Boof is an XXL Bully who was imported from overseas to come and live with his new family. His family have done an extraordinary job of raising a really lovely, well rounded dog! Boof has no behavioural concerns, but his family wanted to really work to improve his recall, loose leash walking and off leash heel.

Boof is a very trainable dog and loves being at the farm. He first spent 3 weeks here in our regular boarding packages, with add on services before coming back a month later and participating in a 2 week Stay and Learn.

Here is what Boof's owner has to say about her two recent stays:
Our friend has suggested TTL we were hesitant leaving him there for 3 weeks, we booked him stay and play. From the first day the staff sent us updates on Boof how he settled in nicely, and gives us a run down what his day would look like depends on the weather plus a follow up of a daily photos of him.

We felt at east seeing his big smile and were able to relax on our holiday knowing he’s having an awesome time. The second time we booked him in for a stay and learn, we express our concerns with the teams and they were happy to take Boof under their wings. These were some of the things TTL work on with Boof Leash Skills, Recall, Handler Engagement with Dog Distractions, Street Passes and Duration Obedience every session.

A large emphasis has been placed on his recall. And they were very happy with his progress. They showed us the technique that they used so we can try implementing this at home. One happy boy!
I would like to thanks the team for taking such good care of Boof, we will see you again in future ♥️

Bear came to us for a 2-week Stay and Learn recently! We dove straight into working on his intense car reactivity, and his leash skills.

Bear is a big, strong dog so when he is using all his strength to lunge and react to things with wheels, he was nearly impossible to hold making his walks completely unenjoyable and stressful.

Bear has a high genetic prey drive and if we do not channel these drives appropriately, they come out in ways that we, as owners find undesirable.

Genetic drives in dogs refer to innate, hereditary instincts that influence a dog’s behavior, often based on their ancestral purpose. These drives are shaped by selective breeding over generations and play a significant role in how a dog interacts with its environment, humans, and other animals.

Common Genetic Drives in Dogs:
1. Prey Drive – The instinct to chase, capture, or kill moving objects, often seen in hunting and herding breeds.

2. Pack Drive – A dog’s desire for social interaction, bonding, and working within a group, common in companion and working breeds.

3. Defense Drive – A natural instinct to protect itself (fight or flight) or guard territory, people, or possessions.

4. Herding Drive – A modified prey drive that causes dogs to stalk and control the movement of animals or people.

5. Hunting Drive – The tendency to track and locate prey, often seen in scent hounds and retrievers.

6. Retrieving Drive – The natural urge to chase and bring back objects, common in breeds like Labradors and Golden Retrievers.

7. Food Drive – Motivation driven by food rewards, which is useful in training.

8. Play Drive – The instinct to engage in play behaviors, crucial for socialization and training.

Understanding genetic drives helps dog owners choose the right breed for their lifestyle and train their dogs more effectively by working with their natural instincts rather than against them.

Working with Bear was a great challenge and we loved adapting our training styles to suit the needs of the dog that’s infront of us! That’s the joy of ‘balanced training’ ✨

Mylo and Zara are two very energetic Kelpies who are regulars at the farm. They participate in our Stay and Play option and just spent 3 weeks with us whilst their humans travelled overseas.

Being Kelpies, the farm is the perfect place for them to board whilst their owners were away.

We are set on 23 acres, on the outskirts of Two Wells. The farm provides ample enrichment, space and activities for your dogs to participate in, keeping them nice and busy.

We are industry leaders and with our constant need to improve the services we offer, we are proud of everything we have created. There is nothing more we love than seeing our clients happy faces and reading their raving reviews post go-home!

It's a HOT one today and tomorrow! 🔥

Our staff have activated our hot weather policy which means no daycare or no day trains on site today.

All of our staff start before the sun is up (5:30am) to run the dogs, clean their sleeping areas and have them back into their air conditioned areas by 1030am! The dogs have plenty of access of fresh water, frozen treats and the dogs are routinely checked with the facility still being staffed as normal.

Our training dogs only participate in training sessions inside, in the air conditioning and if we conduct our field trips, the trainers are off site by 730am.

We are very proud of how we care for all your beloved pets in this horrible weather, and the dogs health and well being is our number one priority.

Can you see a common trend? PUPPIES, PUPPIES, PUPPIES!

Little Roxy's guardians have been watching our page from afar, knowing that they wanted to invest in our services when the time was right for them to bring their baby home. This was a long process, after they investigated breeders and found the right one for them. This is the type of dedication to dog ownership that we love to see.

