SA Native Animal Rescue - SANAR SANAR is a wildlife rescue group in South Australia, working with the community to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native animals. Need help with an animal?

Contact us via Messenger SA Native Animal Rescue strives to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native animals, working with local vets, animal shelters, and experts to provide the best care for each animal. SANAR is a wildlife rescue group in South Australia, founded by passionate wildlife carers. We have many experienced carers across SA who volunteer their time and energy to rescue and care for i

njured, sick, and orphaned animals. We have carers that can rescue and care for birds (including birds of prey), possums, koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, and reptiles (excluding snakes). Many species require around the clock care, including feeds, toileting and even emergency rescues so our volunteers are also donating their sleep (or lack of) to care for these amazing animals. Our volunteers supply their own equipment, use their own vehicles to transport and care for the wildlife in their own homes. We appreciate all donations, whether financial, donation of services or donation of equipment. Please send us a message if you want to make a donation towards the care of our wildlife.

Poor mum was hit by a car, lucky the member of the public checked the pouch and found the little pinkie baby.
You can see his eyes are closed in the first photo, 2 weeks later he has opened up his eyes, getting some fur and has put on 30grms.
Isn't he beautiful ♥️

🌧🌩🌬SA is once again facing some wild weather with strong winds and heavy rain!🌧⛈️🌪

Please keep an eye out for waterlogged, displaced or injured wildlife as they dont have the privilege of sheltering inside buildings like we do. Some will have lost their homes with falling trees, others may have been blown off course from strong winds. If you find wildlife needing assistance please call SANAR on 08 7170 3924 or take the animal to a vet.

Keep warm and safe everyone!

Stay Equipped, Stay Prepared, Stay Kind and be ready to help our native wildlife whenever necessary!

Everyone should have a Wildlife Rescue Car Kit in the boot of their cars! We have rescue kits containing the tools that are essential to wildlife rescue, as well as a booklet giving guidelines on how to safely rescue wildlife in case of an emergency prior to bringing the animal to the vet or a permitted wildlife carer.

The Kits can help to save more native wildlife lives by decreasing the amount of time between rescue and care.

SANAR wildlife rescue kits are available on our website.⬇️

Baby pigeons feed by sticking their beak into mums and drinking her "crop milk" 🍼so they won't open their mouths and gape like normal birds. Carers will use their fingers either side of the beak to emulate the feeling of having their beak inside of mums so that they open up to get take food. This also means that when raise from small babies they will take any opportunity to nuzzle into your fingers 🥰

Remember the baby crested pigeons? They came in as a day old and an egg starting to hatch and now you can barely recognise them as the same birds. They still need feeding and often prefer the ground to perching still but they are doing really well.

The tree martins have now mostly migrated away from their roosting site in Rundle Mall! From about 10,000 birds at their peak, last week there were only around 200 birds still roosting in the trees near Optus and Apple in the mall.

SANAR is no longer needing to go out every night giving out volunteers a much needed break.

We would live to thank all the volunteers that attended over the last six week, it has been a massive commitment for the wildlife rescue world and every bit of support has helped.

We would also like to thank the vets that helped us assess and treat the birds including:
Southcoast Animal Hospital
Mount Barker Veterinary Clinic
McLaren Vale Veterinary Surgery
Marion Animal Hospital
Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre
SASH Adelaide
And any other vet clinics that received Tree Martins from members of the public.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank the Adelaide City Council, Rundle Mall and the businesses (Apple and Optus among many others), Green Adelaide, Department of Environment, and all the other people involved in the Tree Martin Working Group who helped to make the necessary changes to protect the Tree Martins.

And finally we would like to thank you, the members of public who were attending the scene before we were ever aware of the issue, or the ones who stopped to inquire about the birds in the mall, the ones who wrote into the council, who called into the radio, or shared our facebook posts to help spread awareness about the Tree Martins. Without you, the birds would never have had a voice loud enough to receive the support from the council they desperately needed.

A heartfelt thank you to CHEP, the Helping Hand Program, and Tracy for nominating SA Native Animal Rescue Inc. Your generosity is truly making a difference! The funding we receive will go directly toward providing essential food supplies, ensuring that our
rescued wildlife receives proper nutrition and care.
This support allows us to continue our mission of protecting and rehabilitating native animals, giving them the best chance to thrive in their natural habitat. With the right nourishment, we can provide comfort, strength, and healing to countless creatures in need.
We are incredibly grateful for this kindness—it strengthens our work, our passion, and our commitment to preserving Australia’s unique wildlife. Thank you for being part of this
journey with us!
