Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

☀️Warmer climates☀️
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

💚Keep your pet inside
💚Provide a warm, soft, elevated bed
💚Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
💚Move your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
💚Provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
💚Keep all bedding dry
💚Wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
💚Walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

Karl completed a Bachelor of Animal Science at the University College of Dublin in 2014. He moved to Budapest, Hungary to complete a postgraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Losing a pet is a devastating feeling😢

Microchipping your pet significantly increases the likelihood of reuniting with your furry friend! 🐕🐈

A microchip is an implant about the size of a grain of rice and is implanted at the base of the pet's neck. A microchip does not function like a tracking device. However, it does allow your local vet or council to scan the chip and find your contact information so you can reunite with your pet 🐾

It's very important to keep your pet's microchip information up to date with a valid phone number so we can contact you . You can do this by contacting your local council.

Emergency and Specialty Vets are sounding the alarm about the rise in paralysis ticks affecting our pets. 🐾 With the unseasonal warmth lingering into autumn and rain, the conditions are ripe for these dangerous pests.
At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

Pet owners are urged to perform daily tick checks, as early detection can save lives.

It's Veterinary Nurse Awareness month

If you don’t know already, we do many things!
From taking the call to book in a client, triaging emergencies, admits, venepuncture and IV catheterisation, monitoring anaesthesia, performing diagnostic tests, preparing medication, and discharging patients back to their owners. And don't forget the endless cleaning, washing & p**p pick up.💩

Some of us are practice managers, senior nurses, or specialists. Some of us work with wildlife, some at your local veterinary clinic. Some of us work in education, cultivating the next generation of nurses, and some work in the charity sector or research. Some days are fun and rewarding, and some days are challenging & emotional 💔
We work long hours, and we work weekends. We are compassionate but also a voice for all animals. We have a wide range of skills, switching between many different roles during the day. We work hard and love what we do💚

A massive shout out to Dr Ana and Nurse Abby, who recently spent a week in Vanuatu spreading their knowledge and love 💚💚

A lot of hard work has been done by the successful combined team of Sam's Animal Welfare Association and Vets Beyond Borders at our pop-up clinic in Pango Vanuatu 🇻🇺
The official tally of animals desexed this week, and receiving treatments was 122. That's an average of 20+ animals a day. Fantastic work by fantastic humans🥰
