Our Instructors and team members are all very much loved, valued and appreciated. I ask them to spend one on one quality time with the ponies in their care, to get to know and understand them and to let them know they are valued and appreciated as well. Darling Archibald loves his one on one's!❤️🥰🦄

❤️ I don't know if you can remember back to your first experience of riding - of being with a pony, grooming him or her ..... and the complete joy that you felt as a child. It stays with you. The happiness. Dezi had that impact on our pupils. Beautiful Myf tonight was sad when she arrived for her lesson but we chatted it through and she got on and had a wonderful lesson on Shazam. Life is full of so many ups and downs, all we can do .... is to love and support each other through those. ❤

Families across Australia are experiencing very testing times with a huge rise in the cost of living. It is looking like it will also be a little challenging this year for hay to feed. Our own home grown hay has now run out and we are buying in. Of the two fields we have planted up again for this season, one is already looking to fail and the other is showing a very short crop. Maybe some beautiful rain to nourish the ground and crops is on the way. 🤞

It is a day of rest here and two little boys used it to have a long discussion this afternoon about who's ball it actually is!! Shazam thinks it is his and of course so does Archie! First it was reasonably civilised, then a little more heated and then the ball was thrown down in disgust! If anyone has a spare ball lying around we'd be very grateful!! 😂

Our beautiful boy Dezi had some investigations in the week by Dan at Equus Veterinary Services. Some arthritis was found in his hock and it was recommended that he take a good rest to let it settle. His lovely mummy came and picked him up for his holiday break up at Adelaide Northern Horse Spelling & Agistment. Already we are feeling the Dezi shaped hole that he has left but want the best for him - that is the priority. I want to thank his owner for the care she has shown and of course for generously sharing him with us. He is an extraordinary pony that has given so many children pleasure through his life. He is approaching 20 yrs old now and for the next few months will be letting his hair down, relaxing and enjoying the fields up at Mallala. All our love goes to Dezi and his owner. ❤❤❤

Lessons well underway and going well in Term 3 - so far a challenging few weeks for us with all the bugs and viruses around - I am sure you have had the same in your household. Our dearest Dezi had a lovely pamper session with his pupil yesterday who was learning about the care involved when you have your own pony. And there is a lot of hard work and dedication involved in pony ownership, it is a serious undertaking. But the rewards are immense ......the joy and happiness they can bring to life! ❤️😍🦄

🐴 I love reading about misconceptions when it comes to feeding horses, but today I’d like to debunk some common myths about good old sodium chloride.

🧂 Myth #1: Salt only needs to be fed when the weather is hot.

🐴 Truth #1: Salt needs to be fed 365 days a year because it is vital for many bodily processes and is excreted in sweat, saliva, mucous and urine. Even in the midst of winter, horses need salt.

🧂 Myth #2: Horses instinctively know to drink water regularly, especially when they are hot and sweaty.

🐴 Truth #2: A horse’s thirst reflex is triggered by sodium, which is a component of salt. Horses’ sodium requirements need to be met in order for them to seek water.

🧂 Myth #3: A horse can meet their sodium and chloride requirements with a salt block alone.

🐴 Truth #3: Unlike cattle, horses do not have an abrasive tongue and are not designed to lick harsh surfaces to extract nutrients. While it is technically possible for a horse to consume their daily salt requirement from a salt block, it is much less work and more physiologically-appropriate for them to consume loose salt that is either provided in a meal or left out free-choice.

🧂 Myth #4: Horses know what nutrients they need and can self-medicate with supplements such as vitamins and minerals.

🐴 Truth #4: Salt is the only nutrient horses have been studied and proven to actively seek out when it is required. They will not seek out other nutrients “because they know they need it.” Look at how much salt and molasses (palatable additives) are added to free-choice supplements.

🧂 Myth #5: Himalayan rock salt is better for horses than plain salt.

🐴 Truth #5: Himalayan rock salt contains naturally occurring components other than sodium and chloride. Some may view this as a positive; however, it is usually a more expensive means of supplementing salt, and often contains traces of iron which almost never needs to be supplemented given horses are generally oversupplied iron by their forage intake alone.

🐎 Your horse’s diet should be providing a minimum of 10g of salt per 100kg of body weight each day; typically more after exercise, intense weather, or illness. Ensuring your horse always has access to clean, cool, and fresh drinking water will ensure they remain well-hydrated and if by chance they intake more salt than necessary, the water they drink allows them to excrete excess very effectively. The best kind of salt to feed is plain sodium chloride such as table salt, unless the diet is deficient in iodine which makes iodised salt more appropriate.

A great day of lessons today with a wonderful team of staff all giving 100%. One of the topics that came up for discussion through lessons was frustration …. Frustration with yourself, your performance, your pony, their performance ….. frustration in life …. What we looked at, was the option to choose how you respond to that frustration … you are mad but what do you do about it? Nothing, walk off, sulk, get cross … you can choose calmness, consider the situation, identify issues and triggers and how to resolve… channel that emotion into productive work to resolve. Use the energy of frustration to do some of your best work. Decide not to be beaten. 🥰❤️🦄 Thank you, as always to all pupils and their families, all the team and all the ponies for a wonderful day!

A full and lovely day of teaching today after the long awaited rains finally reached us at the end of the week. Finally the heavens opened on parched land and everyone was pleased …. Dezi loves the rain, mud and rolling so he was a happy boy …. Shazam didn’t have quite the same enthusiasm for the downpour! 😂😍❤️🦄
