⚠️ TIPS AND TRICKS FOR FINDING TICKS ⚠️

πŸ—“οΈ A friendly reminder to be aware of ticks as ticks are prevalent all year round.

πŸ”Ž Please complete daily tick searches on your pets, regardless of if they are indoor pets or not. Tick searches are done by feeling your pets fur starting from your pets nose and working your way down the body.

πŸ”‘ Key area's to check when doing tick searches on your pets:
- Around the eyes
- Inside the ears
- Around the mouth
- Inbetween paw pads
- Around the neck
- Inner thighs
- Armpits
- Skin folds

🩸Paralysis tick bites contain toxic saliva that interrupts the connection between the nerves and the bodies muscles. This is dangerous as it causes pets to have weakness and ultimately paralysis.

Symptoms to look out for:
- Difficulty Breathing
- Paralysis
- Lethargy
- Wobbly/staggering gait (ataxia)
- Weakness
- Vomiting
- Retching
- Changes in vocalisation

🐾 Please ensure your pets are up to date with their tick prevention. At Midcoast, we stock a wide selection of tick prevention, ranging from collars, chews to topical spot-ons.

πŸ“²Midcoast Animal Hospital also sends out sms reminders if tick prevention is purchased from us, so owners can stay on track!

πŸ“ž If you’re unsure if your pet has been bitten by a tick or are want to learn about which tick prevention is the best suited to your pet, please call us on (02) 6557 2273.

EDIT - Gigi has found a caring home!! 🌼

🌼 Gigi 🌼

Meet the adorable little Gigi, who is a bundle of energetic cuteness that is looking for her forever home.

This little girl was hand raised by our nurse Mel along with her siblings after they were dropped into the clinic without a mumma cat. Hence why she is a little on the spoilt side and adored by our nurses! Gigi needs a home that understands the stages of kitten mayhem as she loves to play.

She is an active girl but also still loves a lengthy cuddle. If you are looking for a cute kitten with a dash of cheekiness, Gigi could be the right fit for you!

She will have had all necessary vet work inc, health checked, microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, flea and worm treated.

Does your pets breath smell?πŸ™Š

If so, your pet could have dental disease.

Did you know 80% of dogs over the age of 3 years show signs of gum disease!

Dental disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed conditions in companion animals. So, dental health is vital for your pets well-being. πŸ’š

Unfortunately, if untreated dental issues can help lead to illnesses like dental abscesses, oral infections, heart and kidney disease. πŸ«€

Signs of dental issues: πŸ›‘

- Red, bleeding and swollen gums
- Weight loss
- Excessive drooling (ptyalism)
- Decreased appetite
- Only using one side of the mouth to eat food or dropping food
-Blood on toys or blood in the water bowl
- Pawing at mouth
- Build up of tarter or plaque on teeth
- Stained and discoloured teeth
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Missing/broken teeth
- Swelling under an eye

Factors that can contribute to decreased oral health: 🦷

- Breed: Although gum disease occurs in all breeds, certain breeds are more prone to teeth issues like chihuahuas and toy poodles. Brachycephalic (flat-nosed breeds) cat and dog breeds are also at an increased risk of dental issues due to having anatomically narrower airways. This makes it easier for bacteria to multiply in the nose, mouth and throat. 🐩

- Solely or primarily wet food diets particularly if the animal is young.🍴

- Eating cooked bones: Cooked bones are more likely to break, creating bone shards that can cut the mouth leading to an increase in bacteria. Cooked bones are also more likely to fragment into smaller pieces. This is a chocking risk and creates more of a risk of the bone getting stuck in the pets mouth. If you would like to feed your pets bones, please ensure that they are uncooked and are big enough to not be accidentally swallowed by your pet. 🦴

- Pica: Animals eating inappropriate/non-food items like rocks, feacal matter and rubbish causes damage to the enamel and introduces additional bacteria into the mouth. πŸͺ¨

- Gastrointestinal (GI) issues like persistent vomiting can lead to gastric acids weakening the outer protective covering of the teeth, the enamel. ⁉️

- Diabetes can reduce blood circulation to the gums (gingiva) and can limit saliva production. Saliva neutralises acids brought about from food consumption and aids in protecting the teeth from sugar and microbes. 🩸

- Age: Over time wear and tear can hinder the enamel quality. πŸ›‘

The team at Midcoast Animal Hospital stocks a wide range of over the counter dental products which all work in different ways to help your pets oral health. 🏨

Dental Products Stocked:

- Dental water additives. πŸ’§
- Specifically formulated dental dry food. 🐢
- Pet friendly tooth brushes. πŸͺ₯
- Pet friendly tooth paste (please note human tooth paste is not safe to use on pets). 🩺
- Dental chews like Oravet dental chews. πŸ•

Midcoast Animal Hospital offers dental issue consultations with our veterinarians which can be booked online on the Midcoast Animal Hospital website:

❀️ HEARTWORM ❀️

🦟 Heartworm is a parasitic worm that infects pets via mosquito bites. As mosquitoes transmit heartworm both indoor and outdoor pets can be affected.

πŸ«€ Heartworm affects the heart and can have a slow onset. Symptoms include:
- Coughing
- Lethargy
- Shortness of breath
- Weight loss
- Inappetance

πŸ’‰ Heartworm is diagnosed via a blood test which is done in-house at the clinic.

πŸ₯ Heartworm can be treated but prevention of heartworm is the best form of heartworm control. In addition, keeping up to date with heartworm prevention is crucial as lapsed heartworm prevention doses leave pets vulnerable to heartworm infestations.

🐾 At Midcoast Animal Hospital we stock a wide range of products that prevent against heartworm from spot-on's, annual injections to chews!

πŸ“² Midcoast Animal Hospital also sends out sms reminders if heartworm prevention is purchased from us, so owners can stay on track!

🐱 MEET THE β€œG” LITTER! 🐱

These absolute little cuties are looking for their forever homes!
They all have very mature personalities for kittens so if you are looking for a calm kitten who is quite happy to chill around, enjoy a pat or snuggle and of course the occasional play then these babies could be suitable for you.
As you can see their favourite thing is a cardboard box so they have asked us to pop that in the requirements of their new home having one is a must!

We are estimating their age to be about 8 weeks old. They will have each had all necessary vet work inc, health checked, microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, flea and worm treated before going on their new adventure.