Roxy's owners did not have any concerning problems thus far, but simply wanted to invest everything into her NOW so that they can pave her the path to success. Roxy is a lovely, sweet little puppy who was a pleasure to train and welcome to the farm. Her guardians are already following our training plan upon taking her home last week and sharing in our private Facebook group all of her adventures!

We can't wait to watch her grow and develop under careful guidance!

The little happy go lucky puppy is Bosco!

He is spending 10 days at the farm in our puppy camp to help combat some undesirable puppy behaviours. Staffordshire puppies can be full of life and this often escalates into unwanted behaviours. They carry a heightened mindset more often than not, and it is often difficult to teach them that 'off switch'.

Bosco is no different but his family have noticed this early and have invested into our services to set him (and them!) up for success.

Bosco is a very smart little man, who we have been working through our foundation program. He is learning all about how to grow up into a well balanced adult dog. He loves zoomies still, and cannot wait to show his family how to use objects like the flirt pole, two ball and how to engage in healthy, balanced play as a great outlet.

Winston is a young, 4 month old male Rottweiler pup who came in for a 5-day Puppy Camp.

Listening to the initial enquiry and performing the intake his guardians, they were detailing some of their concerns. These sounded like common puppy problems. Biting, mouthing, jumping, leash skills etc.

Upon working with Winston and performing his week of training, it was evident that we could see why his guardians were struggling. These puppy behaviours were infact very intense, even at such a young age. This can be challenging for new puppy owners and it can make you feel very isolated. You are reading all of the information available, listening to other peoples advice etc but when you have a difficult dog (even a puppy) this can feel overwhelming.

We got some very good results in a short space of time, but the most important part of this puppy camp was the handover with the owner. We spent adequate time with her going through the theory component, and spent a large amount of time going through the practical handling aspect.

Winston's guardians are going away for 2 weeks overseas next week so we get to spend a further 2 weeks training Winston. The idea of this is to set him up to be the best dog he can be whilst we have identified issues early on!

Overall, Winston is a great little puppy and his guardians are so invested and commited to his development. It is fantastic that they have identified these issues so early!

Henry has been coming to the farm for years and has participated in every package you can think of! Daycare, Stay and Learn, Day Trains, Regular boarding… and his owner used to work for us!

We have loved working with Henry over the years and working him through his little quirks. It is never a dull moment with Henry at the farm, even when his favourite game at the end of the day is ‘catch me if you can’! He knows that home time means no more farm, so we take it that he just never wants to leave ;)

Max is a German Shepherd dog has come to us for a 5 week stay and learn. When he arrived at the farm, he arrived muzzled and it was explained that he has been working with a number of trainers over the years. Unfortunately, none of them were able to really handle Max and the issues that he was presenting with. Max has severe reactivity and aggression towards unknown dogs and people. The high level of arousal has led Max to break out of the property and chase a postie quite intently.

Some of the presenting issues with Max also include nuisance barking, running away when he sees his walking equipment and leash skills. The owners goal is to provide him with a high level of training that can make Max feel comfortable in and out the home, and that the wife has a greater level of control.

Max has proven to be a really lovely, sweet dog with the correct handling but we have been working hard on setting all of these important foundations ready for his family to continue on with!

Did you know that we offer a re-train and rehome program here at Take the Lead?

We take in a very small number of dogs and provide them with the love, care, and the training they require before being place in a new home. Over the past two months, we have been working hard with 4 young Rottweilers who we have taken into care.

They are all incredibly nervous, lack socialisation, love, care and attention and flinch at the thought of touch. We have gotten them to a great place, but the process is a long one. We are working hard on their confidence, overall nutrition and weight!

These dogs have really worked their way into all our staffs hearts, so it is going to be so sad to see them go but we cannot wait for their next life adventures.

We are so close to starting to list these beautiful dogs, so if you are willing to open your heart to a Rottweiler, please keep your eye on our page for their profiles!

Welcome Finn, the 2 year old Australian Shepherd.

Finn came to us for a Behavioural Assessment and then he registered straight in for a 3-week Stay and Learn program. Finn’s guardian has instilled some beautiful training into him and it shows but he has been struggling with dog to dog reactivity and leash skills when in public and a heightened state.

Finn’s guardian would love to be able to take him out to cafes, and enjoy his company even more than they already do without feeling worried about seeing another dog. Whilst Finn has been at the farm, we have seen a heightened reaction towards men so we have been working hard through that.

