As we are coming up to Bird breeding season in Sept/Oct I want to put a challenge out to everyone.

With deforestation, bushfires and other natural disasters, hollowed out trees are becoming less and less available.

My challenge is for everyone to buy or build a nesting box put up in a tree safely (use professional) and take a photo, once you have visitors take another photo so we can follow the journey.

For Pets Sake

Let’s see what a difference we can do .

Build a nest box to help local wildlife thrive! 🏡

Did you know most of our native wildlife needs tree hollows for shelter? Natural hollows take over 100 years to develop and are very scarce due to wildfires and deforestation. But we can help by building nest boxes that provide the same function.

Follow the link for step-by-step instructions on how to build a nest box ⤵️

Get involved and make a difference for our precious wildlife 💚

Did You Know? That Sun Flowers are not just pretty faces. They're often planted to help clean up contaminated soil. Sun Flowers are known as Phytoremediators, meaning they can Absorb and Accumulate Heavy Metals and Toxins from the soil, effectively Detoxifying it. These cheerful flowers not only brighten up gardens but also contribute to environmental clean up efforts
History is not there for you to like or dislike. It is there for you to learn from it. And if it offends you, even better. Because then you are less likely to repeat it. It’s not yours for you to erase or destroy.

🦋 Saving the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly by Taking on a Killer W**d 🌿

The Dutchman's Pipe Vine (Aristolochia elegans) started innocently enough as an ornamental garden plant, known for its striking reddish-purple pipe-shaped flowers. But it quickly turned into a troublesome environmental w**d. 🌺

Escaping from gardens, the Dutchman's Pipe invaded native habitats, including rainforests, riparian zones, roadsides, and agricultural areas. But its most alarming impact? Its deadly interaction with the endangered Richmond birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia). 😔

This vine emits a pheromone that tricks the delicate Richmond birdwing into laying eggs on its leaves. Sadly, when the eggs hatch, the larvae unwittingly munch on the vine's toxic foliage. 💔

Now, the Dutchman's Pipe Vine (Aristolochia elegans) is recognised as a significant threat to this beautiful endangered butterfly. Even worse, in the presence of the Dutchman's Pipe Vine (Aristolochia elegans), the birdwing butterfly prefers to lay its eggs on this deadly vine rather than its native host plant, the birdwing butterfly vine (Pararistolochia praevenosa). 🌱

A prolific invader, the Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia elegans) produces hundreds of seeds that burst from their basket-like pods and spread widely on the wind. 🌬️

To protect the rare Richmond birdwing butterfly, it's crucial to address the Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia elegans) invasion. Additionally, the butterfly requires connected habitat containing its native host plants. 🌳

The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, once abundant in Brisbane, has sadly disappeared from more than two-thirds of its former habitat range. But there's hope! Efforts led by the Richmond Birdwing Recovery Network are underway to reintroduce the butterfly to areas within its historical range, emphasising the importance of preventing threats to newly established populations. 🙌

Since 2010, the Department of Environment and Science, alongside the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network (RBCN) and David Fleay Wildlife Park, has collaborated on a captive-breeding and release programme to safeguard the vulnerable Richmond birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera richmondia). 🦋

This programme involves pairing Richmond birdwing butterflies from various regions to promote genetic diversity in their offspring. These offspring, reared in captivity, are then reintroduced into carefully selected sites to bolster declining wild populations. 🌟

Following the initial releases in 2010, there has been promising evidence of natural breeding among the butterflies. Additionally, sightings of over a dozen flying adults have been documented in the Kin Kin and Cootharaba areas of the Sunshine Coast, marking the first such sightings in nearly two decades. 🦋✨

What can you do?

Educate others about the harmful effects of the Dutchman's Pipe Vine (Aristolochia elegans) and assist your local bushcare group in identifying and controlling this invasive species. 🗣️ And remember, even small insects require wildlife corridors! 🌿
