread over 4 sessions where we provided info on the industry and made some basic shoes to ‘capture interest’.

Today, I fitted some of the shoes. Maybe you can’t actually buy everything you need.

Cheers people 🍺

1 YEAR OF FARRIERY at GOTAFE 🚀

It is now over a year since the transfer of Farriery Training in Victoria to GoTafe in Wangaratta

What a year it’s has been 🤯

Amongst the blood, sweat and ‘tears’ there has been huge progression and success for the Apprentice group as a whole

To be part of their journey alongside my colleagues Rod Craig and Jonathan Leoncini has been a great privilege

A World Class workshop facility has been developed from scratch which is only to be improved with a further fully equipped ‘Shoeing Shed’ next year !

Not only this, we now have a full programme of Equine Anatomy and Theoretical Farriery where over 90% of the Apprentices gained excellent marks in their end of year testing

An incredible result that can only bode well for the Equine Industry in the future

Well done and good luck to the qualifying 4th Years and roll on next year 😎

WINTER SUNSHINE ☀️ 🇦🇺

A little bit of Winter Sunshine makes us all feel a bit more alive amongst the rain and mud 🚀

To mark the occasion we tackled these tricky feet with a set of handmades 🔥

Gee it feels good to get handmade shoes on feet 😃

In this world of now, now, now there’s nothing better than dusting off your tools, using your skills and bringing a bit of sunshine into your life 😎

Keep the trade alive 🤙🏼

Have a good one people 🍻

HAPPY EASTER 🐣

Yesterday we hosted our inaugural Easter Marquee at Balnarring Races for our clients and friends who have been so supportive over the years 🥳

It was joint celebration for the team as we congratulated Kyle for starting his apprenticeship, Zoe becoming a fully qualified Farrier and Tom completing a year in Australia (and a baby on the way) 🚀

Well done guys 🤩

The day was so filled with fun and laughs that I barely took a photo, which is a sign of a great day out 😎

Not only this, but the race club laid on pony rides, games, face painting and an Easter Hunt for the kids for FREE 🤯

Thanks to all our guests, you are truly welcome and made the day what it was. We look forward to hosting you again next year 😎

I must say I’m a little ‘tired’ today 😅

Cheers Ed, Family and Team 🍻

WELCOME TO THE TEAM KYLE 😎

Today was the day that Kyle signed his life away to the greatest profession in the World (well, I think so) 📝

A Farriery apprenticeship is a hard slog, both physically and mentally, but I have no doubt he has both the aptitude and drive to be very successful 💪🏼

Kyle has worked in the thoroughbred breeding industry both in Australia and the UK and comes with exceptional horse handling skills 🐴🇬🇧🇦🇺

I am very excited to see how he develops over the next 4 years…🚀

Good luck Kyle 🍻

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS 🥳

It’s with great pleasure and pride to announce that Zoe has completed her Certificate 4 in Farriery ☺️

Nobody has worked harder and deserves the success more than Zoe ⭐️

From getting lifted off the ground on day one, she’s dusted herself off, forged, studied, trimmed and shod herself into the very best apprentice a boss could wish for 💪🏼

She will now complete her apprenticeship at Christmas before we look forward to seeing what the next chapter of her Farriery career brings 😎

Whatever her plans I have no doubt it will be a huge success 🚀

Well done Zoe 🍻

Something a bit different Friday afternoon for the 3rd and 4th years at our new Farrier Apprentice training facility at GoTafe Wangaratta

Vaughan Ellis of Pegasus Shoeing very generously donated a vast quantity of 3D printed pads for the guys to practice and trial as part of their training

With a brief of a ‘Racehorse with Caudal Hoof Pain’ the students set about fitting both Front and Hind patterns to cadaver legs with some great results

At the end of the day the whole Apprentice cohort gathered to observe and when given the opportunity some 1st and 2nd years even came forward to ‘give it a crack’

Although maybe a little advanced for some of the learners in the earlier years it is great to open their eyes to all techniques and materials available.

Hope you all had a great week 😎

TODAY WAS A GREAT DAY 🥐🍩🥮🧁

To our great surprise we were presented with an amazing selection box of pastries from The Bakers Wife by Lizzie this morning 🥳

It’s not even Christmas for 3 months 😎

It was at this point ‘Vie the horse’ when straight to the top of the ‘important clients list’ 🚀

Of course I left all the goodies for Zoe and Tom to munch their way through 😇

What a good boss I am 😅

Harriet, I assume you will top your Mum next time you’re in town 🤷🏻‍♂️

Happy Monday people 🍰

END OF AN ERA 🐴🔥⚒

After the best part of 25 years it was my pleasure to run the very last Farriery training session at Melbourne Polytechnic before it transfers GoTafe in Wangaratta 🚛

Although training will cease at the Epping campus it’s legacy built by Colin Smith will live on in the Farriery industry forever. Col has been an institution in Farriery training in Australia for over 2 decades and it was pretty daunting trying to fill his boots 🥾

Over the last 10 months I have been ably supported by Rod Craig and I think in this time we have created an inclusive and positive environment for the students to develop skills they may not have the opportunity of every day in the workplace 😊

It has been an incredibly turbulent and uncertain time in Farriery training with the introduction of Cert 4, Covid and a transition to a new institution, but the students have managed to thrive and develop to become professional qualified Farriers of the future 💪🏼

Some even becoming accustomed to doing homework without even moaning 😅

As we move on to Wangaratta, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, but I am sure we will be able to develop one of the best facilities and courses in Australia 😎

Rod will now step up to the role of ‘Project Lead’ and with his passion, experience and knowledge of the Industry, not to mention his supreme co-ordination skills I have no doubt the future of training in Victoria is in very good hands 👍

I will also continue to teach, whilst also running my Farriery business day to day. I have loved teaching from the first online session and it will be my pleasure to continue the journey with current Apprentices and welcome the newbies in the future 👨🏻‍🎓

Onwards and upwards people 🚀

TOM THE POM : 3 month update 🥳

As the days go by Tom or ‘Pomo’ as he is now known in some circles seems to be adjusting to Australian life just great 😎

He’s just at home wrestling sheep, surfing the waves, kicking the ‘footy’ or spinning a yarn 😂🐏🏄🏼‍♂️🏉

It’s great to have him on board and he’s a great addition to the team, even if he does moan a lot being a typical Pom 😅

What do you reckon Zoe ??? 😬

He’s even offered his time in the Forge to some local apprentices to help with their shoemaking which I’m sure they are very grateful 🔥

Here’s a nice little handmade concave job of his today to prove he does do some work 😉

No pads, no gel, no dim, just good basic shoeing 💪🏼

Good on ya Tom 🍻