A large goal has been to teach Finn to turn off and relax by utilising techniques like back tie, sit on the dog, obedience with distance, duration and distraction and so much more. We see plenty of working dog owners really focusing on the physical outlets, but not enough on the teaching of a calm mindset, so this is always a great tool for us to teach our busy working dog friends.

Mindset over obedience for our pet owners!

Deeks is a lovely 5 year old Kelpie x Bull Terrier who has come to the farm for a stay and learn. Deeks was a dog rescue from Dubbo many years ago, but has since reqiuired multiple surgeries and rehabilitation. This alone, is difficult for any dog to manage but when he was badly attacked by another dog, this set all of Deeks training backwards, and his confidence was non-existent.

Before this attack, Deeks was always a social dog, who had no concerns socialising with family dogs, or dogs in the environment. His guardian utilised the stay and learn to help with Deeks confidence, training and to improve his behaviour around other dogs (on and off leash).

Deeks sister Gigi, came in for an assessment and day training services over Deeks Stay and Learn so we could assess their behaviours and dynamics between the two dogs. This is always interesting to observe, and to provide feedback to the owner about their relationship!

Deeks has done so well through his training program, and although, we always recommend advocating for our dogs in confronting situations, we were very happy with his behaviour around other dogs throughout his stay and learn. We even integrated him into so social yard successfully on his first week - it is all about understanding dogs behaviours and setting him up for success!

We have so many beautiful Staffy Puppies coming to us for training at the moment!

This is Ruby's second puppy camp! Her mum knew she had two very busy weeks at work coming up, so it was imperative to her that she was using time wisely and registered Ruby well in advance into our 5 day training camps. This was perfect as Ruby is still in her critical period of development!

Ruby is an excitable little energiser bunny who loves life (I feel like we say this for all Staffords!). She has had some great foundations already laid from the first training program and her guardian has been working hard each and every day.

Over this stay, we were fine tuning her leash skills and starting to develop some impulse control exercises to help Ruby self regulate. Her guardian wants to ensure that she is very well crate trained, so we concentrated on developing a love of the crate.

Ruby has tripled in size since we last saw her and I can only imagine how big she will be at her next visit! Well done Ruby and Rebecca, we have loved helping develop such a well rounded little pup!

Ivy has been a regular guest at the farm since 2021 and is always in our Stay and Play package 🌿

Ivy is the queen of the social yards and loves engaging and meeting new dogs. She is great with our new guests who may be a bit on the nervous side and encourages them gently to come and explore all the farm has to offer 🌾⚽️🚜

Ivy has had 28 boarding stays in total, and 16 days of daycare!

Even though, in this time Ivy's parents have moved down South, we still get the privilege to care for her whenever her family goes away!

Zephyr is a young, male adolescent Rottweiler who has started testing the boundaries at home! His owner did plenty of research and decided to send him to us for a 3-week Stay and Learn. She saw my love for this beautiful breed!

Zephyr has plenty of foundational skills that he owner has taught him, but as he is coming into the testing teenage years, he is becoming more difficult to manage. Zephyr is currently 9 months old.

Zephyr has quite a high prey drive and this has started to come out in chasing cars, kids running and fastened movements. He has been presenting with reactivity towards people who look slightly different (glasses, hats, etc). As Zephyr is going to be a family pet with children in the home, it was vital that his guardian got on top of these problematic behaviours as soon as possible.

At home, Zephyr has a history of stealing this - toilet paper, towels, pillows - anything he can get his paws on! He turns this into a game, but has started to show signs of resource guarding which we need to get on top of immediately.

At night, Zephyr takes a long time to settle and often has night time zoomies that become quite dangerous due to his sheer size and power. His guardian has been sitting with him, feeding him treats until he relaxes so a large component of the training was to help put some training and management strategies in place that the family can work with inside the home.

Zephyr has a lovely personality, and with some control and further training, he will make a fantastic pet. We have been so privileged to work with him over this time and we cannot wait to see him reunite with his owner!

Felix and Bailey have just finished up their 2 week stay and learn whilst their humans went on a holiday!

Bailey and Felix used to live on 10 acres but have just moved to a much smaller yard and have started to show some destructive tendencies. Due to this adjustment taking a bit of extra time, we spent lots of time working on management strategies to assist the guardians with managing them at home.

The owners were wanting an overall foundation based program, working on recall, leash skills and reducing reactivity around other dogs. Throughout their training, they lacked impulse control and therefore, the owner really wanted to help solidify duration obedience commands.

Being Border Collies, there are very smart and LOVE training so the 2 week stay and learn is a great opportunity to keep their minds busy and active whilst in boarding.
